HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago January 1878 The Los Angeles Star pays the following compliment to a fellow newspaper man: "And now Mr. George Washington Barter, a former ordinary newspaper writer of this city and an accomplished "masher" of feminine hearts, and an accomplished dead beat in every sense of the word is to be married to an Oakland heirress in a few weeks. The lady is young, beautiful and accomplished and the possessor of a quarter million dollars. Some two years ago, when a mere girl, she got "stuck" after G. Washington B., but her parents sent her off to Europe so that the flame kindled in her susceptible buzzum might be quenched. But it didn't quench worth a fig. Her father, in the meantime, generously died, and she, at once returned, and may now be seen driving her gold mounted phaeton down Broadway. Oakland, daily with George W. B., by her side. Well, we must all live and learn. The lady is younger then Barter's oldest daughter." 25 Years Ago January 1928 The editor is in receipt of a letter from Miss Portia A. Riley of Los Angeles. Miss Riley is preparing to write a thesis at the University of Southern California on the history of the ranch now known as the Irvine ranch, and will visit here shortly to gather facts concerning the early history of this section many of which may be found in the early issues of the Gazette. Miss Riley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. V. Riley. Mrs. Riley was formerly Miss Portia Cowan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. De Witt C. Cowan, pioneer residents who lived on West street, near the corner of Sycamore, a short distance west of Mrs. Frohling's residence referred to in another column. Mr. Riley was formerly county school superintendent of Los Angeles county. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. It appearing that a verified Petition has been filed in the above entitled 50 Years Ago January 1903 A meeting of property owners on Broadway was held at the city hall on Friday evening for the purpose of discussing the advisability of constructing a cement sidewalk on Broadway from Olive street to Clementine. It was agreed that a cement sidewalk should be constructed on the south side of the street. Property owners on the north side not being ready for the improvement. J. B. Rae presided and H. A. McWilliams acted as secretary. Pending negotiations relative to laying cement walks upon both sides of the street, the meeting adjourned to the call of the chair. The enterprising residents of Broadway are resolved to make HILGENFELD MORTUARY Faithful Courteous Service 120 E. Broadway, Anaheim PHONE 4105 MONDAY A.M. 7:00 A.M.
