STYDAHAR TAKES CARDINAL COACHING JOB—Jumbo Joe Stydahar, former coach of the Los Angeles Rams, basks in the warm sun at his Los Angeles home Jan. 29 with his two sons, Joey, 7 months old, and David, 5, after agreeing to coach the Chicago Cardinals for three years. He'll succeed Joe Kuhharich, fired by the Cards the day before, but the formal contract signing will be deferred until Stydahar goes to Chicago next week. Harrison Leads Tucson Tourney TUCSON, Ariz., Jan. 29 UP—E. J. Dutch Harrison, of Ardmore, Okla., one of the oldest players on the tourney trail, took a one-stroke lead in the $10,000 Tucson open golf tournament Thursday by shooting a six-under par 64. Three of the biggest names in golf and a newcomer were grouped one stroke behind. They were John Palmer, Charlotte, N.C., the Canadian open champ; Jim Turnesa, Briarcliff, N.Y., the reigning PGA champ; Tommy Bolt, Maplewood, N.Y., recent winner of the San Diego open; and Iverson Martin, Maplewood, N.J., who never has won a pro tourney. All had 65s. Forty-four of the field of 135 broke par over the flat and easy 640-yard, par 70 El Rio Golf and Country club layout. Ideal golfing weather with 70 degrees temperature helped knock the scores downward. Five challengers are grouped two strokes back of the leader with 66s. They include Henry Williams, Jr., Reading, Pa., defending Tucson champion, and Chandler Harper, Portsmouth, Va., who won the Tucson event in 1950. The others are John Bulla, Pittsburgh, Pa., Harry Dee, Delwood, N.Y., and Jack Hardin, El Paso, Tex. Lloyd Mangrum, Niles, Ill., pre-tourney favorite, went two over par for a 72. He complained that the grass on the greens was too high. Big Joe Stydahar Signed as Coach Of Chicago Cardinal Grid Club CHICAGO, Jan. 29 UP—Big Joe Stydahar, 40, who directed the Los Angeles Rams to a world pro-football title in 1951. Thursdays was named head coach of the Chicago Cardinals. The Cardinals disclosed at a noon press conference that Stydahar was given a three-year contract to succeed Joe Kuhharich, fired as Cardinal coach Wednesday. Early Announcement Stydahar earlier had announced at Los Angeles that he had accepted the Cardinal post and that sent club officials hustling to back up Jumbo Joe's statement. Walter Wolfner, Cardinal managing director, confirmed Stydahar's appointment, but said a contract will not be signed formally until the 280-pound new coach appears here next Thursday. Wolfner said Stydahar would get a "bigger" salary than Kuhharich, who was paid off a reported $14,000 for the one year left in his two-year contract. Old Pro Stydahar is an old pro, both as a player and a coach. He performed as a brilliant National Football league tackle for the Chicago Bears from 1936 through 1946, and then took over as head coach of the Rams in 1950. The Rams won the NFL division title in 1950 and 1951, and in 1951 defeated the Cleveland Browns, 24-17 to win the world pro crown. In the midst of reported dissention, Stydahar quit the Ram organization early last fall and hooked up as a scout and part-time assistant coach with the Green Bay Packers. Wolfner said Stydahar would have free rein in selecting three, or possibly four assistant coaches. Freedom Light Wins Santa Anita Stake ARCADIA, Jan. 29 UP—Freeedom Light won Thursday's $7500 Classified Allowances at Santa Anita, a six-furlong event run in 1:10 3/5. Jockey Eric Guerin reserved the winner of the pace until the stretch and then sent him up on the outside. From where he wore down Jumbo, the place horse, and won by 2¼ lengths. Martini Bob got the show. The winner paid $5.50. The crowd of 23,000 wagered $1,-740,233 during the day. HITCHCOCK TRADED PHILADELPHIA GP—The Philadelphia Athletics Thursday traded Billy Hitchcock to the Detroit Tigers for another utility infielder. Don Kolloway, in a straight player deal. (UP) — Welterweight Champion Kid Gavilan predicted Thursday he will stop unbeaten Chuck Davey in seven or eight rounds when they meet for the title in Chicago Stadium, Feb. 11. "I do not think it will go 15 rounds," said Gavilan. "If he gets past eight I know I can handle heem any time. If he surprise me I got surprise for heem." The 27-year-old kid from Cuba said he had seen Davey only on television in two fights with Chico Vejar. "This fellow very fast," said Gavilan. "He punch and run. I think if I hit heem one good one he's mine." Gavilan said he would move into the middleweight division if he beats Davey because he thought the heavier class offers "more in- ST. LOUIS c—Fred M. Saigh took a firm stand Thursday against a distress sale of the St. Louis Cardinals and disclosed that the problem of operation of the club for the present would be put up to top baseball officials. Saigh reiterated he intends to sever his relations with baseball now that he had been sentenced to prison for income tax evasion. But he left no doubt he doesn't intend to be pushed around in the sale if he can help it. He has until May 4 to get his business affairs in order. Explanation Asked whether he would continue to handle contract signing of players in the meantime, Saigh explained. The