While telephone lines are still being strung aerially between familiar poles, a great deal of current construction includes the placement of wires in cable through tile ducts of conduit several feet underground. You may have noticed workm and equipment busily digging the parkway strip down the block in your neighborhood. And you first reaction might be something like: "Oh, my lawn . . . it'll ruined!" The lawn, however, will be fully taken up in squares and placed where they can be kept good condition. It stands the extreme pressures that develop in spiral bevel and hypoid gears. A special compound in the lubricant reacts chemically to form a lubricating, wear-resisting coating on the gear teeth. RPM Multi-Service Gear Lubricant stands up in high operating temperatures and is oxidation resistant. It contains an anti-foaming agent that helps control expansion and prevent leakage. Goes Underground to provide New Telephone Services will be put in place, cables pulled through, and the dirt tamped in. And then the sod squares will be put neatly back in their beds. Similar care is afforded shrubs and small trees. These projects are done by outside contractors, with the work inspected by telephone company and city supervisors. Every effort is made to plan and carry out operations with the least possible inconvenience to property, owners and the public. Before placing any underground telephone conduit, a permit must be obtained, whether it is state highway, city property, or private property. All such work is subject to inspection by the Department of Public Works, or other authorities. And any repaving on telephone projects is arranged for by the company. Planning keeps traffic open during the work period. Walkways for pedestrian use are provided when necessary. Driveways and walks are bridged or tunneled to keep them usable. Barricades and lights are maintained in excess of the legal requirements. Youngsters are attracted to an open manhole, a sand pile, or a stacked pile of conduit, all of which offer a wonderful field of play. Knowing this, the telephone inspector and the contractor's foreman spare no effort or expense to see that everything possible is done to protect the children from injury. That accounts for the manhole excavations you may see covered with plywood. The covering keeps that wayward baseball from rolling in, with the venturesome child behind it. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub.
