Disputed Graham-Gilbert Is Subject Of Records May Fall As Washington Huskies Blaze Through NEW YORK (UP)—An assistant attorney general said Wednesday an investigation is being conducted to determine if there was any corruption or fraud in the recent controversial bout between welterweight contender Billy Graham and Joey Giardello, a ranking middleweight. As a result of Asst. Atty. Gen. Samuel Hirschowitz' statement, Supreme Court Justice Bernard Botelin reserved decision on Giardello's motion to compel the State Athletic Commission to declare him the winner of the 10-round bout with Graham in Madison Square Garden, Dec. 19. Reversed Decision Giardello, of Philadelphia, was first announced as winner of the bout by a two to one decision. But 20 minutes after the verdict was rendered Chairman Bob Christenberry and Commissioner Dr. C. B. Powell of the SAC changed the card of Judge Joe Agnello and declared Graham the victor by a two to one vote. "The commission acted arbitrarily, capriciously and without power," contended J Norman Lewis, Giardello's attorney. Hirschowitz said Christenberry inspected the cards of all three ring officials and said that Agnello had not complied with the rules of the commission in scoring two of the rounds. Grossly Unfair "Consequently," the state lawyer said, "a result occurred so grossly unfair as it amount to a LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28. (UP) A half dozen individual and team records are threatened by the Washington Huskies, far ahead of the pack in the Pacific coast conference northern division basketball race. Half way through its conference season and undefeated in division play, Washington boasts the top scorer in center Bob Houbregs who has scored 227 points at an average of 28.4 in eight games. At the present pace he should crack the record of 265 points held by Jack Nichols of the 1948 Washington team. Second Scorer Second in scoring is Oregon's Chet Noe, who is hitting at 17.3, an average that would top Nichols' mark, according to PCC statistics released Wednesday. Houbregs is hitting 50 per cent of his field goal attempts, well above the 1951 record of 46.7 set by Ladon Henson of Washington. As a team Washington, ranked number three in the national Associated Press poll, is shooting 39.6 per cent from the floor and 73.3 from the free throw line. Both are better than existing division records. The Huskies have scored 593 points. Oil Capitol Wins Palm Beach Race MIAMI (UP) — Oil Capitol, which hadn’t won a race since September, came streaking up on the outside to catch the favored Battlefield at the wire and win the $15,000 added Palm Beach Handicap at Hialeah Park Wednesday. The midweek crowd of 19,759—four less than the corresponding day of last season—made Battlefield the choice at $2.10 to $1, but Oil Capitol took the decision by a neck Nible Fox was third. Oil Capitol ran the seven fur-longs in 1.24 2-5 over a fast track. He paid $49.50, $19.90 and $11.80 in the $2 mutuels. Battlefield returned $4.90 and $3.50, and Nimble Fox $3.80. Cuban Knocks Out Rawlings of Chi CHICAGO (UP) — Orlando Zulueta, sixth-ranked lightweight from Cuba, scored a fifth round technical knockout over Chicago’s Rawlings, who suffered a gashed left eyebrow in the fourth of a scheduled 10-round feature at the Chicago stadium Wednesday night. Zulueta’s whistling two-fisted attack had him in front when a physical examination prevented Rawlings from coming out for the fifth round. Zulueta weighed 135½ and Rawlings, after streaming out all afternoon, 140½. Rawlings weighed 143½ at the noon weigh-in and was given four hours to whittle down to 140. VMI’S Athletic Director Resigns LEXINGTON, Va. (UP) — Virginia Military Institute today announced the resignation of its athletic director and football coach. Tom Nugent and the appointment of John McKenna, line coach, to succeed him. Simultaneously, Florida State University announced it had signed the 39-year-old Nugent to be head football coach at a salary of $8000. He has been getting $7500 for his dual job at VMI. Both appointments are effective Feb. 1. VMI left unfilled the post of athletic director. Nor did it announce what salary would be paid McKenna, who is 36 and a lifelong friend and associate of Nugent, both hailing from Lawrence, Mass.
