Ex-Marine Named ‘Most Courageous’ Athlete by Phillie Sportswriters
PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 26 (UP)—Eddie Le Baron, 23-year-old ex-marine who made an amazing football comeback after suffering serious injuries in the Korean War, was named the most courageous athlete of 1952 by Philadelphia sportswriters tonight.
The 168-pound quarterback for the Washington Redskins of the National Football League won the coveted award at the sportswriters' 49th annual banquet.
Also honored were Bobby Shantz, the Philadelphia Athletics pint-sized pitcher, as the outstanding athlete of the year, and Donn Moomaw of UCLA as the lineman of the year.
1100 Present More than 1100 writers and sports notables were on hand for the presentations.
Le Baron, a Lodi, Calif., youth who played for the College of the Pacific in his undergraduate days, suffered right leg and shoulder wounds while serving as a marine lieutenant, near Yangu, Korea, in the summer of 1951.
The injuries all but spelled doom for his football career. In fact, Le Baron planned for a while to give up football and make a career out of the Marine Corps.
But the 5-foot-9 quarterback changed his mind, practiced endlessly to alleviate the stiffness and pain in his throwing arm, and won new plaudits with the Redskins this fall.
Climax Performance
His climax performance came when the Redskins shoved the Philadelphia Eagles out of a tie for the American Conference title in the final game of the season. Le Baron scored the winning touchdown and passed for another.
Eddie won Little All-America honors three years in a row at COP. The school suffered only two defeats during those three years.
He was the most valuable player in the 1950 East-West Shrine Game in San Francisco and won the Pop Warner Trophy, awarded annually to a West Coast player.
Moomaw, who played his last season this fall, also was selected.

Mangrum Captures Phoenix Open for Third Tourney Victory of Season
PHOENIX, Ariz., Jan. 26 (AP) — Lloyd Mangrum captured his third out of the five tournaments in the 1953 winter trail today when he cracked out a conservative 1-der par 70 for a 72-hole score of 272 in the $10,000 Phoenix Open.
Calling his shots, as well as the score of his final round, the 38-year-old master for Niles, Ill., and Los Angeles cut down whatever hopes his nearest rivals had with his performance over the par 36-35—71, 6578-yard Phoenix Country club course.
Mangrum, in scoring his second straight triumph in the Phoenix event, confided before the round that he would probably shoot a 70, and that a 70 would do the trick.
Scores
He proceeded to tour the course in 35-35—70 to win the $2000 top money with scores of 71-68-63–70.
Bo Wininger, Oklahoma City, Mangrum's nearest rival, four shots back this morning, put up a gallant fight until the pressure struck.
But Mangrum continued his cool play and Wininger began to blow. The 30-year-old former amateur star wound up in a tie with Johnny Bulla, Pittsburgh, and Ted Kroll, New Hartford, N. Y., at 278.
Wininger, after a 34 going out, went a stroke over par on four holes on the back side. He had a 72. Bulla and Kroll shot 66s.

49ers Break off Sale Negotiations
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 26 (P)—Negotiations with a Cleveland syndicate for purchase of the San Fransisco 49ers pro football club were broken off today by Anthony J. Morabito, co-owner of the 49ers.
He wired the Cleveland group that "The 49ers are no longer interested in continuing negotiations under any circumstances."
His wire was addressed to Nate Dolin, vice president of the Cleveland Indians' baseball team, and one of the three agents who came to San Francisco last week as potential buyers.
He gave no hint of a reason for breaking off relations which he said had been "one of the most attractive offers the 49ers had received since the franchise was put up for sale in mid-December."
Morabito's asking price is believed to be at least $400,000...
