Kwikset Sets Employee Relations Model (EDITOR'S NOTE — As Northern Orange county becomes more industrialized, the residents of the area are becoming increasingly interested in the highly important management-employee relations of the manufacturing companies. Relations between management and personnel of the various companies could have a decided effect upon the economy of this area, as well as upon the friendly relations between the many groups which support our civic and social organizations. Anaheim is fortunate to have fine business enterprises managed by individuals who realize the importance, dignity, and freedom of the American working man, and woman and include their best interests in the top policies of the companies. Kwikset Locks, Inc. is a keystone industry in Anaheim. The excellence of its management-personnel relations is known and studied throughout many segments of industry. For our Progress Edition, the Gazette made an inquiry into the personnel policies of Kwikset in order to illustrate the firm ground on which Anaheim can stand in the matter of the employee-management relations of its leading economic units. The philosophy behind Kwiksets personnel relations policies is summed up in a statement by Adolf Schope, president, in a message in a company handbook which is given to new employees. The handbook contains, in brief form, all the information an employee wants to know about the company for which he is working. In a foreword, Mr. Schope says: "Kwikset is a comparative newcomer to Anaheim. We arrived here in 1948 and immediately pitched in to make Kwikset a good, progressive, and friendly place to work. We sought to build an organization where men and women could create well-made and trustworthy products which will find useful places in the homes of other men and women throughout the nation and the world. Because our purpose was ever to move ahead and to turn out products which would receive widespread and honest acceptance—and, in turn, would make our jobs useful and secure at Kwikset—we didn't have time or inclination to set up a system of 'bosses and labor'. Many of our higher paid people have gained their experience and attained the ability to assume higher responsibility from 'working on the job' at Kwikset. Consequently, Kwikset has become a working 'team'. We all are Kwiksetters. It is this spirit of cooperation and friendly understanding which has contributed in large measure to the success and good reputation of Kwikset. South St. Formerly located in Paramount, the company has been operating here approximately three months. The company manufactured 1400 units in 1952, with sales totaling over $2,500,000. Owners of the firm are John C. 'scratch' in 1945, we have become one of the world's largest manufacturers of residential locksets. We have produced more than 16,000,000 locksets—or, put another way, 32,000,000 door knobs. "And, additions of new tools, machines, and equipment—with a corresponding increase in jobs—have been in proportion. "When we started production in Anaheim back in 1948, we had 200 employees. In the spring of 1953 we had more than 750 employees and we still are growing. "All this has been accomplished in the face of keen competition." (Editor's note—also in the face of income taxes, both personal and corporate, which have been worked to death. The excess profits tax, which hits industry so hard, provides almost capital punishment for young industries such as Kwikset.)
