Decision Expected Mar. 1
Decision of the Santa Ana civil service board on the suspension of three Santa Ana police officers charged by Chief B. A. Hershey with insubordination, is expected soon after March 10, in accordance with orders issued by the board at the conclusion last night of its hearings in the case.
Chief Hershey was on the witness stand last night as one of County Orders
Evacuation of Surfside Homes
Five families at Surfside received written notices from the Orange county health department yesterday, to evacuate their homes for sanitary reasons. Some 30 feet of sewer line in Sunset Beach Sanitary District, which serves Surfside, has been washed away by wave erosion of the ocean.
Besides the five occupied dwellings, another five vacant homes are involved in the evacuation order. Notices were posted there instructing the owners not to reoccupy the dwellings.
E. E. Frisble, chief sanitarian at the health department, indicated that the sewer line will not be repaired until the community does something to protect the line from recurrence of the washout.
The county supervisors recently requested the federal government to assume full responsibility for the beach erosion, caused by the Long Beach breakwater, and to assume full cost of repairing the damage. Extension of the breakboard and was allowed up March 9 to file them. West said that he would file his answer brief within 24 hours and receiving Webb's photo.

Thunderjets Strike within Fifty Miles of Siberia in Northern Korea
SEOUL (UP) — U. S. air force and navy planes sowed flaming ruin in northeast Korea Thursday climaxed by a record breaking 1000-mile Thunderjet raid only 50 miles from Siberia.
Three raids struck northeast Korea in trip mann Korea in trin-hammer succession while other fighter-bombers in the northwest pounded targets near the north Korean capital of Pyongyang, an area where a smoke haze still hung from a Superfort smash the night before.
"Mo Active"
At Wonsan, the "Mighty Mo" steamed boldly into harbor and churned the rubble of that eastern port for three hours with its 16-inch rifles. Not until the battleship Missouri began to pull away did Red shore guns dare to fire back, and then they missed badly.
The blows by sea and air overshadowed small clashes along the 155-mile front, where there was a whiff of spring in the warming air after a night of light snow.
Industrial buildings and power and mining installations went up in smoke and debris in the three raids in the northeast.
Fifteen Thunderjets on their longest combat mission of the war flew 500 miles from base and smashed an industrial district near Chongjin, on the east coast 50 miles south of the Siberian border.
Pilots reported they left the target area in smoking ruin with at least nine buildings smashed. The target is about 140 miles from the big Russian sea port and base of Vladivostok.
Jets Broaden Scope
Thunderjets whose range has been about 500 miles in the past, have been venturing farther and farther from bases. The Fifth air force boasted Thunderlets can fly even farther than to Chongjin.
About 100 miles southwest of Chongjin, planes from the aircraft carrier Valley Forge dumped 50 tons of bombs on the Chongjin's reservoir power installations. Changjin is an important source of North Korean electricity.
Some 85 miles south of Chongjin, planes from the carrier Oriskany unloaded 25 tons of bombs on lead and zinc mine installations near Songjin.
Ruling Expected Later
At the conclusion of the hearing, Attorney Z. B. West, representing Chief Hershey, waived opening argument to the service board and offered to mit the case as it stood. Attorney Webb, however, asked leat to submit court authorities to board and was allowed until March 9 to file them. West said that he would file his answer brief within 24 hours and receiving Webb's brief.
The board is expected to take both briefs under advisement to give its ruling later, not only the case of Adams and Pemberton but also in the suspension Motorcycle Officer Harrel Daisy, charged with being intoxicated while on duty.

