The Farmer's Corner
By RALPH H. TAYLOR
(Executive Secretary, Agricultural Council of California)
From 1923 until 1953 America practiced a form of national cannibalism.
Businessmen, industrialist, farmer, butcher, baker, candlestick maker—we all participated directly or indirectly.
During these two decades we bled our nation's treasury of $264 billion, our national debt today. In doing so we devoured America's bone and sinew.
It may be we have done no permanent injury to ourselves. That depends; it depends on the courage and understanding we display during the upcoming period of "readjustment."
It's Here
For it is coming. To the observant, fundamental changes are already in the making. What they mean, in essence, is simply that we are going to be made to rely more on ourselves, individually, and less on the thrift and hard work of our neighbor.
There is no personal guilt to be attached to our past conduct for, in most instances, it was either participate in the orgy or die of economic malnutrition.
But that excuse is no longer valid. Nor has it been for some time past.
Farmers First
Consequently, Eisenhower and his cabinet intend to shake loose from the treasury trough those who have fattened there.
Somebody has got to be first and first up in the farmer.
Which is all right with him if he has the assurance the rest will shortly follow.
Exra Benson, secretary of agriculture and a farmer himself, has called the tune. Recently he gave the dairy farmer a year to find his own solution. That was the beginning.
At a Chicago conference the secretary explained the new (old) philosophy and asked the dairy-men for suggestions.
He barely had the words out of his mouth when 65 recommendations for dealing with industry surpluses plopped on his desk. Along with them came the assurance of the industry it desired to cooperate in developing a long-term program designed to save the taxpayers as much money as possible.
O.K. II
Which is a very fine beginning Farmers, historically, are the most self-reliant people in the world and because they are, perhaps, it is just that they were the first to be pegged.
It is to be expected that other cabinet officials and bureau heads, in turn, will adopt similar attitudes towards that segment of our economy encompassed by their individual departments: interior must turn back to the tax rolls lands which can be profitably used by private industry; our bureaucrats must, by example, be made to realize the need for money. The incessant drive of the unionists for special treatment must cease. And our businessmen must desist from their efforts to strangle competition.
These are but a scattering of things which must be done to allow our body politic full recovery.

Amphibious War Games in Progress Off Coast of Southern California
Starting Monday the navy and marines are engaging in the largest west coast amphibious training exercise since 1948.
Known as "Sea Jump" the war games are taking place off the coast of Southern California. Over 150 ships, plus numerous amphibious landing craft, 230 navy and marine aircraft, 30,000 naval personnel and 24,000 marines participate.
The loading of the amphibious forces commenced April 20 with equipment and supplies loaded at various west coast naval installations.
"Friendly forces" will sail from San Diego April 28 and be under constant attacks by "aggressor forces" while attempting to make a beachhead near Camp Pendleton on May 5. Marines of the Third division will use this exercise as the final step in becoming combat ready. They have spent 15 maneuver-packed months in training.
Rear Admiral Frederic S. Withington, USN, commander amphibious group III, commands the special task force designed to attack aggressor forces supposedly holding the assault phase of the operation. Some of the better known aspects are naval gunfire, aerial support, the work of the "Frogmen," submarine reconnaissance and control of the waves of landing craft in, the ship to shore movement.
"Sea Jump" will use all techniques learned during World War II in the landings of North Africa, Normandy and many of the Pacific atolls. New methods learned in the Korean conflict will be tried out and the use of atomic weapons will be simulated in support of the attack.
Admiral Withington will command his forces from USS Mt McKinley, an amphibious force flagship with extensive communication facilities. Extensive laboratories, shops, offices and working spaces are provided for the complex staff functions necessary to successful operations.
During World war II the Mt. McKinley served as flagship for five amphibious operations, including Leyte gulf, Palau, Lingayen gulf, San Narcisco and Keramareto. She took part in the Japanese surrender and the landing of occupation forces. More recently the Mt. McKinley served as flagship for the atomic bomb tests at Bikini and Eniwetok. She has completed two tours in the Korean area. Commanding officer is Capt. James T. Hardin, USN.
Amphibious group III was recommissioned on the Pacific coast soon after the police action in Korea. The group's first combat action was the landing of the First marine division at Wonsan. Landing at Iwon and the redeployment of the UN forces at Inchon followed.
In March 1952 the group sailed for Korea on their second tour. Numerous training exercises were conducted to train army and marine units in the far east. Prior to returning in February this year amphibious group III directed the now famous "Wonsan Feint," as a combined training operation and "mock invasion" of North Korea.
"Sea Jump" is under the overall command of Vice Admiral H.
eration. Some of the better known aspects are naval gunfire, aerial support, the work of the "Frogmen" submarine reconnaissance and control of the waves of landing craft in, the ship to shore movement.

In to that dream. By the time it might come true!
Nineteen years ago there weren't any. Today there are 1422 units. By year's end there'll be 97 more. Steam is disappearing fast. And more than 250 coaling and watering stations have bit the dust.
Santa Fe folks just don't dally when it comes to building new.
For today the Santa Fe is America's new railroad. And it's going to stay that way by growing newer every day—in every way that can mean new safety, better service, new comfort and dependability for you.
It costs millions of dollars to serve you so. But it doesn't add a penny to the taxes you pay. Santa Fe folks are proud of that, too—proud that the newness of the Santa Fe is a part of American progress that pays its own way.
