Book on Pacific Coast Fishing is Handy Authority on the Subject
Pacific coast salt water anglers—experts and novices alike—have waited years for a really authoritative, easy-to-use handbook for the unique conditions of their sport. How to Fish the Pacific
Trees and Shrubs Have Longer Planting Season
Trees and shrubs and other perennial nursery stock, by contrast with seeds, can be transplanted on your own properly, during any month of the year, according to the American Association of Nurserymen. The only exception is the middle of the winter in areas of the country where the ground freezes solidly and there is too much snow to make transplanting practical without undue labor. The wintertime even is a good time to plant, if the ground isn't too frozen to dig a hole for the plant.
In recent years improved handling of nursery stock has spread the planting season to 12 months of the year over most areas of the country. Local nurseries can even deliver trees and shrubs in full leaf and have them continue to thrive. The only plant materials that are not moved throughout the year are those which are shipped with bare roots, but if the same material is transferred with a good ball of wire or cable, it will work well.
Coast, by Raymond Cannon, published today by Lane Publishing Co., is a book that eminently justifies their walt!
It gives complete, detailed information on how to find, how to catch, and how to identify positively the 207 game fish that range Pacific coast waters from Vancouver, B.C., to San Quentin bay in Baja, Calif.
Every popular method of fishing along the Pacific coast is spelled out with careful attention to accuracy, including techniques for party, charter boats, and small craft; pier and deck, surf, breakwater and rock fishing.
Tackle, Techniques Explained
Lures and baits are discussed in detail; tested ways of presenting them to skeptical fish are revealed. Techniques backed up by the experience of scores of the coast's top fishermen are fully explained. The angler gets excellent information on hooking, playing, and landing under various conditions.
Practically every angler is occasionally mystified by a strange finny monster that takes his lure. How to Fish Pacific Coast identifies every major game fish in these waters—and tells how to find and catch a host of other fine food and game fish that most sportsmen do not know exist. Each fish is pictured in a clear line drawing made from life. Arrows point to features that make identification quick and positive. Here is a book that shows how to fish the Pacific coast.

Local nurseries can even deliver trees and shrubs in full leaf and have them continue to thrive. The only plant materials that are not moved throughout the year are those which are shipped with bare roots, but if the same material is transferred with a good ball of earth, or in a container, it will have the same chance to thrive as in the early spring.
So if you have any late planting of nursery stock to do on your property, do not hesitate to order it because of the season of the year. Talk it over with your local nurseryman and you'll find that he will give the same guarantee for the success of the planting as in the so-called "planting season." Should you have put off your planting therefore just go ahead with it at any time and you'll be that much further along than by waiting until the following year. Then when next spring rolls around your planting will become firmly established, and your plants will be that much further advanced.
Buena Parker Ends Field Training
WITH THE 24th INFANTRY DIV. IN JAPAN—PFC Raymond E. White, whose wife, Jennie, lives on route 1, 4811 Grace st., Buena Park, Calif., recently completed an intensive spring field training program with 'the 24th infantry division in Japan.
White, a member of Company D of the 19th infantry regiment, received basic training at Fort Ord, Calif., and arrived overseas in January 1953.
He was employed by McNauls company, Bakersfield, Calif., before entering the army.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otis L. White, lives in Planada, Calif.
Now receiving intensive field training, the 24th infantry division is part of the security forces for the Japanese islands. The 24th fought in Korea for 19 months before being relieved in early 1952.
Practically every angler is occasionally mystified by a strange finny monster that takes his lure. Each fish is pictured in a clear line drawing made from life. Arrows point to features that make identification quick and positive. Here is a book that—truly—opens new fields of sport and the thousands of anglers who go down to the sea along the Pacific coast for their recreation.
Designed to Use While Fishing
The publishers—who also publish Sunset magazine—have given careful attention to the design of the book to make it a working tool for the angler. It has a tough, washable, water resistant cover, and it is designed to fit all the standard tackle boxes. It also has marginal indexing that allows the fisherman to turn quickly to any information he may need.
After 25 years of fishing every nook and cranny of the Pacific coast, Raymond Cannon one day caught a fish he could not identify. Then and there he decided to write a book that would tell western fishermen how to find, catch, and identify every fish along the Pacific coast.
There followed six years dedicated effort and travel up and down the Pacific coast to produce How to Fish the Pacific Coast. A host of expert anglers, sport fishing boat crews, and marine biologists were enlisted to test and check hundreds of ideas, pieces of information and techniques. Individual projects took up to three years of constant work and field research by the teams assigned to them. The book's 338 pages and 240 illustrations have been checked by both scientists and top western ichthyologists.
The magnitude of Cannon's undertaking—and accomplishments—is easily understood by leafing through the pages of How to Fish the Pacific Coast. His book is sure to enrich the lives of thousands of other anglers. It is on sale today at book, sporting goods, and hardware stores, nurseries, and balt shops.
Introducing a new era in road motive power. Union Park has developed and made successful early tests of the world's propane gas-operated turbine-tric locomotive.
In relation to its length, new breed of iron horse proved itself the most powerful of any type, according to D.S. Neuhart, Union Pacific's general superintendent of motive power and machinery.
A single unit weighing no 276 tons, it delivers upward 4800 horsepower—more than produced by three Diesel engines operating together. Neuhart ed. In tests during the past winthe gas turbine has handled a car train of 4650 tons.
The application of propane in the gas turbine is the result joint research by Union Park Richfield Oil Corp., and Gerne Electric.
It is planned to place this similar locomotives in regular freight service between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City. Present turbine is geared for a top rate of 65 miles per hour, but railroad officials reckon this type of power plant as able for high-speed passenger trains.

