Oakland Police Investigators Held In Missing Cafe Strongbox Puzzle OAKLAND, Jan. 15 (UP)—The strange case of the missing strong box caused suspension of two Oakland police officers today, pending investigation of a cafe burglary. The men—Rex Smith, 31, Oakland, and John W. Marenger, 33, Hayward—are members of the crime technicians detail. Phenning said he dressed and went to the cafe to investigate and found the strongbox was gone. While he was there, he said the same two policemen came and asked him. "What's going on?" Phenning explained what he had seen, but did not state he believed the two marauders were police officers. Nervous During Test Chief Divine said Smith and Marenger said they were "nervous" during the lie detector test. But he said they declined to take another test, still pleading nervousness.
