HS Prepares For CIF Final
Anahiem High will meet Huntington Beach this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the AUHS gym, in their final tuneup game before the CIF basketball finals.
The Beach City basketteers suffered their first loss since running through the Sunset League undefeated, as they bowed to the Laguna Beach Artists Wednesday night, 48-46. According to Coach Bill Hunstock, today's game will be played on the order of a scrimmage, with the possibility that the Varsity five will play one game, and the "Substitutes" vying against each other in a game of their own.
Mike Beach, the "B" league's leading scorer, has been moved up to the Varsity and it is reported that he may win a starting berth for the playoffs if he remains as "automatic" in his shooting as he has in recent scrimmages. Coach Hunstock says that Mike needs plenty of work on his defensive play; but at the rate he is hitting the basket should outscore whoever he is assigned to guard.
There will be nothing at stake today, but Anahiem's desire to win over the big five will be reason enough for them to go all out in an attempt to defeat the league champions. The Oilers have twice beaten the Colonists this season. The Colonists will have to stop 6'6". Lack "Bevo" Stricklin to remain in the game. Stricklin hit for 43 points in the last contest between the two schools and might just try to top this in the longer encounter today. Dave Moody of Dennis Ryan will probably get the "honor" of guarding the high scoring center.

Anaheim Cadet Rifle Team Wins Area Crown
Anaheim high school cadet rifle team took another step forward on its journey to the state finals Saturday night when they defeated Oceanside high school cadets to win the area championship.
The Colonist riflemen took all three divisions of the shoot—individual, five-man team, and 10-man team.
State matches will be held on March 26-27 and 28 in Sacramento. Anaheim is defending champion.
In the 10-man majors, Anaheim fired 4123 against their opponents' 1563. The Colonist five-man team scored 872 against Oceanside's 840. Gene Waldo and Bob Boney will represent Anaheim in individual matches at the state trials.
Members of Anaheim's 10-man team were:
Phil Wright, Walde, Gary Barnett, Jim Roe, Bill Collyer, Stanley Goss, Boney; Bill Ensmeyer, Donald Merritt and Don Caylor.
The Anaheim cadets won a Southern California Rifle federation match last night in both A and B divisions by defeating Inglewood on the Anaheim Associated Rifle club range.
Anaheim A division shooters ran up a score of 766 against their opponents' 783. Colonist B shooters with handicap added also made 786 while Inglewood scored 761.
Ballman’s TVers Hit Win Colum By Downing Midway City, 68-5
The Ballmans’ TVers jumped back in the win column last night as they downed the Midway City Chinchilla’s 68-34, in the Huntington Beach high school gym.
The locals picked up Bob Stuart of the Ritz Cleaner five to help out as four of the local boys couldn't make the trip. Bob, along with Manager Jim Wright, who suited up for the occasion, brought the number of men on hand to six.
Marshall Styll, Ballman’s ace forward took over the center slot and did a tremendous job of rebounding and scoring. Marshall Old Song—Stanky Still Likes Bilko
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (P) — An old, familiar melody was sounded Thursday — St. Louis Cardinal Manager Eddie Stanky likes the way Steve Bilko looks.
This is the fourth spring Bilko has tried to make the grade at first base with the Redbirds.
“I know he’s a big man,” Stanky said about big Steven Dyer in previous years. Bilko looked each spring like a power hitter.
“If only he can hit that big league pitching this year,” Stanky concluded.