pattern of operation of the Cardinals will be pretty well decided after conferences he plans to hold in New York Friday with Commissioner Ford Frick and National League President Warren Giles. Saigh came down to work as usual Thursday. He had a lot of personal business to handle, he said, before beginning his 15-month prison term meted out. PCL Solons End 1952 in Red SACRAMENTO, Jan. 29 (AP) The Sacramento Solons lost $122,-633 during the 1952 Pacific Coast league baseball season. The red ink report was mailed Thursday to stockholders under the signature of Eddie Mulligan, president. The 1951 net loss was $1310. The 1952 balance sheet included depreciation of $22,906 and net cash loss of $89,726. Liabilities were listed at $276,218. Among them are notes to the Bank of America for $75,000, Coast league for $25,000 and the California Western States Life Insurance Co. $93,713. 'Rookie of Year' Set to Fight for Top Ranking Spot NEW YORK, Jan. 29 (AP) Vince Martinez, boxing's "rookie of the year" in 1952, opens a campaign for a first ten ranking in '53 Friday night when he takes on hard punching but wide open Carmine Flore of Brooklyn at Madison Square Garden. Chaffey Favored To Beat S.A. College Quintet Tangling in their third casabale of the week, Santa Ana college's basketteers travel to Chaffey where they will meet a favored and lofty Chaffey college five tonight at 8. Rated as the league's weak sisters, SAC's quintet scored an upset by romping over Pasadena City college 78-61. The Dons also trounced a visiting Palomar JC squad, 71-48. The Chaffey Panthers are led by two of the league's leading scorers Gene DeYoung, 6-3 center, who has tallied 68 points in five games, and Earl Wilson who has 65 in five outings. SAC's leading scorer is Tim Peralta who has a total of 75 digits in five contests. He is the league's fifth highest scorer. Also possessing a high average is Bob Askew whether he would continue to handle contract signing of players in the meantime. Saigh explained. The pattern of operation of the Cardinals will be pretty well decided after conferences he plans to hold in New York Friday with Commissioner Ford Frick and National League President Warren Giles. Saigh came down to work as usual Thursday. He had a lot of personal business to handle, he said, before beginning his 15-month prison term meted out to him yesterday by U.S. District Judge Roy W. Harper. There was a strange hush about the Cardinal office. Employees came and went but without the usual hustle and bustle. No Talk The dapper, 48-year-old Cardinal owner didn't want to talk much. He met a few old friends, one by one in his plush office. Some were sports writers. He issued a prepared statement, saying he didn't want to get mixed up in any controversial issues. Saigh's decision to sever his baseball connections was voluntary. There is no way I can stay in baseball," he told the court after he had been sentenced to prison and fined $15,000 on two counts of a federal indictment, charging evasion of $19,299 in income taxes in 1947 and 1949. He reiterated Thursday that he meant exactly what he said in court. No Idea Saigh said he hadn't the slightest idea whether he would be able to dispose of his Cardinal holdings before May 4. They include franchises of nine minor league clubs and ball parks in Houston, Tex., Rochester, NY, and Columbus, O. A government attorney estimated Thursday that Saigh owes the government back taxes and interest of $450,000. He explained the reason Saigh wasn't indicted for all of the back taxes was that the criminal status of limitation had run out on much of it but not the overall liability. Jockey Killed as Mount Breaks Leg OLDSMAR, Fla., Jan 29 (AP) Jockey Edward Danhaue, died Thursday a few minutes after his mount broke a leg, fell and rolled over him in the fifth race at Sunshine park. Danhauer was riding White Boots in the six furious race. The accident occurred near the 5th furious pole. The 24-year-old jockey was rushed to Mease hospital at near-rounds," said Gavilan. "If he gets past eight I know I can handle heem any time. If he surprise me I got surprise for heem." S-WORD PUZZLE The Chaffey Panthers are led by two of the league's leading scorers Gene DeYoung, 6-3 center, who has tallied 68 points in five games, and Earl Wilson who has 65 in five outings. SAC's leading scorer is Tim Peralta who has a total of 75 digits in five contests. He is the league's fifth highest scorer. Also possessing a high average is Bob Youlett who has hit for 64 in five encounters. Survey on Video 'Damage' Asked By Baseball Group NEW YORK, Jan 29 (P) Baseball's major-minor league TV committee met long enough Thursday to recommend the hiring of a firm to make a survey of what inquiry, if any, the televising of major league games was doing to minor league attendances. "We have to get some facts." explained "Frank Shaughnessy," of the International league. Shaughnessy said the firm would report to his committee in time for that group to study the findings and make a report to the major league owners at the annual all-star game in Boston on July 14.
