(In the Gazette of this date in 1878, there is a very fine picture of the Horticultural Pavilion. We copy the following description—Ed.)
Above is a view of the Horticultural Pavilion, now being erected by the Southern California Horticultural Society on Temple street, Los Angeles, only 1500 feet from the junction of Main and Spring streets, which is considered the center of business.
The Pavillion lot has a frontage of two hundred feet on Temple street and extends back to Sand street, a depth of three hundred and forty feet. The above cut represents the Temple street front. The Sand street front is reached by easy grade with no stairs. The Pavillion consists of a main hall, two stories high, with a frontage of 76 feet by a depth of 132 feet, with an annex of 39x60 feet in the rear, to be devoted to the purposes of a stage and annexes in each side 50x50 feet, two stories in height, one to be devoted to the purposes of a machinery hall, and the other to an art gallery In the angles in front of these annexes one story apartments will be employed respectively for fine arts and floral halls.
The auditorium in the main hall will be 112 by 76 feet, and, with the extensive galleries, will have a seating capacity of 4000. The Pavillion complete presents a frontage 176 feet by a depth of 161. The main central hall is now being built and the wings will be added as soon as the finances of the Society will permit. The directors intend to build only so far as they can pay, and are firmly resolved to incur no indebtedness. J. de Barth Shorle is president of the Society and L. M. Holt secretary.
Mr. Wartenborg informs us that the river bed crossing on Anaheim and Silverado stage road, has been covered with straw and is now as easy a piece of road as the traveler could wish for.
Persons in Los Angles or elsewhere who desire to send letters to Silverado should write on the envelope "via Anaheim." The mail is sent from Anaheim per stage every morning and reaches Silverado in a few hours.
The photographic parlors are now an art gallery in miniature. Some very fine portraits of our citizens adorn the walls. Among those we noticed the other day were large pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Rob't W. Scott, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Beebe, Mr. John Fischer, Mr. Frank Ey, Mr. Ed Dunham, Mr. Theo Rimpau, Mr. Adolph Rimpau, Miss Langenberger, Mrs. Leonard and others whom we cannot now recollect.
