Slates Major Work This Year Plans for the conversion of Orange telephones to dial operation by the end of 1954 and for the changing of telephone numbers this year in Anaheim, Buena Park, Garden Grove and Placentia were announced last night by J. L. Richards, district manager of Pacific Telephone. In an appearance before the telephone committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, Richards presented the telephone company's answers to a list of questions submitted by committee last October. Conversion of the Orange exchange to dial, he said, is a big step toward the establishment of extended service for county telephones. The changing of Anaheim, Buena Park, Garden Grove and Placentia telephone numbers from three and four to seven digits will enable subscribers to dial telephones in their respective extended service areas when the extended service plan is established. Richards said. The number changes are scheduled for completion late this year. Other improvements cited by the district manager include the start of construction next month of a new dial central office building in Costa Mesa and the reduction in general to a maximum of eight parties on suburban service. Equipment rearrangements will permit each party to hear only one ring other than his own, instead of three or four as at present. New Delivery Service to Korea Slated by CARE It is now possible for CARE to make direct delivery of its food and textile packages to designated organizations or institutions in Korea, provided such orders total 10 packages or more. O. G. "Tommy" Thomason, local CARE committee chairman, announced today. The expanded service. Thomason explained, is covered under special regulations issued by the United Nations Civil Assistance Command. This means, he pointed out, that Americans interested in helping a specific orphanage, hospital, school or other operation sponsored by their churches or associations, can assure food and clothing through "Bulk orders" of CARE's $10 and $7 Korean relief parcels. In addition, all CARE offices will continue to accept contributions in any amount to provide undesignated packages for general relief distribution through UNCACK. Delivery of the designated parcels will be handled by Dr. Charles R. Joy, CARE Mission Chief stationed in Pusan, who also acts as observer of the UNCACK distributions. To date, over $1,500,000 worth of CARE parcels have been subscribed for Korean civilian war victims as gifts of the American people. Contributions to CARE may be sent to Thomason at the YMCA.
