Six Killed, Ten Injured in Train Collision with Bus Near Brawley
BRAWLEY (P)—A bus and a train collided shortly before dawn Thursday and six Mexican contract farm laborers aboard the bus were killed.
Ten other bus passengers and the driver, Pedro Ruiz, Brawley, were taken to Pioneers Memorial hospital. No one on the Southern Pacific two-car freight and passenger train was hurt.
The bus wreckage was dragged 460 feet from the point of impact at the B-Street crossing near the eastern city limits. A truck driver parked nearby, James Bynum, said: "A streak of flame ran along the tracks for more than 50 feet. I don't see how anyone got out alive."
The bus was en route to a corrot field three miles south of Brawley, where the passengers were to tie bundles of the vegetables.
The train engineer, Barton Brown, Calexico, said the train's warning bell and whistle were sounded.
Six of the 10 injured were reported in critical condition.
