Oakland Police Investigators Held In Missing Cafe Strongbox Puzzle
OAKLAND, Jan. 15 (UP)—The strange case of the missing strong box caused suspension of two Oakland police officers today, pending investigation of a cafe burglary.
The men—Rex Smith, 31, Oakland, and John W. Marenger, 33, Hayward—are members of the crime technicians detail.
They were specially trained to take measurements and obtain other data at the scenes of crimes.
• Deny Guilt
Police Chief Lester J Divine said no charges had been placed against the officers, who denied any wrongdoing. But he said their reactions to a lie detector test were "unfavorable" when they were questioned about the missing strongbox.
The box was taken from the Pup cafe at 8101 MacArthur blvd. early last Saturday.
A cafe employee, Harvey Phenning, 59, who lives in an adjoining building, told police he was awakened at 4:45 a.m. by a car on a gravel driveway.
He said he observed two men wearing policemen's uniforms get out of a police car and enter the cafe, later emerging with the strongbox. He said they put it into the car and drove away.
Phenning said he dressed and went to the cafe to investigate and found the strongbox was gone. While he was there, he said the same two policemen came and asked him.
"What's going on?"
Phenning explained what he had seen, but did not state he believed the two marauders were police officers.
Nervous During Test
Chief Divine said Smith and Marenger said they were "nervous" during the lie detector test. But he said they declined to take another test, still pleading nervousness.
Divine turned his information over to Laurence Datyon for pos-
