BUY OR SELL Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Do all the good you can, To all the people you can In all the ways you can, As long as you can. —Inscription on tombstone in Shrewsbury, England. INSPIRATIONAL—The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?—Psa. 27:1-6. SPRING—Officially, it's winter, but Mother Nature is awakening and the hills and countryside is green again. It will be sometime before the wildflowers burst into bloom. It's that time of the year when Anaheimers are getting anxious to get busy. The lawn needs cutting and the shrubs need trimming and weeds in the back yard can be taken care of nicely, too, by applying a little commercial weed-killer. By doing it now, it is possible to cut down the work later on when it is required to get rid of noxious growths. A little weed killer applied now will save the hoe and back later. SIDELIGHTS — Herman Schacht, the hard working telephone man, who claims to be a shirt-tail relative of Hilmar Schacht, the international financial wizard, can tell you that pay phones take quite a beating. Seems like the coin boxes are "slugged" to death. Petty robbers often try Viet-Minh Forces Capture Strong Viet-Nam Post SAIGON, Indochina, Jan. 21 (AP)—Strong Vietminh forces captured a strategic outpost today in what appears to be the start of an all-out assault on the French fortress town of Ankhe, 250 miles northeast of Saigon. The Deomong outpost, which guards a mountain pass nine miles east of Ankhe, fell to the communist-led rebels at dawn, with heavy losses to pro-French Vietnamese defenders. Its capture opens a route over which the Vietminh can bring reinforcements and supplies for the build-up against Ankhe. The rebels are reported to have seven battalions available now. With control of coastal communications the prize, the French high command has ordered fresh troops to Ankhe, where a strong defense system of trenches is being built. Fighter-bombers also are being thrown into the fighting. Fifteen planes from the French aircraft carrier Arromanches took to the air to bombard the attackers just as Deomong fell. It is at least the fourth French Union outpost to yield since the Vietminh began applying pressure eight days ago against Ankhe, a coffee, tea and rubber center lying 40 miles inland from the China Sea. Plucky Teller Employment Help Wanted—Male BOYS MORNING PAPER Earn Extra you want, w first step in SEE DO CIRCULAT ANAHEI Belated Flood Report HONG KONG (CP)—The Chinese Communist news agency belates announced recently that a storm on Sept. 24 hit the Central Yunnan area, flooding 40,000 acres, lapsing 28 dams and affecting 100,000 persons. The report raised speculation here because this is the vulnerability mid-Yangtse-Tungting L region where the Chinese F claimed they had eliminated danger by an elaborate system dikes, dams and impound basins. SIDELIGHTS — Herman Schacht, the hard working telephone man, who claims to be a shirt-tail relative of Hilmar Schacht, the international financial wizard, can tell you that pay phones take quite a beating. Seems like the coin boxes are "slugged" to death. Petty robbers often pry the instruments from the booths to get a few nickels and dimes. In most cases the "take" isn't worth the effort. Crime doesn't pay... They say that 16 per cent of the cigarettes sold are by vending machine. These too have been taking a beating from slugs. Seems like some folks take advantage of the gadgets developed for their convenience... Which reminds one that everyone seems to want to get something for nothing. An Anaheim druggist used to check his weight daily on a scale in front of his place. Instead of placing a penny in the slot, he tripped the mechanism with a wire he kept for the purpose. TODAY—This is a big day in Buena Park. Voters are going to the polls to decide whether or not the gateway city to Orange county should incorporate... Paul Kroesen, Buena Park chamber of commerce proxy, has been pushing the incorporation. Twenty-five years ago San Clemente voted to incorporate, 104-0... About 400 names were pruned from the eligible Buena Park voting list. The voters disintranchised themselves by failing to use the rubber stamp in the general election... Richard Nixon becomes vice president today. His elevation to that post made it possible for Anaheim's Tommy Kuchel to become the junior senator from California by virtue of Gov. Earl Warren's appointment... Two countians are ruling in the parade. Several in the armed services are marching in it. BRIEFLY — Frank Belmont, the stormy petrel of the citrus industry, is in the news again. He being sued for $10,000... Attorney James Monroe and George Culner are making a last ditch effort to save Henry Ford McCracken from San Quentin's