Sen. Jenner's Security Committee—Given Tongue-Lashing by Teacher WASHINGTON (UP)—A retired school teacher from New York, who refused to say whether she is a red, gave members of the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee a tongue-lashing Tuesday. She said they used "cloak and dagger" tactics to depict her as a mystery woman in the com-munist underground. "You've assailed my name and blackened my character," she cried, waving her black-gloved hands in the faces of the startled senators. "And I want to say right here and now that I am shocked and indignant at the treatment this committee has given me." The witness was Miss Tima D. Ludins, a former New York high school teacher who was accused in previous testimony of organizing a communist underground in the schools. Chairman Jenner (R-Ind.) accompanied her remarks with his gavel, banging and shouting that she was just supposed to answer questions. He ordered her remarks stricken from the record. Dressed in a tan coat with a gold and white hat cocked on her head, Miss Ludins refused to state whether she is a member of the communist party. She also refused to answer when asked if she had ever attended secret meetings of the party. Jenner's committee is hunting for organized subversion in the nation's schools and colleges. Last October, John Lautner, a self-described former red, told the committee that "Tima" was active in establishing a communist underground among New York City school teachers in 1949. Miss Ludin had several other wrangles with the senators. At one point she declared, "The whole country is going to rise up against this committee, because this is the end of democracy." "You haven't been able to produce one iota of evidence that a child is being indoctrinated with the predecessor of Uncle Sam as the symbolic representative of the American was Brother Jonathan, dating from the Revolution. The term Uncle Sam is said to have originated during the War of 1812." Announcements Cemetery LOMA VISTA MEMORIAL PARK Fullerton, California Endowment Care Provided Phone Lambert 5-1575 Res. (Pick-up & del.), irons, foasters, vacuum cleaners. Seven charred bodies were found beneath debris on the mezzanine of a furniture factory at 150th Street and River Avenue—near the Harlem River and only seven blocks below Yankee Stadium. Although there was a fire alarm box on the corner the furniture workers fought the blaze themselves for 20 minutes. Only the chance passing of John T. Oakley, acting deputy fire chief, resulted in an alarm. "Had any of them turned in an alarm," Oakley said, "possibly none would have succumbed to the fire." Fire Marshall Martin Scott said acetylene torches in the hands of two iron workers apparently started the blaze. The pair were cutting through the mesh screen of a window to a storeroom crammed with combustible material. Huge glass factory windows, criss-crossed with steel supports, hampered firemen, who could not go in and out through them. A machine operator, Caroline Dobson, 28, told of the lackless woman whose concern for her coat cost her life. "All I could see was fire," Miss Dobson recounted. "When I saw the flames in the back of the building, I picked up my purse and ran with one of the girls who was killed. She would not have been killed if she didn't go back for her coat. We were running down the main floor ramp to the street and she turned to go back for her coat. That's the last I saw of her." The fire raged out of control for two hours and 20 minutes, boosted by dust explosions within the structure. A temporary morgue was set up in a fruit market across the street. A dozen firemen collapsed for lack of oxygen — the blinding flames and choking smoke too much even for their oxygen masks. Michael Rosalsky, owner of the furniture factory, wept on the sidewalk outside, sobbing: "I hope all my girls are out." Bill Encourages Aged to Become Self-Supporting SACRAMENTO (AP)—The assembly social welfare committee Tuesday endorsed a bill it was told would encourage old age pensioners to become self supporting, at least for part of the year. "Aged persons now are in deathly fear that once they get off the pension rolls they'll have trouble getting back on," said Assemblyman Harold K. Levring (Belois). Miss Ludin had several other wrangles with the senators. At one point she declared, "The whole country is going to rise up against this committee, because this is the end of democracy." "You haven't been able to produce one lota of evidence that a child is being indoctrinated with communism," she said. Miss Ludins maintained the committee has "no jurisdiction" in the educational field, contending this was the province of state and local officials. Tax Official Squirms under Senate Probing WASHINGTON (AP)—Donald S. Tydings, a balding tax official, acknowledged palmfly Tuesday that he was buying diamond-studded jewelry for a woman friend at a time he was in trouble over a $3,000 bank loan guaranteed by a man described as a notorious law violator. He also admitted that an explanation he gave federal agents concerning the use of loan money was "figment of imagination." Tydings, 56, a cousin of former U.S. Senator Millard E. Tydings, of Maryland, frequently sat silent or simply muttered, "I don't know." when a house ways and means subcommittee confronted him with repeated inconsistencies in his statements. Tydings, $8,700 a year revenue official, is under investigation by the subcommittee for his activities between 1944 and last December when he was enforcement chief of the alcohol tax division district office in Atlanta, Ga. The subcommittee is investigating political influences on the internal revenue service. Committee Counsel John Tobin referred to a treasury memorandum in which Tydings was reported to his superiors as "having an affair with a former employee" of the Atlanta office. Tydings flatly denied this. He said he knew the woman—he was a friend of her's, and a friend of her family. Under questioning, Tydings said he bought a fur coat, "but not for any employee." He was then asked if he bought the woman a muskrat coat for Christmas, 1945, from J. P. Allen Co., of Atlanta. In an almost inaudible voice, Tydings said: "I didn't buy her a coat. I gave for organized subversion in the nation's schools and colleges. Aged to Become Self-Supporting SACRAMENTO (AP)—The assembly social welfare committee Tuesday endorsed a bill it was told would encourage old age pensioners to become self-supporting, at least for part of the year. "Aged persons now are in deathly fear that once they get off the pension rolls they'll have trouble getting back on," said Assemblyman Harold K. Levering (R-Los Angeles). His bill would require counties to resume payment within a month after a pensioner quits work and directs the social welfare department to encourage self support among oldsters. The committee, however, refused passage of a bill prohibiting counties from disqualifying holders of burial policies from public assistance payments. William MacDougall, manager of the Association of County Supervisors, said it would violate the state's principle of home rule in welfare qualifications. Assemblyman Vernon Kilpatrick (D-Los Angeles), author said the measure would have alleviated much grief in his district. Youth Steals 'March' Dimes LOS ANGELES (AP) — "This is just about as low as you can get," declared Municipal Judge Leroy Dawson Tuesday as he sentenced Edward L. Grinner, 18 to 30 days in jail. Grinner had been convicted of taking $6.36 from a miniature iron lung used to receive donations for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Judge Dawson also ordered the youth to pay $100 to the fund. Grinner was employed at the County General Hospital's information desk. When money began disappearing from the March of Dimes collection box, a guard sprinkled fluorescent powder over the contents.
