Anaheim Gazette FRIDAY MORNING, JAN. 9, 1953 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Dutch Freighter Sinks; Vessel Rescues 233 DURBAN, South Africa, Jan. 8 (AP)—The 10,555-ton Dutch liner Klipfontein struck a "submerged object" and sank in the Indian Ocean off the East African coast today, reports reaching here said. The 18,400-ton Blomfontein Castle, a British vessel, rescued the 114 passengers and crew of 119. The disaster occurred 100 miles north of Lourenco Marques, Mozambique. The Klipfontein, carrying a cargo of manganese in addition to the passengers, went down in 45 minutes, reports from Mozambique said. Reports from Johannesburg said an oil tank exploded in the Klipfontein's bow after she struck the submerged object. The stricken vessel settled slowly, the reports said, giving the passengers and crewmen ample time to board lifeboats. The surface waters of the Persian Gulf sometimes reach a temperature of 96 degrees Fahrenheit. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. THE WORD—Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world—John 1:29 WEATHER—Think this winter is wetter than last? How much more rain do you think has fallen this year compared with the rainfall figure for this year? Would you hazard a guess? Is it more? As much? Or less? Most of us talk a lot about the weather, but few of us know very much about it. Most folks guess—and most guesses are exaggerations one way or the other. Just for the fun of it, scan the most convenient rain table and see if you were right...or wrong...or just surprised.