UNION PACIFIC INTRODUCES NEW BREED OF "IRON HORSE"
Only locomotive of its kind in the world, a propane gas-operated turbine-electric here poses for its first picture after successful tests at Los Angeles. Trailing the 551,720-pound monster is the special tank car carrying the fuel. Most powerful of any type of engine per foot of length, this and other Union Pacific gas turbines will operate between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City.
New Union Pacific Propane Turbine-Electric Locomotive Introduces New Railroading Era
Introducing a new era in rail-motive power, Union Pacific developed and made successively tests of the world's first anne gas-operated turbine-elec-locomotive.
The relation to its length, the breed of iron horse has led itself the most powerful any type, according to David euhart, Union Pacific's son.
Tenance economy are the factors that led us into this project," said Neuhart.
"We don't yet know all about operating costs under various conditions. But we do know the gas turbine is very flexible in handling trains, and it will start and pull a heavier load. Also, because propane burns clean and leaves on a single shaft for ease of minute of completely burned, smogless exhaust gases are discharged through a port in the roof at a velocity of approximately 150 miles per hour. Some railroaders call the locomotive "Chi-nook," which means "warm wind," and others term it "The Big Wind!" Its exhaust noise is considerable at close range but is dissinated sharply with distance.
Future California Excellent, Bank
It is accepted by the county large that California has had tonishing population gain what are all these people are they finding gainful environment, and what kind is it?
To provide answers to questions the economics of the Bank of America just completed a study of growth in employment in California over a 13-year period April 1940 to April 1953.
This study shows that 1940, while population was 71 per cent from 6,900,000,800,000 California employees rose 68 per cent, from 2,500 to 4,777,000.
At the same time the choice of that employment was ing. Although farm emploi rose, relatively it became an important source of jobs, only 43 per cent in the Non - agricultural employ however, rose 103 per cent.
Propane is the lightest fuel of petroleum, explained C French, Richfield research neer. As a gas, most of it out of oil wells, where it in the vapor spaces above soil. Some propane is obl during oil refining.
Highly volatile, propane is octane rating of 125. But

The application of propane to gas turbine is the result of research by Union Pacific, Field Oil Corp., and General Electric.
It is planned to place this and other locomotives in regular light service between Los An- and Salt Lake City. The cent turbine is geared down at a top rate of 65 miles per hour, but railroad officials regard type of power plant as suit-for high-speed passenger operating efficiency and maintenance economy are the factors that led us into this project," said Neuhart.
"We don't yet know all about operating costs under various conditions. But we do know the gas turbine is very flexible in handling trains, and it will start and pull a heavier load. Also, because propane burns clean and leaves on a single shaft, forces a torbine blades, we expect much less maintenance cost and time lost in overhauls. Stationary engines of this type have operated as much as 30,000 hours without repairs."
Compared with a Diesel engine, with its scores of moving parts, the gas turbine is basically a simple machine. A compressor, resembling a set of 15 windmills on a single shaft, forces a torrent of air into six combustion chambers where it is mixed and burned with the propane fuel, which also is forced in under high pressure. The resulting blast strikes the curved blades of the turbine, whirling it at a rate of some 6900 r.p.m.
Through reduction gears, the turbine shaft drives four generators which power eight traction motors on the axles between the 16 wheels.
Minute of completely burned, smogless exhaust gases are discharged through a port in the roof at a velocity of approximately 150 miles per hour. Some railroaders call the locomotive "Chi-nook," which means "warm wind," and others term it "The Big Wind!" Its exhaust noise is considerable at close range but is dissipated sharply with distance because the sound has no dominant pitch.
An odd feature of the turbine, it was pointed out, is that it is the only engine that likes cold weather. This is because cold air is denser, and the compressor thus can force more air into the combustion chambers.
The propane fuel supply is carried in a special tender—a tank car with superstructure enclosing an intricate system of valves and controls. The outer shell covers a four-inch layer of cork, within which is the actual con-

Future California Job Prospects
Excellent, Bank Survey Indicates
It is accepted by the country at large that California has had assembling population gains, but that are all these people doing? Are they finding gainful employment, and what kind is it?
To provide answers to such questions the economics department of the Bank of America has completed a study of the growth in employment in California over a 13-year period from April 1940 to April 1953.
This study shows that since 1940, while population was rising per cent from 6,900,000 to 11,000,000 California employment se 68 per cent, from 2,574,000 to 4,777,000.
At the same time the character that employment was changing. Although farm employment is relatively it became a less important source of jobs, rising by 43 per cent in the period on agricultural employment, however, rose 103 per cent, and in this grouping manufacturing of both a defense and a non-defense nature has provided the greatest number of jobs. In addition, major growth in construction and government jobs contributed, to the change.
The study shows that the California employment structure has tended toward similarity to the national pattern. It also discloses that the increase in trade, finance and service categories has kept pace with population growth and in transportation, communication and utilities at an even faster rate. Mining, because of reduced operations in gold, declined below the 1940 employment figure.
As to the future, the Bank of America economists say the California outlook continues good. "If California maintains its agricultural leadership and continues to strengthen its positions as the industrial center of a constantly expanding market, more and more new jobs will be available to the many Californians yet to be."
