Welterweight Champ Confident He Wll Win CHICAGO (F)—Welterweight champion Kid Gavilan, sporting a trace of a Thursday made with some double-talk over the chances challenger Chuck Dave against him next Wednesday night. Flaherty said he will leave Boston Sunday to meet Solomons, who is returning to England via the United States from an Australian visit. Flaherty, undaware that Solomons would be in this country, earlier said he planned to fly to England next week to open negotiations for the bout. Blackwell Signs With N. Y. Yankees NEW YORK (UP) — Ewell Blackwell, once the most effective right-handed pitcher in the National League, has signed his 1953 baseball contract with the New York Yankees, assistant general manager Roy Hamey announced Thursday. Blackwell was obtained from the Cincinnati Reds last Aug. 28. He became the ninth player to sign with the world champions, who give having trouble getting their athletes in the fold. "It would be an experiment," Miss Chadwick told the Evening Tribune. "After I swim the channel from St. Margaret's on the English coast to Wissant on the French coast, I want to see how far I can return." She swam from France to England in 1950 and in 1951 made it reverse direction, the first woman ever to do so.
