Detroit Manager Pins Hopes on His Pitchers to Get in Top Division
BY JOE REICHLER
TAMPA, Fla. (A)—The best pitching in the American League will not only lift the Detroit out of the cellar, but it will boost the club into the first division this season, according to Fred Hutchinson. Fearless Freddie, an active pitcher himself until he succeeded Red Rolfe at helm last July, has no illusions about the huge task confronting him, but he is convinced he nucleus of an up-and-coming club that should give the contenders a stiff battle within a year.
Hutch is pleased with the club's numerous trades and purchases since last spring that brought new blood in first baseman, Walter Dropo, shortstop, Harvey Kuenn.
Pitchers to Get in Top Division
BY JOE REICHLER
TAMPA, Fla. (P)—The best pitching in the American League will not only lift the Detroit out of the cellar, but it will boost the club into the first division this season, according to Fred Hutchinson. Fearless Freddie, an active pitcher himself until he succeeded Red Rolfe at the helm last July, has no illusions about the huge task confronting him, but he is convinced he nucleus of an up-and-coming club that should give the contenders a stiff battle within a year.
Hutch is pleased with the club's numerous trades and purchases since last spring that brought new blood in first baseman, Walter Dropo, shortstop, Harvey Kuenn, second baseman, Owen Friend, catcher, J. W. Porter and outfielders, Bob Nieman and Jake Crawford, but it is his conviction that it is the pitching that will carry the club.
Best in League
"I honestly feel we have the best pitching in the league," Hutchinson said Thursday while resting in between rounds in the Balmia Celia 18-hole invitational baseball golf tournament. "Cleveland may have the best big three in Lemon, Garcia, Wynn, and New York has three fine pitchers in Reynolds, Ruschi and Lopat. But I don't think either club has the overall pitching strength that we possess."
"Show me a club that is as deep in pitching as we are. We have six starting pitchers, Art Houtteman, Ned Garver, Ted Gray, Hal Newhouser, Bill Wight and young Billy Hoeft. Houtteman, in my opinion, has the brightest future of any pitcher in the league, despite his unfortunate season last year. He's got all the tools. There isn't a club in the league that doesn't want him. Ned Garver is completely recovered from his sore arm. Newhouser has assured me he is in the best shape he's been in several years and has had no pain in his left shoulder all winter. Hoeft will be a great pitcher some day. He is only 20 years old."
Newcomers
Hutchinson also lauded newcomers Hal Erickson, who hurled 20 victories for Dallas last year; Milt Jordan a relief expert from Buffalo; and Dick Marlowe, author of a no-run, no-hit game with the Bisons. He expected the staff to be helped still more with the return of Ray Herbert from the service in July. Herbert won five games in about a month for Detroit before reporting to the army early in 1951.

Mentor of Tiny Kansas School to Coach at SMU
DALLAS (P)—Southern Methodist university Thursday picked Chaimer E. Woodard of tiny Mepherson college in Kansas to pull its football fortunes from strife-ridden depths.
Woodard, 36, who built a great record coaching high school and college teams, was named head coach to succeed H. N. Rusty Russell, who resigned Feb. 1 under pressure of the alumni.
The man Athletic Director Matty Bell recommended as "one of the outstanding young coaches in the country—qualified for a big job" was given a three-year contract by the faculty committee on athletics. His salary will be the same as Russell's, an estimated $12,000 a year.
Russell quit with the statement that he couldn't coach the football team and answer criticism too. He was paid off on the three years remaining on his contract, the amount being estimated at $36,000. Russell's three year record as head coach was 12 victories, 16 defeats, and two ties. His highest finish in the southwest conference was third place last fall.

Decorated Seen Betting Favorite
To Win $100,000 Santa Anita Derby
ARCADIA UP—Decorated California owned, Kentucky bred colt, probably will be the betting favorite to win the $100,000 Santa Anita derby, but the "bet Calumet" faction will be in strong evidence.
Supporters of the famed Calumet tarm will rely on Chanlea, a dark bay son of Bull Lea. This confidence will be asked primarily on the fact that the Calumet board of strategy, father Ben and son Jimmy Jones, is a tough one to beat when the blue chips are at stake.
Sound Grounds
The boom for Decorated, a $4-200 bargain basement buy by Andrew J. Crevolin, automobile dealer of nearby Alhambra, is predicated on sound grounds, however.
Twice Decorated has met the Calumet colt, and twice—in stake engagements—he has taken the measure of Chanlea.
Alfred G. Vanderbilt, who has never won one of Santa Anita's $100,000 purses, may have a threat in Social Outcast, who will pinch-hit for the stable's great colt, Native Dancer.
The Dancer is pointing toward turfdom's triple crown this year, leading off with the Kentucky derby. But Social Outcast, a Shut-out offspring, might well run back to the good form he showed as a 2-year-old.

Ballman’s TVers Meet Pepperdine Cagers Tonight
Ballman’s Tvers will meet the Pepperdine JVes tonight at the Pepperdine gym at 6 o'clock. The game will be played as the preliminary to the Pepperdine varsity game.
The Tvers will have at their disposal three former "Wave" alumni when Capt. Bill Walker, Marshall Styll and Chuck Gibbon take the floor.
The locals will be without the services of some of their talent as it will be impossible for all to get off work in time to travel to Los Angeles for the game. Those who will be there will be Dick Berg, Roger Pannier, Joe Bruce, Jerry Philip and Jim Wright.
"Windy" Range and Ira Webber will not be available.
Earlier in the season the Tvers lost a close 73-70 decision to the Wave varsity and if at full strength should have little difficulty with the spirited JV five. Incidently it was these same JVers who were responsible for the only loss of the USC fosh this year.

Agers Agreement set for June 9th
SAN FRANCISCO (P) — Sid Flaherty, manager of the leading American middleweight contender, Carl Bobo Olson, said Thursday he still held hopes a title match with former world champion Randy Turpin would be arranged for London, June 9.
The pilot of the Honolulu-born boxer based his belief on word received through London promoter Jack Solomons that he would telephone Flaherty here Saturday morning.
"The fact that I have been advised to stand by my telephone for a call from Solomons indicates to me there is still a chance the Turpin match will be made." Flaherty said. "I already have agreed with Solomons on terms which include that the winner of the Turpin-Olson fight will be recognized as the world champion. The California State Athletic commission already has agreed to make this recognition."
