Special Class at Broadway School
Aids Children with Poor Eyesight
A special class at the Broadway school in Anaheim is designed to meet the needs of children, kindergarten through fourth grade, who have poor vision but who, with special instruction and equipment can keep up to grade in their studies.
Basis for referral is 20-70 vision in the better eye after correction, a progressive eye condition, or referral by an eye specialist.
Special equipment includes an ideally lighted classroom with non-reflecting surfaces, light colored desks that tilt for better seeing, as well as tilting ebook racks for library use. The sight saving dictionary has huge print plus a magnifying glass. Test books follow regular classroom work but have large print. The children use large pencils and write their work in big letters to further prevent eye strain. Letters on the black board are also enlarged.
Since it takes twice as much eye energy to write as it does to read, children are taught to type in the 3rd grade or 4th grade. The typewriter has plain large type. These children are also given training in listening so that they will not have to read as much. Some of them have difficulty with space relationship, others are timid in running. All of these problems are met by a specially trained teacher.
Because no child should be isolated from his peers, part of each day is spent in a regular classroom. Here the child can participate in music, social studies and other activities that do not require close work.
Children attend this class from all over Orange county. Inquiries regarding placement should be made at the Anaheim school district or the Orange County Superintendent of Schools.
A class for blind children is in the planning stage. Parents with blind children should contact the Orange County Superintendent of Schools office so that their child may be included.

America's First Sports Car Reaches Market
One of the most widely discussed automobiles—the Chevrolet Corvette—has been placed in distribution. A two-passenger open model (with removable top), the car is the American auto industry's first sports car and the first to carry a plastic body built by mass production methods.
The Corvette measures only 35 inches high at the door. Wheelbase is 102 inches. Traditional Chevrolet features include a special 150-horsepower "Blue-Flame" engine and a Powerglide automatic transmission. Production followed special showings of an experimental model in many cities.
