Gazette SPORTS Kiner-Rickey to Go to Mat on Salary Issue HOLYWOOD (P)—Pittsburgh's home run slugger Ralph Kiner goes to bat tomorrow against the salary pitching of baseball's mahats, Branch Rickey. They've scheduled a meeting at 3 p.m. to talk money matters. Earlier this year Rickey sent his son, Branch, Jr., sometimes known as the Twig, out to talk with Kiner. At that time Ralph said he'd take a cut in his $90,000 salary of 1952, but believed a proposed 25 per cent slash was just too much. That 25 per cent would be the maximum reduction allowed under baseball rules and would put his paycheck for 1953 work somewhere in the $67,500 neighborhood. While there's been a lull in salary discussions, Rickey has talked trade with several major league clubs, but to date nothing concrete has resulted. "Some other clubs are trying to get Elm;" Rickey admits and then explains why there's been no deal. "Weed trade Ralph only if the Pirate would be helped by the addition of other players." So far the others have balked against giving up several young players in trade for the 30-year-old home run-hitter. Perhaps an agreement on a 1953 salary would help matters in the trading mart. After talking with the Twig, Kiner said he believed he and Richelle were going to go to Mat on Salary Issue. Davey Says Gavilan Gave 'Real College Education' BY JERRY LISKA CHICAGO (P)—"I got my real college education last night." Thus Thursday spoke the holder of a master's degree, Chuck Davey, who ruefully learned from Kid Gavilan, the welterweight champion, there are no scientific substitutes for a wicked sock on the jaw. The brutal lesson at the Chicago stadium disillusioned countless Davey fans but there was some balm for Davey in the check for $40,756.63 which Chuck picked up from the International Boxing Club. Gavilan, now eyeing the middle-weight division and a possible bout in Montreal against Johnny Bratton within six weeks, received $81,513.27 for his 27-minute, 10th round TKO of Davey. The net gate was $211,454.71, from which Gavilan got 40 percent and Davey 20 after ring expenses and city tax. Disappointed Davey was keenly disappointed in his failure to stand up under the flailing blows of the Cuban, but declared, "I learned an awful lot." "I think I can fight my way back up to the top," he said. "I'm not quitting. I'll be ready the next time around." Gavilan, himself, said Davey was "very fast and maybe in two-three years, he be a good fighter." Davey will be 28 his next birthday, May 3. Ilan landed 300 blows and Davies 230 in the nine rounds the best lasted. In the eighth, when Gavilan cut open Davey's right-chin and apparently decided to stump his foe away, the Ilan landed 78 times to 34 for Davies. Probably the best word could be said for previously beaten Davey was overheard at a TV-equipped saloon. "You gotta hand it to the guy said an intent-bar-stool view 'the way he kept getting up.'" Gavilan took a late afternoon plane for New York. The Kid's manager, in addition to sidinger the Montreal fight, is talking over an offer to Art Aragon on the West Coast. Davey...feeling chipper deserves the pounding he took Wednesday night, said he would leave Thursday night for Lansing where will attend a testimonial dinner honoring him Feb. 17. After the Chuck and his pretty wife, will visit Naples, Fla., for a cation. Wednesday night's gross of $275,415 from an annou nce crowd of 17,450 was a record a welterweight title bout. Salas to Fight For Mexican Title TIJUANA, Mex. (P) — A round match between Lauro Sa Some other clubs are trying to get him; Rickey admits and then explains why there's been no deal. "Wed trade Ralph only if the Pirate would be helped by the addition of other players." So far the others have balked against giving up several young players in trade for the 30-year-old home run-hitter. Perhaps an agreement on a 1953 salary would help matters in the trading mart. After talking with the Twig, Kifler said he believed he and Rickey could reach an agreement in short order in a personal confab. "We aren't very far apart," he said at his Palm Springs home where he's been doing his heavy hitting on the golf course. NOW—Doorra Open 6:45 P.M. Gavilan, himself, said Davey was "very fast and maybe in two-three years, he be a good fighter." Davey will be 28 his next birthday, May 3. A bout with the winner of the March 13 New York bout between Vince Martinez and Chico Vejar is reported in store for Davey, who twice pummeled Vejar for easy victories. Gavilan, who was held to a draw by Bratton in an overweight match, Nov. 28, 1951, in Chicago, presumably intends to sharpen up against him in Montreal for a crack at either Randy Turpin or Bobo Olson, the middleweight kingpin of the moment. Show Over Davey knew the show was over against Gavilan Wednesday night when he got his best combinations going in the fourth round. He pasted the kid with two whistling blows to the head and two to the stomach. The same series had stopped Rocky Graziano, ex-middleweight champion, in his tracks and ruined Vejar. But nothing happened to Gavilan. He kept