Bill Ames Wins Spot on Helms GIF T Bill Ames, the sharpshooting guard of the '58 Colonist basketball team, received added laurels this week when he was selected for a position on the second team of the all-C.I.F. basketball team chosen by the Helms Board of Baseline ball recently. Ames had previously gained local honors for action on the hardwood. During the past season Bill was awarded a position on the all-tournament team at the Huntington Beach tournament for his Colonists Shut Out Whittier Nine, 4 to 0 The A. U. H. S. baseballers capitalized on the big inning as they decisioned the Whittier nine 4 to 0 Tuesday afternoon. Hurler Dave Stephenson went all the way for the Colonists and recorded his first shutout victory. It was Dave who starred the big four-run fifth inning that brought the Colonists their third straight win. Dave doubled to open the innings, then Clinton Wells surprised the opposition by bunting and beat it out. Coach John Wallin inserted speedy Lupe Gonzales into the game to run for Wells and the attempted double steal materialized with Stephenson romping home on the catches throwing error. Gonzales galloped home on anotherbum throw, but it was discovered that the Colonist "eager" manager had retrieved the ball, thus causing it to become dead. Gonzales was returned to third base. Pat Roberts singled, scoring Lupe and Dave Moody walked to put two men on. As is his habit of late Val Wielhorn came through with a booming double to score both men. This accounted for all play during league competition on the first team. Fellow teammates chose Bill as the team's most valuable player without a dissenting vote. Player of the Year Chosen St. Anthony high school's William Bond, who must rate high among the top scoring prep basketball players in Southern California history, was selected as C. I. F. basketball player of the year. Bond was named the top performer in C. I. F. ranks following several ballots which listed several other outstanding prep players. No school placed more than one representative on this year's first and second teams. Bill Bond finished his three-year basketball stint at St. Anthony high school with a 15.37 average. During this period he scored 137 points in 100 games. This past season Bill played 33 games and scored 727 points for an average of 22 points per contest. Bevo Francis of Rio Grande fame is said to hold the national scholastic season record of 776 points. During the season Bond also broke the C. I. F. single game scoring record as he dumped in 59 points to lead his team to a 74-62 victory over Serra. During the year Bond was named player of the Catholic league tournament, and gained all-tournament recognition on the first team at Compton and Long Beach. Named to the first team forward positions were Billy J. Smith of Ventura, Gabe Arrillage of Inglewood, Russell Tyler of Long Beach Wilson and Bond. Bill Smith, a first team repeater from last year's squad, scored 432 points in 27 games. He was named most valuable player in the Fillmore tournament and a first team mem. The Oilers captured their playoff win with surprising ease, as they dropped the third place Alpha Beta five 53-33. In the second game of the evening, Kwikset Lock scored a minor upset over the second place Rosan, Inc., quintet; as they grabbed an early lead, and staved off the Rosan comeback to win 43-37. John Powell of the Rosan team showed why he was the leaguer's leading scorer, when he scored 25 of his team's 37 point total. Big 6-foot 6-inch Abe Bullington of the Union Oil five led his teammates to their victory by pushing in 14 digits. Big Abe also controlled the rebounds as he has been doing for the past season.
