CARE Feeds East Berlin Refugees
Special five dollar CARE packages of food to help West Germany feed the thousands of escaping refugees from Communist terrorism have been stocked in west Berlin, Richard M. Thomas, local CARE chairman, announced today.
"By the thousands these refugees are streaming into west Germany which can give them shelter and security but cannot feed them all," Thomas said. "One camp opened for 1000 escapees

INSPIRATIONAL—If God be for us, who can be gainst us?—Rom. 8:31.
CIVIC PRIDE—Most Anaheimers have a lot of civic pride. Anaheim is a beautiful city of specious parks, beautiful homes, excellent schools and numerous churches. Anaheimers are industrious. They've brought manufacturing concerns to their fast-growing community to add payrolls to an enlarged economy. Anaheimers also have a heritage of a colorful historical past which is slowly developing a culture of its own. Anaheimers are pioneers, builders and developers. The ever-changing scene does not leave them behind. They're part of it as the transition builds a more promising future.
PASSING PARADE—Billy Askins is selling the good earth. The Englishman with a sense of humor who likes practical jokes. Most practical jokes are enjoyable when they're on the other fellow. Bert Galliers has come a long way since he and the Canadian Army made that big push in France more years ago than one likes to remember. But Bert hasn't had time to retire, though he is no longer actively following the oil game... Old Truck Hannah, one time Los Angeles Angels manager, stopped in town on his way to Fullerton with a rookie. Old Truck has retired. He was Joe Mene's manager after Anaheim's scouting police chief signed the lanky Frenchman to a baseball contract... Don (Bucky) Green is on a furlough from the Army. He's been busy introducing his pretty, blonde wife, to his legion of friends.
LINES-O-TYPE—Jim Betzold turned in his badge as a Fullerton policeman. The ex-Anaheimer discovered that a "city job doesn't provide the take-home pay." It should... Paul Demaree, Anahi administrator, is a good ambassador to imy conference. He rates high in the educational field... Joe Martin has renewed aquaintances with Ellay ball players in Fullerton. Special five dollar CARE packages of food to help West Germany feed the thousands of escaping refugees from Communist terrorism have been stocked in west Berlin, Richard M. Thomas, local CARE chairman, announced today.
"By the thousands these refugees are streaming into west Germany which can give them shelter and security but cannot feed them all." Thomas said. "One camp opened for 1000 escapees was filled to overflowing the first day. As many as 2500 have arrived in a single day.
"Each day makes new and serious demands upon west Germany's food supplies. These refugees come with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. They need immediate assistance. CARE has stocked these special five dollar food parcels ready to rush to the neediest as soon as orders from Americans are received."
Orders for the special packages or contributions in any amount may be sent to CARE, 835 S. Broadway, Los Angeles.
National Held for Carrying Weapons
A Mexican national was arrested yesterday by La Habra police, after he was found carrying a set of brass knuckles and concealing a pistol.
Pedro Engutan, who at first gave his name as Pedro Yang Yang Engutan, was placed in the county jail pending $2000 bail.
Preliminary hearing, ordered by Municipal Judge John Shea, was set for March 2.
ROME UP—Six Western European foreign ministers pledged themselves Wednesday night to urge their governments to approve a unified army as speedily as possible.
A communique issued at the end of a two-day meeting indicated this agreement "in principle" did not mean that serious differences between France and West Germany had been completely resolved.

