OBLONG VIEWS (From an Egg-shaped Head) BY WALDO HUNTER This week, this poor, battered column will acknowledge some correspondence. The first is from Miss Lena V. Rowe, 208 S. Chaudina street, who says (in part): "May I, as a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Anaheim, thank you for the open letter to the Rev. Mr. Congdon which you published in your column in the Gazette of April 9. "I'd like to go through your entire letter selecting the true, the kind, and gracious things you said concerning Mr. Congdon and his services..." "Friends from Illinois, Florida, and large cities of California have visited our church and without exception they received such an inspiration and uplift as you have, that they are still wishing they might attend our services regularly. Thank you most kindly for your appreciation and understanding of the services rendered by our beloved pastor in our beloved church. As a former teacher of English and journalism in a large high school in Aurora, Illinois, I feel that I am equipped to speak with authority..." Thank you, Miss Rowe, for your thoughtful and gracious letter. As for my column on the pastor, I would not wash out a word of it, or cancel half a line. Alan LaMont, 130 N. Lemon, also corresponds as follows, and in part: "Re: your column on UNESCO in last week's Gazette: 29TH the BIG the FILM It's OU Sale Starts Tomorrow SAVE..SAVE..SAVE... Tomorrow is "A.S" Day! Plan to be here early and get yourials in every department! Thank you, Miss Rowe, for your thoughtful and gracious letter. As for my column on the pastor, I would not wash out a word of it, or cancel half a line. Alan LaMont, 130 N. Lemon, also corresponds as follows, and in part: "Re: your column on UNESCO in last week's Gazette: "I am of the old reactionary group of Americans who think this country is still a pretty good place to live in, in spite of all the outside interference. "At one time when Russia was an ally in very good standing with our government, their ambassador De Stolcke had nothing but praise for the American people even with their blunderings, military chaos and political haneuverings. "One of his quotes went something like this: '...this extraordinary American people. Nothing is too difficult for them; if they lack leadership they get along without it...the characteristic of this nation is its confidence in itself, in its destiny, and in its belief that ours 'the best government that God ever saw' will last forever.' "This same self-confidence which USED to be our chief American characteristic, is today in danger of being undermined. Too many people keep telling us how 'dependent' we are on the U.N., our Allies, etc. Those who talk this way render a poor service. To be sure we need Allies and must respect them, but our old time American self-confidence is the most powerful Ally of all. "In future when discussing policies fabricated in a meeting of world minds remember one very important point, America was built into the great power that it is today by self-confident, blundering, politically minded men who had only one thought...ours 'the best government that God ever saw will last Forever.' "P.S. The period that De Stolcke was Ambassador to America was during the Civil War, namely 1863. Even then our problems were much the same as today." Thank you, Mr. LaMont, for your letter. But for the record, let it be remembered that I did not, in the column under discussion, necessarily defend UNESCO or UN. I spoke out against an incipient trend toward thought-control in this country which may customers have waited for! "P.S. I spoke out against an incipient trend toward thought-control in this country which may one day make it unsafe for us even to say in public that we don't—or do—like the actions of our township supervisor. And when a man can't sit with his feet propped up on the old pot-bellied stove, spit tobacco juice on his bluchers and cuss the administration, then we have lost it, brother; it is gone. The United Nations, spawn of some of the world's most brilliant minds, is a collective effort among the family of nations to prevent wars of global status. It has been in effect scarcely eight years. Such an unprecedented program might take 25, 50, or 100 years to accomplish its aim. Should we not use some charity now, in its embryonic stage, when we pass judgment on its errors? But enough of this. I have stepped beyond the bounds of the status quo, and have been castigated and pilloried for such brashness. From now on this column will stay strictly on non-controversial paths. For instance, next week the subject will be: "Nesting Techniques of the Southern Maryland Tufted Titmouse." (That is a bird). However, in a subsequent column I might again strike out boldly in the face of the inevitable hall of bombast due one who dares touch on things unmentionable and launch into an explanation of why there are more than two of them. (Titmice, that is)."
