Edison Co., Union Negotiations Fail
Negotiations for a new working contract between the Southern California Edison Co. and local 47, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (AFL) which have been under way for approximately four months, have failed to result in an agreement. The present contract between the company and the union expired at midnight last night.
The union demands include the establishment of a union shop, double time pay for overtime instead of time and a half and a wage increase of 25 cents per hour.
The company recently completed negotiations with the CIO union on the property for an increase of 5 per cent or $15 per month retroactively effective to Jan. 1 for all employees other than those represented by the AFL. The same increase was offered to the AFL group but has not been accepted. Present wages of Edison employees after the increase are as high or higher than those paid for similar jobs in comparable companies the company declared.
The company is continuing to negotiate with the union in an effort to settle the controversial issues. In the event that there should be a work interruption, the company is making plans to maintain electric service to all of its customers.

Evening Income Tax Telephone Service Arranged
In an effort to render the greatest possible service to individuals in the preparation of their federal income tax returns, arrangements have been completed by Robert A. Riddell, director of internal revenue, to provide evening telephone service in all established internal revenue offices during the final days of the filing period so that persons who are employed during the day may secure advice and aid regarding their income tax problems.
Telephone inquiries, of course, are answered during regular office hours, 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., every day of the week, including Saturdays. Biddell states that this special service will be available until 9 p.m., beginning Monday, March 9, and continuing daily though Friday, March 13; and also on the last day of the filing period, Monday, March 16, until the offices close at midnight.
The telephone number of each internal revenue office may be found in the telephone directory under the heading "United States government, and under the subhead, "Internal Revenue."
In addition to telephone service, all internal revenue offices will be open each week day, including Saturdays, and agents are in attendance to aid taxpayers with their problems, if they prefer to visit the offices. On the closing day of the filing period, advice will be available, and completed returns may be filed in any of the offices until midnight.
Fake Jobless Claims Charged in State Assembly
SACRAMENTO, March 4.
CNS) - The question of whether 20,000,000 annually is being poured into the pockets of fraudulent unemployment insurance claims, or whether the charge is erroneous, will be before the California Assembly today.
A resolution by Assemblyman Harold Levering, Santa Monica, asking for a thorough probe into the charges, made by Wm. Burkett, representative of a group of associations, has been approved by the assembly rules committee, and scheduled for immediate action on the floor of the house.
Speaker James W. Silliman, Sananas, said flatly that "either the charges should be proved and the department put on the spot, or disproved and Burkett excoriated or making them." Silliman referred to the state department of employment, which administers unemployment insurance.
At the same time, it was learned that Legislative Auditor A. Alan Post, who investigates all types of government activity on half of the state legislature, has and men quietly working in the department for the past two months.
The department itself never has had a complete audit of claims paid, the federal government having refused several times to foot the bill for such an audit. The re-insults have been in the face of the fact that federal auditors have been in the department since its operations started in 1936 auditing the administrative funds granted the state for operation of the department by the federal government.
Post's entry in the picture, legislators pointed out, means they expect some unvarnished facts with regard to the payment of audulent claims, although no expects to get full and complete figures on how much money has been paid out to chiselers who have worked out ways and means live off the unemployment insurance fund, which was originated in 1935 to protect workers who were 'involuntarily unemployed.'

The two groups will study conservation work in the Gloria and Mission Soledad soil conservation districts.
Film Depicts Life Of German Martyr At White Temple
"Pastor Hall," the inspiring story of a German pastor who refused to knuckle down to the Nazi dictatorship during World War II, will be screened at the regular 7 o'clock Sunday evening service at White Temple Methodist church.
It is the true story of one of the hundreds of devout Lutheran ministers in Germany who remained faithful to their gospel despite the threat of concentration camp, forced labor, torture or imprisonment. Now that churches in all eastern Europe are again forced by the Communists to make the same heroic choice, the story is an extremely timely one, and is a glastly reminder to Americans of the high cost of liberty such as we enjoy. It's an hour and a half long. The public is invited.