LINES-O-TYPE — Jim Betzold turned in his badge as a Fullerton policeman. The ex-Anaheimer discovered that a "city job doesn't provide the take-home pay". It should ... Paul Demaree, Anahi administrator, is a good ambassador to any conference. He rates high in the educational field... Joe Martin has renewed aquaintences with Ellay ball players in Fullerton. He knows 'em all'. At Rothermael may not have to fight traffic to get his tamale wagon across Orangethorpe. They're actually putting in the signals at the corbner's corner. Actually getting the job done that was started months ago, and should have been done years ago.
ET CETRA—Bill Montague, the Anaheim rancher, believes "we could use a little more rain than we are getting." Someone said, that the smallness of the Valencia oranges is a direct result of the rainfall. Could be ... Haven't heard how Earl Jagfeld is making out in this year's bowling league, but Dick Foster must be doing all right. He always did, yknow... Sam Starbuck was another expert earlier, but like Vern Clark, he bowled for the fun of it... Clayton Mallory is getting set for another girls softball season. Incidentally, some Anaheim concern could get some good publicity by sponsoring Mallory's gals. They're ready for the big time, and they'd bring some mighty good publicity to the old home town.
OBSERVATIONS — Wonder if Dust Funist's experience with the offspring system reminded Louli Hawking of the winter wonderland he had in his back yard years ago? ... A number of high schools are by-passing the Pomona 20-30 invitational baseball tournament for the Pueblo and San Diego tournaments. It got too big.
Sen. Collier Asks Congress to
SACRAMENTO (AP) — Congress should investigate reports that gold is being smuggled out of the United States because of the low price of the precious metal in this country, Sen. Randolph Coller R-Yreka said in a resolution Wednesday.
It was one of several resolutions proposed requesting action by some other body while the Legislature waits for its own bills to reach the floor from committees.
Assemblyman Charles Edward Chapel R-Inglewood offered a resolution asking Congress to repeal the federal 1½ cent gas tax. In a separate measure, Sen. Coller would give the federal government the choice of going out of the gas taxing business or returning to the states for road building purposes all the gas tax it collects.
Sen. Edwin J. Regan D-Weaverville proposed that the State Water Project Authority be directed to comment on a congressional bill which would control but not ownership of Central Valley Project state.

With other volunteers now sorting, stuffing, sealing and folding the seals, the Crippled Children's society of Orange county will be ready by deadline time, Mrs. Bertaina reported.
In thanks the help of the local students, the chairman pointed out that the volunteer work by the Anaheim school people and others about the county made more actual money available for direct services to the county's crippled children.

Congress to Investigate Gold Smuggling
National bill which would transfer control but not ownership of the Central Valley Project to the state.
In other developments:
1. The Senate Public Health Committee decided with three members dissenting, to permit self closed meetings on controversial matters. All votes would be public. Assemblyman Ralph M. Brown D-Modesto, author of a secrecy in government bill asked for comment "all legislative committee action should be held in public."
2. Sen. Ben Hulse R-El Centro hold his Finance committee, beginning consideration of Gov. Warren's $1,327,000,000 budget, that balancing income and outgo this year "is not the complete answer." He said the budget would have be cut next year and two years now and even at that, he did, if revenues fall off it will mean deficit financing or new taxes.
3. Sen. Collier announced plans for a hearing March 17 on highway improvement measures, including his own billion dollar plan. On the other side Assemblyman Luther H. Lincoln R-Oakland said he would seek early committee consideration of his less ambitious proposal.
Collier, chairman of the Senate Transportation committee, advocates a 1½ cent increase in the 4½ cent state gas tax and a billion dollar bond issue; Lincoln's measure calls for a 1 cent increase. Collier told interviewers
"Theft of $17.50 from the cash register was reported to Santa Ana police today by William B. Wolfskill, owner of the Park and Wait shoe repair shop at 1032 S. Main St., Santa Ana. Burglars broke into the establishment last night and looted the cash drawer."
The difference between 1 and 1½ cents would be five years more time required for wiping out the state's highway deficiencies.
However, Sen. Regan, author of a third highway measure, indicated he may amend it down from 4½ to 1 cent.
"SECOND XAVIER' SEEN
GOA, Portuguese India (AP) — Catholics from throughout Asia, here for the 400th anniversary of the death of St. Francis Xavier, are praising a 'Second Xavier' who lived 100 years after St. Francis.
He is Father Jose Vaz of Benalim, Goa, whose beatification documents, revealing a great record of conversions and miracles, were completed by a special commission appointed from Rome. The tricentenary of the death of Father Jose Vaz was celebrated here last April."