boring right in. One statistician estimated Gav- Chuck and his pretty wife, will visit Naples, Fla., for a cation. Has to Fight Mexican Title UANA, Mex. UP — A 12-match between Lauto Salas, has to Fight Mexican Title DiMaggio Says Yanks Due to Win Pennant By RUSS NEWLAND SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Joe DiMaggio picked the New York Yankees to pound home first again in the American League baseball race. The old Yankee Clipper, one year removed from the battle of base hits, also thinks he could make a "comeback" if he wanted to try. "I'm not planning on it," he hastened to add. Joltin Joe was here visiting briefly with his relatives. "This is still my home," he said. DiMaggio planned to return Thursday night to Los Angeles to begin a series of filmed television programs with a baseball background. "I can't see any team beating the Yankees," he said. "They are the best club on paper. It is a wonderfully balanced outfit, with hitting, fielding and running. And it doesn't have to take a back seat in pitching. If Ewell Blackwell's pitching arm is O.K., this could be one of the greatest New York clubs." DiMaggio thinks Cleveland will give the Yankees a run for the flag, in fact sees it as a two-club race. "Cleveland may be a little too erratic in the infield and to tighten up may have to sacrifice some power. I like the way the White Sox are stacking up with their trades but I don't know who will hit in their runs. The White Sox recently acquired first sacker Ferris Fain, league leading hitter the last two seasons, from the Athletics. Moomaw to Play Richman at Mocambo Soon; Film Academy Awards to be Televised By TOM B. DANSON HOLLYWOOD — Harry Richman, one of America's top entertainers, rated as one of the greatest showmen of all time, makes his Mocomabo debut with "Uncle Charlie Morrison starting the 25th of this month. He follows the fabulous Kay. Thompson and the Williams Brothers, who are currently pleasing the sauve and sophisticate at the "Mo." Handsome, debonair, Harry is one of the highest salaried artists in the world and his fame is international. Years ago he made his film debut in the picture, "Puttin' on the Ritz," and numbers from this film have been a must on his nightly night-club routines ever since. Richman is an enthusiastic pilot of his own airplane and is credited with making the first round trip across the Atlantic many years ago with Dick Merrill. "OSCAR" ON TV! For the first time in history, millions of movie fans throughout the nation will be able to look in upon Hollywood's biggest night of the year—the exciting Academy Awards presentation—when the 1952 "Oscars" are distributed Thursday night, March 19. The 25th annual presentation ceremony will be carried over the combined radio and television networks of NBC, it was recently announced by Charles Brackett, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and John K. West, vice president of NBC. The exclusive rights for the radio and television presentation were obtained for $100,000. Format of the ceremony will follow that of previous years, as Davis' parents live in a free area of St. Paul, Minn., and reception is pretty bad. It does take Joan long to rectify however. She sends them 16 prints of each show. Now the tendance for each show has gone so large that the pictures to be run in the school auditorium Papa Davis does not allow a lation of the nation-wide redate, even though he has seen shows in advance. The site of the development at East Center and Evergreen sts was selected, the builders, Hahn-St. John, emphasized, because of the proximity of so many fine community assets. In particular, it was noted, the kitchens were planned, both decoratively and functionally, to meet the demands of housewives who spend a major portion of their time in this key workshop of the home. Priced from $12,481 and available to veterans on new reduced down payments of $481, plus costs and impounds. Norpark Homes offers the beauty, too, of a location nestling among orange groves, with a background of leisurely living, yet close to key employment centers of Orange county. Long Beach and Los Angeles. Nearby are schools, shopping centers, churches, picnic grounds, playgrounds, tennis courts and other rare facilities of Anaheim's celebrated park system. Features reported to be outstanding by viewers were the kitchens, 40 highly varied exterior styles, Lennox central heating plant, gas-fired and thermostat-controlled, wood-burning fireplaces, stall showers, glass-enclosed tubs, television outlets, colored bathroom fixtures and pullman bath cabinets. Four model homes furnished by Aaron Schultz furniture stores are open daily and Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm. The kitchens feature extra-large knotty-pine cabinets, exhaust fans over ranges spacious breakfast nook areas, Waste-King garbage pulverators, and eat-to-clean Hibernosa ceramic tile around work areas. 2 Anaheim Gazette FRIDAY MORNING, FEB. 13, 1956 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA RADIO and TELEVISION FRIDAY A.M. 7:00 A.M.
