Unexpected Success Faces 'Happy Day' Vocalist; Record Sales Mount
By TOM E. DANSON
HOLLYWOOD—With the tremendous sales of the new Lawrence Welk record, "Oh Happy Day," still mounting, and the popularity gaining on the national hit tune rating, the vocalist, Larry Hooper, has suddenly become faced with a success he has never before known. It makes a good success story; too, for Larry didn't want to sing—he's the shy type who doesn't particularly care for the spotlight. It all started in 1948, when Larry joined the Welk or label, "Oh Happy Day" became an immediate hit making Larry Hopper the subject of an army of autograph seekers.
"I've got a new job now," Welk said. "I'm the new delivery boy, carrying papers and pictures from the front of the bandstand to the piano for Larry to autograph!" At this point Hooper demonstrated some more of his shyness by turning his head away so that the blush wouldn't show.
Hooper was born in Lebanon, where he remains there through his Local Firms to Handle Tickets For Scott Concerts.

HOLLYWOOD—With the tremendous sales of the new Lawrence Welk record, "Oh Happy Day," still mounting, and the popularity gaining on the national hit tune rating, the vocalist, Larry Hooper, has suddenly become faced with a success he has never before known. It makes a good success story, too, for Larry didn't want to sing—he's the shy type who doesn't particularly care for the spotlight. It all started in 1948 when Larry joined the Welk organization as piano player, and not too anxious to talk about himself during luncheon at Nick's here, Lawrence Welk had to take over.
"Larry came recommended to me as a piano player only," Lawrence told me, "but during our first interview I sensed a quality in his voice and asked him to sing. Hooper flatly refused. Well," Lawrence continued, "in order to hear his voice, I created a little stunt in the band which had the entire band singing and when it came Larry's turn, he couldn't refuse."
"Later, I shaved the group down to a quartet, then to a trio, later a duet and finally, after three and one-half years, I got him to sing a solo!"
The very first solo recording ever pressed by Larry on the Coral label, "Oh Happy Day" became an immediate hit making Larry Hopper the subject of an army of autograph seekers.
"I've got a new job now," Welk said. "I'm the new delivery boy, carrying papers and pictures from the front of the bandstand to the piano for Larry to autograph!" At this point Hooper demonstrated some more of his shyness by turning his head away so that the blush wouldn't show.
Hooper was born in Lebanon, Mo., remaining there through his grammar and high school days. He started studying the piano when he was 8 years old but finished his piano studies in an advance music course at Louisiana State. His first band business experience came in 1943 when he joined the George Olsen aggregation where he remained for three years before becoming associated with Franke Masters. Lawrence Welk followed in 1948, and it looks like he's here to stay.
There's no question about it. "Oh Happy Day" is giving Larry a good Hooper-rating!

Flowering trees form striking features of many gardens. On many small properties space is at a premium but a flowering tree or two can add much to a garden.
Like many other deciduous plants, the flowering trees are often afflicted with delayed foliation. This difficulty is characterized by slow and incomplete leafing out in spring and poor blossom displays. Cherries and apples are usually most affected, peaches less so. Many times whole branches will never start growth and eventually there is considerable dieback. There is no cure for delayed foliation except breeding of varieties more tolerant of our climate.
Flowering trees prefer deep well drained loamy soil, well fertilized but species vary in their tolerance of unfavorable conditions. It is well to inquire into the needs of each kind considered before purchasing. If bare root trees available now are to be planted a hole should be dug large enough to accommodate the roots without bending them around. While the tree is held upright, soil is poured around the roots and carefully packed in with the fingers—not tamped in with a club which is likely to ruin the roots. After filling the hole, the tree is watered to settle the soil and no more should be needed until after growth begins.
Among the fine flowering trees available to grace our gardens at this time of year besides the well-known peach are the Bechtel's Crab, with masses of lovely shell pink bloom in March or April; the Red Leafed Plum with pink flowers in spring and deep red or bronze foliage giving color most of the year; the fluffy pink Flowering Cherries, and Red Bud, a small picturesque tree that becomes a mass of purple flowers in spring.

PARTY FUN
Are you having fun at your own parties?
Parties are good for you because they are part of a happy life good for you if you have fun that is And you will never know just how much fun you can have unless you do give parties and offen in your own home.
If you are the kind that needs an excuse to give a party, February is loaded with excuses—birthdays of many famous men to celebrate and that most sentimental of all holidays Valentine's day!
But any time is an excellent time to have a party, the best way in the world to let your friends and relations know you love them.
GIVE A PARTY
Give a party to get to-gether friends who like canasta or bridge Give a party for some one who has had bad luck and could stand some ext. a cheer Give a party for the neighbor who is having a baby, or is new in the neighborhood. Lions Get Notes From Tax Expert
It is advisable to find out the tax implications before closing any business deal, Government Income Tax expert Arthur F X Metzger told members of the Lions club and 25 guests, all public accountants, at a luncheon Friday.
Introduced by Roy Mendoza himself an income tax counselor, Metzger stressed the necessity of keeping records for all business transactions.
At the meeting, presided over by President Ray Reafsynder, the Lions voted to approve a "Operation Philippines" plan, adopted two weeks ago by the Lions executive board of this district.
The plan is to send food and clothing to Philippino Communists who want to come out of hiding and settle down on land donated to them by the government.
Come over for coffee is an invitation that is appreciated whether the time is mid-morning, afternoon or early evening. Morning coffees that began with ejectionering for President Eisenhower are catering over into the calm of post-election days because too were fun and such easy ways to entertain.
EASY DOES IT
Which brings us back to main idea of having fun at your own parties. The modern Mass or Mrs does it the easy way knowing party will go more smoothly and the guests have a more enjoyable time when the hostess bus time to relax and enjoy herself too.
This means to approach your party plans with an idea of ton for all. Fortunately information is the keynote in California which gives you leeway to be original. If your household is as maidless as most, you will count on letting your guests help you, and help themselves on taking advantage of mechanical gadgets like the chafing dish or little individual serving tables, and of the wide variety of partly prepared foods available in our markets.
LOOK GLAMOROUS
You are the wife of the party but are you the life of the party? This depends on how well your party plans are laid. House cleaning should be done well in advance of party day, as should a good share of the refreshment preparation. This gives you an opportunity to rest or at least relax on the day of the party, secure in the knowledge that you have had time to do all the things that needed doing.
Glamour depends just as much on frame of mind as on good grooming You have on your most becoming dress, your han is nicely done, your nails are manicured for a change. Forget about the details of your costume and devote yourself to having fun.