Growing Up ...
to Growing Pains
The top management, owners and operators of the Anaheim Gazette love the newspaper business and the service we do for the community and citizens of this area. For two and half years we have been coming to your doorstep five days a week. Prior to that time the Gazette appeared every week. After Sunday it will again start weekly publication and will hit your door-step each Thursday.
We have decided, because discretion is the better part of valor, to follow the business experience of other small dailies in fast growing areas, especially Los Angeles county, and look the problem of the small town merchant squarely in the face. We also want to look our own problem right between the eyes. Shall we spend our publishing budget on national and international news coverage, or, shall we use the budget to give the local news and the local merchant coverage of the hundreds of new people coming into the area who do not have the
We have decided, because discretion is the better part of valor, to follow the business experience of other small dailies in fast growing areas, especially Los Angeles county, and look the problem of the small town merchant squarely in the face. We also want to look our own problem right between the eyes. Shall we spend our publishing budget on national and international news coverage, or, shall we use the budget to give the local news and the local merchant coverage of the hundreds of new people coming into the area who do not have the trade loyalty that seems to be inherent in some of us oldtimers.
In other words we are no longer an integral community but are fast becoming part of a vast metropolitan area whose opportunities, ramifications and proclivities had better enter into all our calculations or we may wind up seeing the business going by our door.
These are some of the things we see. They are not new in southern California. We here, by taking advantage of the experience of other communities like ours, should be able to eliminate many of the pitfalls brought on by growth, a terrific freeway system which makes distance no object and realizing that we are steadily becoming a part of the largest metropolitan area the world has ever seen.
We have faced the problem and decided to take the position of being of the most service to the growth of our area instead of trying to be a "big hot shot" with the danger of having our ego as well as our pocketbook stepped upon.
The subscription rates will remain the same . . . 50c a month or $5.00 a year, the same as they were when we started to publish daily . . . these subscription rates were never changed, when we went into daily publication.
We'll be seeing you—every week—on Thursday.
Investigation of City Government Demanded by Newport Councilman
Complete investigation of Newport Beach city government was requested yesterday by Councilman Andrew Smith of that city, in letters addressed to both the Orange county grand jury and State Attorney General Edmund J. Brown.
Smith complained to the attorney general that the swank Balboa Bay club, a private establishment, is on leased public beach, in violation of a state law preserving such beaches, parks and recreation areas for public use.
He declared that it was inconsistent for the state to enact legislation and allocate funds for preservation and conservation of public parks, beaches, and recreational areas, and then stand by and allow a violation.
Smith also complained of card games in the city, noting that skillo games are allowed some places and forbidden to operate in other locations.
He further complained that the death comes after days after

Electric Cut-Off Faced as Union Discussion Stops
Power cut-off in Southern California appeared as a possibility as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers called a strike for 3 a.m. this morning when negotiations between the union and Southern California Edison company broke down last night.
Negotiators were still attempting to reach a settlement before the strike deadline arrived.
Although not covered directly by the Edison company, Anaheim Department of Water and Power receives its power from the Edison company.
In the event that no agreement is reached, temporary plans have been mapped by company officials to cover critical needs, though these plans were still in the tentative stage as of last night.
Planners OK Buena Park Potter Plant

The enlargement will consist of provision for an off-street parking area.
Chamber Extends Membership Drive
The Anaheim Chamber of Commerce drive, scheduled to end Tuesday evening, was continued for another two days as Chamber directors complained that the two-day drive was not long enough to allow them to cover their territory.
The results of the extended drive, coupled with the membership attained in the first two days, will bring the total membership well over the goal of 400, Ernie Moeller, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, said.
The Chamber of Commerce has never previously been able to reach the set goal in any of their previous drives, he said.

Say! Are You Sincere?
By Pastor Bob Kevorkian
First Baptist Church
"If a man is sincere . . . ?" Wait a minute! There are far fewer sincere people than you think. Most of the ignorance that youare worried about is willful ignorance. Many people never wantto know the full truth. It may cost them too much.Listen to theconfession of a well-known writer, Gamaliel Bradford. In his JournalBradford writes: "I do not dare toread the New Testament for fear of awakening a storm of anxiety and self-reproach and doubtand dread of having taken the wrong path, of having been traitorto the plain and simple God."
How startling! But before*we judge him let us examine ourselves.
"Ignorance is bliss. I never find myself to be wrong. What couldI ask for to give myself a more pleasant experience?" Perhapsmany people never go to church because they are afraid they maybe disturbed in their little sinful lives by the upsetting power of thetruth. This type of ignorance is willful, though strange as it mayseem, it is often cloaked in the guise of a sincere well-meaningness.
How can we expect God to bless and favor us while we play Himfor the fool? How naive can we become? Imagine that we canlook God in the face and say, "But God, I did not know your demands."
"Ignorance of the law is no excuse" whether it be willful or not.Neither is willful camouflage. God holds us responsible for every truth which we could have learned but did not bother to learn.
