California Lemon Juice and Oil Cruets California connoisseurs of the tossed green salad like to pour their own lemon juice and oil from cruets—then add salt, pepper, and maybe a pressed clove of garlic to season their salads. Why not give glamour to your salad course (which is always served first, in California) by putting the lemon juice cruet on the table with your big bowl of chilled greens? In front of your family and guests you add the pure California lemon juice and salad oil, the salt and pepper, and then toss the salad gently. It's fun to serve salad this California way. And, like candles and the chafing dish, cruets on your table give your dinner parties charm and intimacy. Pure California lemon juice comes both canned and frozen, in handy little 8½- and 6-ounce cans. On your grocer's shelves and in his freezer you will find many brands of pure California lemon juice. It's easy to fill a pottery or glass cruet with this already-squeezed lemon juice. Today's engines Anti-Billboard Council Celebrates Defeat of Senate Highway Measures The California Roadside Council, active supporter of billboard-control along California's new freeways, is congratulating its members and friends on the successful opposition to two bills introduced in the State Legislature by Sen. Hugh Burns of Fresno, at the request of the outdoor advertising industry. One of these measures, S. B. 733, was denied a "do pass" last week by the Assembly Committee on Conservation, Planning and Public Works. The other, S. B. 734, is not expected to re-appear, after having been sent back to a Senate Committee. According to John W. Broad, San Francisco attorney and Chairman of the Roadside Council, the pair of bills was designed to block all further enactment of county ordinances curbing billboards along freeways. Several California counties have already protected their new freeways by means of such ordinances. Broad stated today that their example will doubtless be followed by many others, now that this obstructive state legislation has been successfully halted. The action of the Assembly Committee in opposition to S. B. 733 came as a surprise, for predictions around the Capitol, had been that it would almost certainly go through. Roadside Council spokesmen believe that the explanation of the upset lies in the widespread expression of public opinion. "Chief credit goes to the many citizens who wrote or wired their Assemblymen, urging defeat of this bill," John Broad stated, following the hearing. "We are very grateful to the Committee for its full and fair hearing, and especially to those Committee members who voted against the bill," he announced. "We also feel sure that the expression of public opinion was an important factor in the Committee's decision." Committee members voting against S. B. 733 were: Allen Davis, Hansen, Lowrey, Luckel and Waters. The Boys' Town will be a memorial to men of the 5th Regimental Combat Team killed in the Korean fighting. The soldiers voted to turn the money over to the Seoul YMCA, which will operate the project. The Combat Team's effort is being boosted by $3,700 from the Third Army, stationed at Fort McPherson, Georgia. This was ralesd in a Thanksgiving Day collection last November and sent to Korea to meet "the greatest need of the moment." This information was received here today by Tommy Thomason, general secretary of the Anaheim YMCA, in a message from his organization's headquarters in New York. "This Boys' Town in Korea has been planned as a combined farm and industrial school for boys," Thomason said. "Thirty-five boys have already been placed in an encampment on the island site. Enrollment will be 120 by June, and 200 in November." The project, he added, is expected to be self-supporting within eighteen months. This year's tour offers a wide range of homes from the Edward Mittleman home, decorated as a background for their outstanding collection of Western art originals, to the Roy Stuhley's "boy-proof" home with its large lana and terra cotta patio. A complete list of homes to be shown includes: the Howard Mitelman home, 1400 Sunny Crest drive; Roy Stunley home, 11812 Las Palmas; Dr. Samuel Gendel, 11711 Altura drive; Bud Dawson home, 1537 Avalencia; Mrs. Dorothy Proud, 1437 Richman Knoll; Sam Gilbert, 1088 North Grand View; Cecil Crew, 1108 La Mesa; Dr. Donald Bauman, 1306 Ridge View Terrace; Clinton Halth, 1008 Nufwood; William D. Enrollment will be 120 by June, and 200 in November.” The project, he added, is expected to be self-supporting within eighteen months. “The Han River Boys’ Town, Thomason continued, ‘is to consist of sixteen small buildings on a sizeable farm. Twelve of the buildings will be dormitories. Three will be shops and one administration building. All boys in the settlement will be under eighteen years old. The buildings are now being erected with materials supplied by the United Nations Korean Relief Administration. The 5th Regimental Combat Team is a regular Army unit which was stationed at Scherfield Barracks, Honolulu, T. H.; before the Communist invasion of South Korea in June, 1950, Thomason said. It was rushed to Pusan in the early days of the fighting, and attached to the 24th Infantry Division. The Team helped to defend the Russian beach-head, and then fought its way north through the capture of the North Korean capital, and back to the present stalemated battle line. Its casualties have been heavy. Plans to establish a living memorial to the Combat Team’s dead, Thomason explained, were formulated late in 1952 by an enlisted men’s committee, with the co-operation of Col. Lee L. Clifford, then commanding officer, and have been developed with the continuing co-operation of Col. Harvey H. Fischer, who succeeded him. “From the outset, the soldiers decided that Korean orphans were... Year! $400 ONLY... 9.95 To Buy! THE zer not afford...a CO of food! ANCES INC. This spring, he and a committee from the 5th Regimental Combat Team participated in a ceremony at Seoul, with a group of Korean children, to inaugurate the new Boys' Town." A bronze plaque, to be placed at the Boys' Town, now is being made in Japan. It will read: "In Memoriam—To the Devoted Men of the 5th Regimental Combat Team Who Gave Their Lives for the Cause of Liberty and Freedom Everywhere." The YMCA in Korea was organized in 1902 with help of the United States and Canadian YM- CA'S, which jointly conduct the movement's World Service program of overseas aid. Through its participation in World Service activities, the YMCA has been helping to support the work of the Y in Korea, Thomason pointed out.
