Coaches Divided On New Free Sub Rule By HUGH FULLERTON, JR. NEW YORK, Jan. 15 (P)—The return of college football to the pre-platoon era of 1941 doesn't mean that the colleges which dropped football because of rising costs will start playing again. Nor does it mean that the smaller schools, the ones that were supposed benefit by yesterday's NCAA rules committee action to outlaw platoon substitutions, are unanimously pleased. A cross section of small-college coaches' opinion showed almost a 50-50 division. In the past three years 50 small colleges, including some with large enrollments but small time" teams, have abandoned intercollegiate football. Others have been reported the verge of dropping it, citing the huge costs of maintaining a big squad. Moomaw Likes New NCAA Rule LOS ANGELES, Jan. 15 (P)—UCLA's Donn Moomaw, the P's collegiate lineman of the war for 1952, stands 100 per cent behind the new football institution rule. "I think the change is tremendous, wonderful," he said when asked his personal reason to the NCAA banning the two-platoon system. "I believe you'll see a lot bet-college players as a result. Whaps not better games but better players. I would have it this way. The fellows" The first reaction from the better-known colleges which have quit the sport recently was along the lines of comment from the Rev. Wilfred H. Crowley, athletic board chairman of Santa Clara: "Too Late" "It would have helped, but it came too late." This opinion was echoed by the University of San Francisco, St. Mary's, California, St Bonaventure, St. Louis University and some small colleges which never had big-time aspirations. Comments from coaches and athletic leaders showed their belief that the action, by reducing the size of squads and the expenses, might keep other small schools from dropping football. At Fordham, where a survey is under way to determine the advisability of continuing football at a financial loss, Jack Coffey, athletic director, said he didn't know whether the change might influence the decision of the university administrators, but added Neyland Is Happy over NCAA Ruling KNOXVILLE, Jan. 15 (P)—Gen Bob Neyland long has been in the forefront of the fight to kill football's two-platoon system. The veteran Tennessee coach was a member of the NCAA football rules committee which voted unanimously yesterday at St. Petersburg, Fla., to abolish the free substitution rule. Neyland, who is recovering from an illness at his Sarasota, Fla., home, called the two-platoon system "rat-race football." He first expressed his opposition. ALL-AMERICAN Moomaw, a senior 222-pound who towers 6-feet-4, won America honors as a linebacker. But he would have to play more as center on defense as well. I played perhaps 10 minutes game as center and regularly a linebacker," he explained. Like to have played both days if it was both ways for us." Donn doesn't figure he's a German who could play 60 minutes every game under the two-platoon system. Perhaps one of his opponents disagree. The new rule may not give many boys a chance to play that wouldn't be good. Moomaw added, "But on the other hand I think more schools play football since it won't so expensive.
