8 Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1953 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Meet a man with 15 mouths to feed Frank S. Corda farms 240 acres in California’s Salin Valley. We know Mr. Corda well because Standard Oil Company of California fuels the power that tills his land. By replacing muscles with machines as Mr. Corda has done, the average U.S. farm produces enough food for 15 people. One hundred years ago a good farmer produced enough to feed only five people. Mechanized farming, powered by oil, has made the difference. Insect "bomber" demonstrates one of the ways petroleum helps make farms more productive and profitable. Airborne insecticides made by Standard's subsidiary, California Spray-Chemical Corporation, are so effective that they save western farmers millions of dollars a year in crop losses. Other petroleum products save time and labor...for example, a tractor can work 10 acres in the time a team of horses takes to plow two. We also had a hand in that, because Standard developed the first compounded lubricating oil that made high-speed diesels for tractors practical. Fuels and lubricants for farm machines, yield-boosting weed killers, roof coatings for barns, stains, detergents to keep milk equipment less, bottled gas for refrigeration, cooking heating—they're all on the long list of it is supplied to western farms by Standard...you, too, benefit from each new way Standard scientists increase the yield of farms...cause you may be one of the 15 people Corda feeds. Questions or comments about Company are always welcome. Write: Stand Oil Company of California, P.O. Box 349 San Francisco, California. SOUTHERN COUNTIES GAS COMPANY Live better, spend less with GAS More on... Oblong Views (Continued from Page 1) live near by. Those engineers should be morticians. They're too happy. So much for railroads and back to Anaheim. It was pretty obvious that the townspeople were going to starve to death unless they found a new and lucrative manner of survival. A local character was hanging around the local pool halls and as soon as he heard about the bum deal that Anaheim was getting he immediately chaulked up his que, slipped the eight ball in the side pocket and without further explanation to his cronies, sent back to Spain for a sample orange tree. I don't have to tell you that the tree came from Valencia, Spain, and it took a lot of fooling around to finally bring into the world the motley bunch of culls that we are always seeing being hauled hither and from. The old Colonists were happy as all get out and yanked walnut trees like an old Army dentist pulls teeth. The original orange tree is still in my back yard. At least the oranges taste like it. They taste like a cross between lemons, alum and Oklahoma grapefruit. They are as hard as prune seeds and almost the same in color. The tree won't die and if you think it is tough you will be pleased to note that there isn't a square foot of crab grass within 15 yards of it. Like a mother-in-law, its too hard to die and too stubborn to be useful. So much for that and back to Anaheim. History says that Anaheim almost became the county seat of cattle feed and juice. That puts the dust of a new-born Anaheim almost right back where Ion you will remember it started. In the liquor business. Perhaps, as you drive through today and don't forget... History says that Anaheim almost became the county seat of Orange county. Yesiree. That was a hot battle. It was nip and tuck between Anaheim and Orange and while the fight raged between the two villages, Santa Ana (the stinkers) sneaked in and, copped the whole deal. I guess Santa Ana has been sorry ever since because the court house now stands where they should have a city parking lot. About this time Anaheim was blessed with the arrival of about five thousand real estate people and most of them or their children are still here, starving along with the rest of the community. The orange groves are slowly vanishing and everyone has made a pot-ful of money that ever had anything to do with them. Many great and wonderful by-products have come from oranges such as HILGENFELD MORTUARY Faithful Courteous Service 120 E.
