Optimists Given Glimpse of Top Lawmakers by Franklin Steinko
Franklin A. Steinko, past president of Optimist International, formerly the official reporter of the powerful United States senate foreign relations committee, addressed a joint meeting of the Optimist and 20-30 club members last night in the Optimist Youth Center building. Speaking on the subject, "Important Men in the News," the guest speaker made intimate observations of those senators responsible for framing our nation's foreign policies through the years 1946-1951. Appointed by Senator Vandenburg to act as the official reporter, it was Steinko's duty to take down all testimony given in committee.
Based upon intimate acquaintance with such famous personalities as Senators Vandenburg, Atherton, Connelly, Tydings, Tobey, Capper, Sparkman, Knowhand, Taft, Ferguson, Langer and Lodge, he gave the clubmen a clear insight into how the senators conduct the business of the nation.
Discussing the recent resolution that so prominently figured in the headlines concerning a resolution condemning Russia for failure to live up to the Yalta agreement, Steinko pointed out that President Eisenhower was reluctant to revoke the entire Yalta pact as it would strategically affect our military troops stationed in several European countries. The bickering attitude of certain Republican senators might have proven extremely embarrassing if it had not been for the fortunate death of Russian leader, Stalin.
"We have an outstanding leader representing this nation at the United Nations," stated Steinko. "When he talks with Communist MYF 'Football Arizona Tour'

MYF ‘Footlighters’ Return Following Arizona Tour Playing ‘Simon’s Wife’
The famed M.Y.F. Footlighters returned to Anaheim today after a triumphant 1300 tour through Arizona with their production of the religious drama, “Simon’s Wife.”
After participation in a communion service tonight, the troup will depart for a Good Day performance at the First Woodist church in El Monte, re-ground home to give their final performance on Easter Sunday at their home church, the Temple Methodist here in Anaheim.
This talented group of teenagers under the direction of the Frank Butterworth has dedicated Easter week to the presentation of a Lenten play for the four years. It has become one of a comprehensive program Christian education at White Plains that has not only albedo quality development of the arts and furthered their understanding of the Bible, but has had height recognition in four states national honor through The Arts Magazine.
The new play with a cast of 10, experienced Footlighters, is the youngest cast of any plays to date. Mary Doughhall plays the lead supported by Belle Wicker, Gary Gray, Casey, Joe Dougherty, Kay Schitt, Jerry Goodchild, Bob Kett, Jack Dierberger and Gray.
Elected because of its Lenten fidelity, this three act play runs one and a half hours each year in Palestine even the years 28 and 30 A.D. The story of the tension which stops between Simon Peter and wife, Leah, when Simon and another Andrew desert a lure fishing business and leave to follow Jesus.
Mary feels sorry for herself for no means of support for self, her nephew, and an allied performance, the group spent Saturday night at the Lighthouse, a desert dude ranch converted into a church retreat 20 miles from Tucson.
The play was presented again on Palm Sunday at the First Methodist church at Tucson across from the picturesque University of Arizona campus. A performance at Tempe followed at a Methodist church adjacent to the Arizona State Teacher’s college. Wednesday found the party in Prescott in the mountains to the north. And today the youngsters traveled the 370 miles from Prescott to be in Anaheim for the Communion Services.
Theatre Tradition
In the best tradition of the theatre, the road show sent out press copy three weeks in advance of the one night stands. The Footlighters played to packed houses wherever they went.
A good will offering was taken at each performance to cover the royalty fees on the play, the expense of special equipment, gasoline for the two cars, and evening meals for each performer. Any surplus will be used to aid migrant families in Arizona.
Ever mindful of the group’s missionary work, arrangements were made during the trip to send a carfull of the youth to the Eloy Settlement house for a week’s work to aid the program there, and to send another work party to the Apache Indians this summer.
