Community Functions Find Home in Local Elks Club
BY JOAN 8. WHITE
Northern Orange county is well represented on the membership list of the Anaheim Elks club. Membership totals 1400, according to figures released by Warren Ashleigh, secretary-manager of the local lodge. In deference to the increased membership as well as increased public use of facilities offered by the handsome club house at 423 North Los Angeles st., additional off-the-street parking lots have been added to accommodate 100 cars.
Semil-Civic
Among similar clubs of this kind, the Anaheim Elks club is unique in that since its inception in 7922 it has been a semi-public building instead of exclusive to the use of its members. Now a well established center of community life, the building's extensive facilities are widely used by club groups throughout the county, some of whom have maintained standing reservations for several years.
The ladies' lounge which shares the first floor with offices, lodge, spacious lobby and private club rooms, is beautifully appointed and is a favorite meeting place for various women's groups. The lounge can accommodate about 85 persons.
The lodge room on this same floor can be made available to the public when a meeting place for 400-500 is needed. This room into the lodge.
The top elective office in the Anaheim Elks club is now held by John Shea, exalted ruler, who will hold office until next April. The highest post in Elkdom, that of national grand exalted ruler has been held by L. A. Fay Lewis, now a member of the local lodge.

The lodge room on this same floor can be made available to the public when a meeting place for 400-500 is needed. This room is tastefully decorated and is equipped with a Hammond organ. It is here that club members hold official meetings on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
Staff of 15
Appointed manager by the trustees and elected secretary by popular vote of club members, Warren Ashleigh serves in a supervisory capacity with a staff of 15 employees who carry on the various phases of club work from 8 a.m. until midnight daily.
Ashleigh is justifiably proud of the food service presided over by Chef Larry Huff. Not only does Huff prepare meals for the 15 club members who make their home at the club, but from his large and well equipped kitchen can and does serve as many as 700 people banquet style in the ballroom. Smaller groups are served in the service clubroom with or without access to the adjoining taproom. A popular meeting place for groups such as Kiwans, Rotary and Altrusa, the service clubroom comfortably accommodates 140.
When not in use for banquets, the ballroom is the scene of many brilliant social affairs throughout the year. It has an excellent dance floor, and a good size stage and a grand piano.
Patriotic and Charitable
No secret organization, the fraternal order of Elks is a patriotic organization as well as a service club. The American flag takes a prominent part in all ceremonies. A prospective member must declare himself against communism before being taken

Valencia Orange Market Rising; Navels Fall Off
Average prices on late season California navel oranges declined during the week ending May 30, while those of the on-coming California valencia orange crop continued to strengthen on the medium to large sizes. The over-all average on all oranges was off about 20c, holding at around the level of $3.00 a box f.o.b. Total sales for the week were about the same as those of the previous week, slightly over 1100 cars.
Wholesalers and retailers still expressed good interest in top quality, firm condition navel oranges but off-quality, poor fruit being sharply discounted. For the most part, the trade was switching over to California valencias and demand for that variety was steadily increasing.
Demand for California lemons was steady during most of the week but an easier trend developed with continued cool weather over most of the nation. Sales increased more than 60 cars over those of last week as the trade built up inventories in anticipation of warmer weather and the f.o.b. average, while slightly lower, was generally holding at about $6.25 a box.
Prorate for the week ending June 6 was set at 600 cars by the Lemon Administrative Committee, the same as this week.

Student from Japan Compares US Schools with Those of Her Country
Nineteen-year-old Sumiko Arai of Japan, one of two teenaged foreign students now attending Fullertan Union High School (the other is Werner Ogris of Austria, whose homeland is almost on the opposite side of the earth from Japan) came to the United States from Osaka on a three-year passport to study. While taking home economics subjects, Sumiko of Japan is learning how to prepare Mexican tacos, French Fries, and Danish pastries in American ovens!
Since enrollment at FUHS last fall, she has written home frequently of the differences between Japanese and American schools. There, she says, high school classes average 60 to 75 students and instructors use the lecture method in teaching.
Generally students remain in one room throughout the day, with the instructors rotating from room to room, just the oppsite system from FUHS.
Although greatly impressed with our "wonderful equipment" and writing to her relatives in Osaka that school here is "just like a dream," Sumiko—like any teenager so far from home—does confess homesickness at times. She lives in Fullerton with Mrs. George Sugito on Maple Avenue, the daughter of her American sponsor.
Interviewed recently by the journalism class, Sumiko told of the 37 high schools in Osaka, second largest city in Japan, with 3½ million people. English is considered the second most important language there, she said, next to native Japanese.
Sumiko has taken English in Japanese schools for three years and speaks remarkably well although she modestly says very little.

FJC Student to Tour Europe for Study of Roses
Cross pollinization of roses will take John van Barneveld, Fullerton Junior College student, to Europe for a 14-month jaunt beginning June 16.
Van Barneveld's father is in the wholesale rose business in Puente and John's study of pollinization in European countries famous for roses will be a practical aid.
In Europe, however, John will also pursue his education, studying languages of countries he visits and attending sessions at the University of Madrid in Spain; the Sorbonne in Paris; and the University of Nice.
On his itinerary are England, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Austria. The tour will begin when he lands at Southhampton, England. He will visit Algeria and Tunisia on his return trip to the United States.