gas chamber. Their time is short. The slayer of the little Buena Park school girl, Patty Jean Hull, is slated for his appointment with destiny Friday... The Citrus Growers, Inc., the organization which provides help for 38 packing organizations in the county, relected its directors. Ed Backs, Anaheim insurance man and member of a pioneer family, is president of the group, George Culner. Plucky Teller Foils Bandit PASADENA, Jan. 21 (AP)—A nervy blonde teller today defied a would-be bank holdup man whom she described as "rugged, and about 6 feet, 4 inches tall." The big fellow appeared at the window where Miss Eleanor Ramish, 23, was working in a branch of the Bank of America. He handed her a note demanding all the cash at hand, and displayed a pistol. "That gun doesn't look real to me," she told him. "It's real enough," he said. "I still don't believe it's real," she persisted. Then, she told reporters: "All of a sudden the floor gave way an dI went down behind the counter." Still retaining her presence of mind, she called to the chief teller, whereupon the thwarted hole-up man ran out and escaped in an automobile. State's Foreign-Born Declining LOS ANGELES, Jan. 21 (AP)—The percentage of foreign born in California's population has been steadily declining in the past 70 years. This is disclosed in figures released today by the U.S. Census Bureau: Of the state's 10,586,223 population in 1950, there were 985,333 of foreign birth, representing one in 10.7 persons. In 1930 there were 1,001,380 foreign born in a total population of 5,677,251, or one person in 5.6. In 1880, there were 292,874 foreign born in a population of 864,694, or one in 2.9 of the population. In 1950, natives of Mexico numbered 16.5 per cent of the California foreign born. Canadians were second—totaling 11.2 per cent of the foreign born. Italians represented 10.6 per cent, persons from Britain and Wales 8 per cent, Germans 7.2 per cent and Russians 6.8. Miner, Cow Moose Die in Lonely HONG KONG (AP)—The Chinese Communist news agency belated announced recently that a stunt on Sept. 24 hit the Central Yunnan area, flooding 40,000 acres, lapsing 28 dams and affecting 100,000 persons. The report raised speculation here because this is the vulnerability mid-Yangtse-Tungting L region where the Chinese People claimed they had eliminated fire danger by an elaborate system dikes, dams and impound basins. When the Reds announced completion of the project last spring engineers here said the type flood-control job described would require up to five years to complete. The Reds said they did three months, using "improved Russian methods." A high proportion of the area of Scotland is still deer resting, says the National Geographic Society. His figure, we are incline to believe, is on the conservative side. Robert Borden will be a good man to see that Anaheim gets flood control. It's about time that the Carbon canyon flood control dam is built. It's been projected for a decade. Anaheimers will soon realize the need for a gymnasium with a seating capacity for basketball fans. Feb. 6, 1953) LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SHAREHOLDERS NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual Meeting of the Shareholders of The Savings. Loan and Building Association of Anaheim, A California Corporation, will be held at the principal office for the transaction of the business of the said Corporation, located at 211 East Center Street, in the City of Anaheim, California, on Monday, February 9th, 1953 at 7:30 p.m. of said day for the purpose of electing Directors of said Corporation for the ending year and for the purpose of transacting any and all other business which may properly come before said meeting. Lated: January 22nd, 1958 The Savings. Loan and Building Association of Anaheim. By: EIMER E BRUCE, Secretary. MINER, Cow Moose Die in Lonely Alaskan Struggle FAIRBANKS, Alaska, Jan. 21 (P)—A 70-year-old miner and a cow moose were found dead near each other today on a lonely trail, apparently victims of a bitter wilderness battle. A half-wild team of Malemute dogs owned by the miner, Lawrence Magnusia, crouched in the snow nearby. They paid little attention to their dead master but had been feeding on the moose carcass and growled menacingly when police tried to approach the dead animal. As U.S. Commissioner Ladessa Nordale reconstructed the tragedy: Magnusia lived alone in a one-room cabin near the deserted mining settlement of Olnes, 15 miles north of here. He apparently shot the moose at close range. The dying animal attacked him. But the old miner clubbed it with his empty rifle, breaking the stock in half. Then he died himself, either from wounds inflicted by the moose or from a heart attack from his exertions.