Mining of Famed Santa Anita Scheduled for Saturday
Hit Win Column Way City, 68-54
It hit 10: field goals and one free throw for a total of 21 digits.
Playing headups ball were the two little men out front, as Ira Webber and newcomer Bob Stuart each garnered 13 points. Most of their points came on their fast break down the floor.
The TVers jumped off to an early 4 to 4 lead in the first quarter but couldn't hold it as center Phil Libert of the Beach quintet hit four buckets in a row to put the townsters back in the ball game. The Arnheim boys led at the halftime period 29-28, and after the intermission took the same under control and were never headed. Roger Pannier and captain Bill Walker were very effective in clearing the boards or the TVers.
ARCADIA (AP) — If little else, the 16th running of Santa Anita's famed $100,000 Handicap Saturday will be overflowing with sentiment, its rich purse, noted jockeys and the slightest tinge of international flavor.
It will also boast at least two horses of recognized ability, Calumet Farm's Mark-Ye-Well and the Brookfield Farm's Intent.
The international touch, in contrast to past years when the race was actually won by such imported horses as Noor, Talon, Kayak II, Miche, Olhavvery and Azucar, is sort of second hand this time.
Mexican Owner
About all that can be said in this respect is that one horse, Don Rebelde, has a Mexican name, a Mexican owner and won all his major races in Mexico. But he is a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old:
This year, more so than at any time, outstanding handicap horses are scarce. Some are on the sidelines with injuries, and some just aren't racing at Santa Anita.
The sentiment might rest on the dependable shoulders of Mrs. Rea Warner’s Trusting. He is a full brother of California’s biggest money winner, On Trust, who also experienced the distinction of losing the $100,000 Handicap and Santa Anita’s $100,000 Maturity by a nose and a neck, and managed to do it in the same year, 1948.
Shoemaker on Trusting
Trusting, to be ridden by the leading rider at the meeting, Willie Shoemaker, won the recent San Antonio Handicap carrying 118 pounds. Saturday he carries 112, and with Mark-Ye-Well shouldering 130 and Intent 137, might conceivably succeed where his older brother failed.
Mark-Ye-Well, who didn’t run in the San Antonio but who captured the Maturity, will be under the alert care again of Edward Arcaro, and unless misfortune befalls one or the other, the Calumet bay from Kentucky should win in a waltz, despite the 130 pounds.
Intent, who races for Harry Isaacs’ Maryland Stable but was bred in Kentucky, missed fire in the San Antonio, running fourth to Trusting. Don Rebelde and Alfred G. Vanderbilt’s First Glance.
As matters stand, the others in the Field will be First Glance.
Fullerton Jaycee Cagers to Vie in Tourney Playoffs
The Fullerton Junior College basketball team will meet the champions of the Coast Conference in the State Junior College tournament playoffs which start next March 5.
The tournament will be held in the new Long Beach City College gym. This will make the fourth time in as many years that the Hornets have represented the Eastern Conference in the state finals.
While Fullerton has yet to win the tournament they have always made a good showing against the usually more favored ball clubs. In the 1950 campaign the FJC boys went to the finals of the state get together only to drop a close decision to the national champion Ventura team.

Richest Race for Three-Year-Olds To be Televised from Hialeah Park
MIAMI, Fla. (UP)—The beauty of tropical Florida in mid-winter, plus the richest horse race ever run by three-year-olds, will be brought to a nationwide television audience Saturday when the Flamingo Stakes is decided at Hialeah park.
Track officials expect 16 to 20 of the nation's fastest three-year-olds to go to the post and if 18 start the race will gross $157,600, with the winner's share $120,400. The race is at a mile and one-eighth.
Richest race ever run in this country for three-year-olds was the Arlington classic last summer with a gross purse of $150,-450 and a net to the winner of $105,375.
The race shapes up as one of the best since it was first run in 1926 at Tampa Downs.
Early favorites include Green-tree stable's powerful entry of Straight Face and Powhatan, Eugene Constantin Jr.'s, Royal Bay Gem and Mrs. Vera S. Bragg's Tribe.
AUHS Opponent in Playoffs Unknown
The Anaheim High school basketball team knows they will take part in the CIF playoffs, but they don't know where they will play. Who they will play, or what time they will play. They do know, however, it will be next Tuesday.
Their opponent will be the victor of the yet-to-be-played game between San Diego and Point Loma.
All but one of the teams finishing first in their leagues will draw bye's in the first round. Santa Barbara, the only free lance team in the playoffs, will not draw a bye but is competing in the initial round of this year's high school basketball classic.
Huntington Beach, this year's NEW YORK UP — Agressive Lauro Salas, the former lightweight champion with the perpetual motion style, makes his Madison Square garden debut tonight against improving Pat Marcune of Brooklyn.
The crowd pleasing Mexican and the hard hitting Brooklynite were rated even in the betting Thursday for the 10 rounder. The bout will be broadcast ABC and telecast NBC.
This figures to be a punching bee. The 25-year-old Mexican comes out swinging with both hands in an effort to wear down his opponents. Marcune, a 24-year-old coast guardman, has developed a good kick in his right hand and has swept his last five fights.
Salas, who won once and lost twice in title bouts with light-weight king Jimmy Carter, rates the edge in experience. He has met the toughest featherweights and lightweights and probably will be favored by fight time. Marcune has confined himself to the featherweights.
