It all began on May 10, 1869, with the driving of the Gold Spike, which literally bound the United States together with enduring steel. The Central Pacific (now Southern Pacific) had joined with Union Pacific to speed westward the course of empire in America. We are indeed proud to have been part of that exciting history.

Bringing settlers, tourists
Beginning early in that pioneer period, we stimulated population by advertising, by sending lecturers throughout the U.S. and Europe, by special colonist trains and very low "homeseekers' fares." Today the population of our eight S.P. states (see map) is more than 25,000,000 and is increasing three times as fast as that of the rest of the U.S.
We pioneered in advertising the tourist attractions of the Golden Empire, too, aiding communities and areas in luring visitors. Today the tourist industry usually ranks third to fifth in importance in Golden Empire states. Visitors stream to our National Parks, exciting cities, mountains, seashore and deserts.
Reaching new resources, farmlands
Tremendous and diversified resources have been developed in our territory, aided by the effective transportation service we provide.
The Golden Empire produces 38% of all U.S. lumber...71% of the petroleum...86% of the copper...56% of the gold...100% of the crude sulphur...32% of the fisheries...42% of the silver...44% of all minerals...24% of the salt...63% of the natural gas...27% of the lead. And, continually, since 1869, new and more diversified farm acreages have developed along S.P. lines. Today the Golden Empire produces on its 318 million farm acres 53% of all U.S. cotton...29% of the sugar beets...77% of the melons...77% of the rice...87% of the lettuce...44% of the citrus fruit...81% of the nuts...93% of the grapes.
Paying our way
The great bulk of the System revenue Golden Empire provides The $341,000,000 to S.P. men and women our territory. In less than $85,000,000 and Federal government We pay our water any public subsidy Our continuing pace with our Golding with it, and fine transportation and progress.
McMahan’s Opens Buena Park Used Furniture Store
Manchester, at 6185, has been selected as the site for something really unusual—a used department for the many McMahan furniture store serving this area. An outlet for trade-ins, freight damaged and floor sample merchandise has long been sought after by McMahan's.
“Buena Park was selected,” announced Robert Payne, district supervisor, “because of its centralized location and because of the expected rapid expansion of Buena Park.”
Jim Dicus of Anaheim will be manager of the new store. “We will have most all of the used furniture from the McMahan stores in this area right here in Buena Park.” Mr. Discus said he expects to have a complete line of unfinished furniture and in addition to that during the summer months carry a large selection of outdoor furniture.

Oratory. Contest
Winner of the 1953 Optimist international boys' oratorical contest, held Thursday evening, April 23, was Ted Deming, Fullerton union high school student from La Habra, who took first place for presentation, of the subject, "Optimism—the faith that leads to achievement."
A sophomore at FUHS, Deming will represent the local club in a run-off contest for all Orange county entrants to be held Monday evening, April 27 at Ted and Zella's club center, Fullerton.
Next step in the elimination schedule will be to compete with other high school students at San Clemente, for Southern California championship, then go to Phoenix for the international finals.

Locating new industries
For 84 years we've sung the praises of our Golden Empire for industrial purposes, inviting Eastern industries to locate along our lines, where abundant resources, agriculture, efficient manpower and benign climate favor them.
And how they've come! For the past 26 years more than one new industry per day, requiring spur track facilities, has located on S.P. Lines—and now the average is two a day.
Paying our way
The great bulk of our S.P. Transportation System revenues goes back into Golden Empire prosperity.
The $341,000,000 we paid in wages to S.P. men and women last year helps our territory. In 1952 we paid more than $85,000,000 in taxes to local, state and Federal governments.
We pay our way, operating without any public subsidy.
Our continuing purpose is to keep pace with our Golden Empire, expanding with it, and helping to provide the fine transportation it needs to develop and progress.

Bob Heinz to Open New Used Car Lot at 1215 N. Palm Tomorrow
An old member of the local automotive fraternity is opening a new used car lot at 1215 N. Palm st., tomorrow and Saturday.
Bob Heinz, formerly sales manager for Casey-Beckman Pontiac and before then, Bevins Pontiac agency, is sole owner of the new enterprise. He will be assisted by Clyde Carter, former Western-Gamble store manager here, as saleman, and his wife, Katharine, as office manager.
The opening days will feature an introductory offer of 100 gallons of gasoline free to each of the first 10 buys of post-war cars.
Bob and Katharine Heinz live at 852 S. Helena st. with their four children, Katharine, 10, Jeanne, 6, Bob, Jr., 6, and Dick, 4. Heinz is president of Anaheim junior chamber of commerce and an active member of Anaheim Elks club. He and his family are members of St. Boniface Catholic church.
In World war II, Heinz served as a test pilot in the air force's training command and as a pilot in the ferry command. He now holds captain's rank in the air force reserve.
Settling in his new business location is much like coming home to Heinz, since he spent the first 21 years of his life in a house just 600 feet north of the location of the Heinz Motor Co. lot.
There are about 1,000 Moslems in Washington, D.C.
