The county total was $1,140,255, according to records of County Building Inspector Charles Donohue. 19-Year-Old Countians Drafted Selective service calls during March have drafted several 19-year-olds in Orange county for military service. It was disclosed by Mrs. Stella Crawley, coordinator of draft boards. She said, however, that she had no idea just how many 19-year-old draftees have been called. This is the first time selective service has applied to that age group since start of the Korean war. Church Variance Denied by Supers County supervisors Tuesday refused a variance permit for a new church requested by the Assembly of God congregation at Los Alamitos. Twenty-three neighbors of the site proposed petitioned the board to deny the permit and one of them explained that yesterday's board meeting that "sometimes they get kind of noisy." The board did grant a variance permit to Knott's Chaney and Stewart for a trailer park on six acres at the southwest corner of Halbor blvd. and Ball rd., south Anaheim. This area is expected to be annexed to the city shortly. Goodwill Officers Assume New Jobs New officers of Goodwill Industries of Orange county for 1953 assumed duties of their respective offices at Monday's meeting of the board of directors, when Edward S. Goodner of Santa Ana took over the president's gavel from retiring president, Gaylord Hicks. Mrs. Nan Moore of Anaheim is retiring secretary of the board. Mrs. Anton Segerstrom of Santa Ana succeeded her. Demos Shakarian of Norwalk-Downey area is the new vice president, and Alex Brownridge of Santa Ana is treasurer. Shakarian, prominent dairyman and developer, has property interests in the Buena Park area. President Goodner sounded a call to service to the needy handicapped of the county, for whom Goodwill Industries provides employment. Other officers expressed their desire to serve, and paid tribute to the humanitarian work of the organization. New Zealanders eat about 39 pounds of butter a year on the average, which is believed to be more than is used by the people of any other country. Keith Murdoch Addresses P.T.A Group on Legislative Bill The important legislative bill which proposes an alternate route for trucks on Orangethorpe, thus freeing Center st. from much of its heavy traffic and attendant dancers, was discussed by Keith Murdoch, Araheim city manager, before the Lincoln PTA Thursday afternoon, March 12. Murdoch stressed that the added safety for Lincoln school children which this project would bring, would also hast Anaheim taxpayers more money, since the state would no longer support the upkeep of this highway. S. B. 91, a bill by State Senator John Murdy, to expand the orange county water district and make it taxing authority to import more water, was explained by Murdoch. He said that this bill would call for an eight cent ad valorem tax on land and improvements to cover costs of bringing water into our basin to counteract salt-water intrusion. He pointed out the great number of pending bills that tend to tard taking the authority that might belong to civic government and placing it under state direction, completely disregarding possible needs of the taxpayer. The last bill discussed regarded the legal liability of cities. The recent number of adverse judgments against smaller cities has resulted in a number of bills that will cause tighter liability laws. Murdoch concluded by saying that there were more than 5000 bills now presented in Sacramento and it is in the voter's interest to find out as much as he can about them.
