BUY OR SELL-- Get FAST RESULTS! IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago January 1878 It is with great regret that we chronicle the death of the wife of Frederick Conrad, which occurred last evening. The deceased lady had been suffering for some time past but her death was scarcely anticipated. The sympathy of the community is with the bereaved husband. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. 50 Years Ago January 1903 We were shown today some Italian chestnuts grown by Mr. R. Luedke. He has, we believe, the only bearing tree in Anaheim. The fruit is of immense size and of good appearance. We should think the tree would be a profitable one to cultivate. 25 Years Ago January 1928 The Orange county Board of Supervisors will be urged to appoint J. J. Dwyer of Anaheim to represent the agricultural interests on the county flood control board, which is now being organized. It was announced at Santa Ana, following Friday's meeting of the Orange county Farm Bureau, at which Dwyer was named for the position. The supervisors recently appointed five members to the board. Water is essential for all life processes. NEUBAUER "They are fools who kiss and tell" Wisely has the poet sung. Man may hold all sorts of posts. If he'll only hold his tongue. TODAY'S THOT—Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil — Matt. 6.13. STRICTLY PERSONAL—A job begun is a job half done! Those words ring true. Getting started is often harder than doing the job that is to be done Some undertaking that seems so difficult, is nothing more than a challenge of TODAY'S THOT—Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil —Matt. 6:13. STRICTLY PERSONAL—A job begun is a job half done! Those words ring true. Getting started is often harder than doing the job that is to be done. Some undertaking that seems so difficult, is nothing more than a challenge of one's initiative. When begun, a job seems to become interesting because in the doing it becomes an accomplishment — something of which we can be proud. The simplest task may seem difficult before it is undertaken. The most difficult undertaking seems easily done after completion. If you have something to do, do it. It is only the beginning that is difficult—a job has a way of getting done after it is once started. SIDELINES — Ray Thompson was a member of the great Brea-Olinda football team. He was a consistent booster getting 70 yards or so per punt. Good as he was, he wasn't equal to Bert Kidd on his good days. The Anaheim used to boot the length of the field... Wonder where Brea's Joe Gudmundsson would fit into the picture with men like Bert Rightmer, Ed Zerbe and Charles (Rusty) Ledbetter ... That red-headed Ledbetter was one of the greatest high school footballers ever developed. He wanted to play for USC. His father wanted him to play for Stanford. And another potential all-American's grid career fizzled. REMEMBER—It wasn't so long ago that Rusty Roquet was known for his flaming red hair. It's hair today, gone tomorrow... Bill Harmuth, the Fullerton praise agent, keeps tabs on statistics. He figures that more Anaheimers are born in Fullerton than anywhere else. Remember when it was the other way around?... Kelly Hester still shudders when he recalls how he was "beaned" in a ball game two years ago... John Hein and Bill Shigekawa are among Anaheim's wisest They're Phi Beta Kappa. Remember the supervisors considered a signal for the corner of 101 and Placentia avenue. It's still under consideration. It was figured that the Municipal court setup would save the taxpayers $40,000 annually, but it made a lot of work for Judge John Shea. NUGGETS—Bill Selfridge, the consulting electrical engineer, was head of a war-time educational program that turned out marine electricians "Y'know, it's surprising how many of these men are still following the trade A lot of them are contracting." Walt Gooden is an Anaheim who is sold on Anaheim because he sells Anaheim (real estate). Arch Baker on the other hand peddles a vital necessity—water (softeners). Tommy Thomason is really doing an outstanding job on behalf of Anaheim youth. Walter Stankey is typical of Anaheim truck drivers. He'll risk his own neck to keep from having a wreck. It is because of men like him that the Anaheim trucking firms have an enviable reputation. TRIFLES—Wonder how Don Deer is coming with his civilian defense job. He was supposed to organize the block wardens. Why is it you don't hear much about civilian defense these days except for aircraft spotters? Judge Raymond Thompson can be seen cruising about the northern end of the county in a hossless carriage. The other day his ancient touring-was seen towing an even more ancient red Maxwell Daniel Allee likes those ancient chariots, too. He is a mechanic and can keep 'em going. Ain't heard tell what the Anaheim land baron, Charles Ruby, is doing of late. The collector of collectors keeps on adding to his collections. He has stamps, money, flags, pictures and stuff like that there, but his collection of Anaheim real estate is his foremost hobby. AFTERTHOT—There ain't no such thing as a small taxpayer nowadays.
