Faulkner is All-Tourney Choice at SD
Leslie "Hugh" Faulkner arrived from Monday after spending a week in Denver, competing for the San Diego entry, Gihalva Motors basketball team.
The San Diego five surprised everyone by reaching the semi-final of the big 32-team A. U. tournament. Big (6 feet 8 inch) Hugh played the past position for the San Diego quintet, and was named to the all-tournament squad for his brilliant performances. The San Diego quintet won the third place position by downing the Everybody's Drug team from Butz Gene, Ore.
Los Angeles Miners
An underarmed Bob Alamitos naval air station team based by former All-American Georgia Yardley who poured 29 points through the hoop in the AAU finals, lost the championship to the defending campions, Peoria "Deisel Cats" in the final game last Saturday, by 78-62.

Lou Wilke, veteran national basketball chairman for the AAU, named Yardley "the greatest basketball player in the world today."
Named on the AAU all-star team were Peoria's Howie Williams for the third straight year; Dan Pippen, Peoria, of Eugene; Pranil McCabe and Ron Bontemps of Peoria Jim Hoyerder, Glendon Anderson, and Leslie Paulkner of San Diego; Yardley and Johnny Arndt of Los Alamitos.
Gun Clubs Split Honors in Local Range Rifle Shoot
The Kwikset Gun club and the Anaheim Gun club split the six medals offered in a rifle match between the two clubs Sunday at the police range in Anaheim.
Gene Sievers and E. Taylor of the Anaheim club placed first and second, Robert Smiley of Kwikset, was third in the men's division.
Lois Titus and Dorothy Carter, Kwikset, paced the women's division followed by Helen Smith of the Anaheim club.
Medals were awarded to the first three players in each division.
Following is the complete results of the men's competition: Steven Taylor, Smiley J. Howell, Anaheim, Dan Smith, Anaheim, Ken Fryer, Kwikset, and B. Watters, Anaheim, the Bruce Carter, Al Stundtner, Joe Headlee, Gray Crow, and Bud Shelley, all of Kwikset.
Women's competition: Titus Carter, Smith and Jo Shelley, Kwikset.
It has been announced that the police range will be open to all members of rifle clubs for shooting on Sundays beginning at 10 am.
Ritz Cleaners won their fourth straight game Tuesday night and in doing so took home the City league playoff championship trophy. Ritz downed a hard fight Northrop five in as exciting a ball game as anyone could ask for. The final score was 65-46.
Hugh Panlkner, the City league player of the year, set a new record for the Recreation league games when he received a total of 21 free throws. Big Hugh captured the evening's scoring honors as he sank seven field goals and 13 of his 21 charity tosses. Bob Stuart of the winning Ritz five finished a close second to Faulkner as he connected for eight two-pointers, and hit a thousand per cent on his trips to the free-throw line, sinking ten out of ten of his charity tosses for a total of 26 digets. The Cleaners' Don Bryant also plugged in 19 big points to help the winners cause.
Ed Farr put the Nothrop quintet ahead at the start of the game when he raced in for a lay-in. Then Bob Stuart hit a jump shot, Don Bryant connected on a 20-foot beave from the side and Ritz were never headed. They led 13 to 7 at the end of the first quarter, and 28-22 at the half way mark. In the third period the Cleaner boys sank 20 points while Northrop could muster only 14. The third period ended with Ritz leading 48-36. In the last four of the ball game Northrop collected only 10 points, eight of which six-foot eight-inch Hugh Faulkner collected, while Don Bryant and Bob Stuart were going wild as they combined for 14 of Ritz last 17 digets.

Kwikset, Union Oil Fives To Meet in League Finals
Kwikset scored its second upset victory over the usually high scoring Rosan, Inc., five, 53-25, in their decider of the Industrial Basketball league semi-finals. The nightcap of last Wednesday's double-header saw the league champion Union Oil team run over an AUHS Netmen Hand Compton HI 7 to 1 Beating
The Colonist tennis team captured both doubles and three out of four of the singles matches Monday to hand the Compton high school netmen a 7 to 1 beating.
Anaheim started the day with a loss when their first singles ace, Ronnie Legg, ran into difficulty and dropped his set, 2-8, 3-8.
Dean Stokes put the defending Sunset league champions back on the right track as he won the second singles 6-2 and 8-6. Mike Bouck won convincingly in his match, then Barry Ryan come out on top 8-7 in his first game and breezed through his second 6-1 to put the Blue and Gold out in front 3 to 1.
The locals captured both doubles games to bring the final total to 7-1. The Colonists are well on their way to living up to their name as the top tennis school in Orange county. Coach Bill Cook deserves a great deal of the credit for the enviable record of four straight Sunset league championships his netmen have brought home to their school.
Local Girls Win Shooting Honors
Two Anaheim girls took honors in the Rifle Matches held at El Monte recently. LeDema Lattin captured high girl honors with a 179 out of a possible 200 score in the prone and hand events. Miss Lattin brought home a cup and a silver medal for her achievements. She also won the right to keep a perpetual trophy awarded to the winner of the events, for a period of three months.
Miss Lattin also won a bronze medal for placing fifth in the Class "B" competition.
Velva Brooklyn shot a 197 score in the Class "C" competition.
Basketball Wheel Chair Slated at
One of the nation's chair basketball teams into action March 24th. The Flying Wheels team of the Long Beach hospital meets the Salge varsity basketball Long Beach city college.

Bob Williams won the league title, and the individual trophies. The Optimist club and Ritz Cleaners finished in a tie for the league runner-up spot. Ritz Cleaners won the playoff team trophy.
Anahi JV Loses To Excelsior
Anaheim high's JV baseballers dropped a close 3-2 tilt to the junior varsity nine of Excelsior high Thursday afternoon.
Coach Bill Hicks' ace hurler, Rudy Peralta, limited the Pilots to two hits, but was the victim of poor support. The Excelsior nine capitalized on those two hits plus two Colonist errors to come from behind to nip the locals in the sixth inning.
Anaheim's two runs came in the fifth frame.

Basketball in Wheel Chairs Slated at LBCC
One of the nation's finest wheel chair basketball teams will go into action March 28 when the Flying Wheels all-star cage team of the Long Beach veterans' hospital meets the Santa Ana college varsity basketball team at Long Beach city college auditorium.
The game is sponsored by Scout troop 25 of Garden Grove. Playing from wheel chairs will be a new experience for the sharpshooters from Santa Ana. The Flying Wheels, however, have seen action on courts across the nation for six years. They play an entertaining brand of basketball which offers unusual action, skill and strategic ball handling.
Large crowds have turned out to see the paraplegics play in many of their public appearances. Wheel chair basketball began in World War II at Birmingham VA hospital, Van Nuys, when it was found a fast sport could be developed from the skillful maneuvering of wheel chairs without the use of the jegs.
For many paraplegics it meant the difference between a life of idleness and a chance to demonstrate skill and dexterity although chair bound.
The Flying Wheels-Santa Ana college game is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the gymnasium at Lakewood and Carson, Long Beach. Tickets are $1 for adults and 50 cents for kids. Tickets may be purchased at the gate.

Anahi Loses Swim Meet to Santa Ana
Anaheim high's swim team dropped a 44-31 swim meet with Santa Ana last Wednesday at the Santa Ana pool.
Joe Critchfield won the 100-yard backstroke event for the locals, and in doing so set a new Anaheim high school record.
Joe swam the century in 1:11.4. Critchfield also anchored the medley relay team to win over the Saints in that event. Fred Frank won the individual medley for the AUHS team.
