IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette
By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL

January 1878
A. C. Bowers has been acting as postmaster in Orange, during the absence of N. D. Harwood.
The Orange Literary society met at the residence of George J. Mosbaugh on Saturday evening. The program was excellent, Mr. and Mrs. Rice treated the society to some delightful vocal and instrumental music. There were also some very good readings and recitations. They will meet again in two weeks at the home of Mr. Blasdales one mile east of town.
The "Stella" social club of Santa Ana will give their first ball early next month. It will be a very select affair and arrangements will be on an extensive scale.
The following freight was shipped from the depot this morning: 1 box raisins, 1 plow, 43 bales of wool, 1 coop chickens, 3 boxes butter, 2 sks potatoes, 1 chest tools, 3 kegs wine, 17 bales wool, 6 kegs beer, 15 pipes wine.
Bishop Klip, who is at present in Boston, has written a letter to Mr. H. G. Kellogg in answer to a letter of that gentleman in regard to the vacancy in the Episcopal church of this place caused by the resignation of Mr. G. M. Hubbard. The Bishop says that he has appointed to the vacancy an English clergyman, formerly of Toronto, but now of Boston, and that he will arrive in Anaheim the latter part of this month, so that there will be no intermission in the services of the Episcopal church. The clergyman, whose name the bishop forgot to mention, visited in Los Angeles a couple of years ago and conceived a great liking for Southern California. (The clergyman whose name the Bishop forgot to mention, was the Rev. A. G. L. Trew, who is well remembered by the Pioneers. He came to Anaheim with his family and was in charge of St. Michael's Episcopal church for a number of years.)

lights for the streets and take such
steps as may be necessary for adquate fire protection. Other matters of interest to the development
and prosperity of the twon will be
taken up. Twenty-two prominent
business men joined and when
the organization is completed, it
is expected there will be 50 members.

Mrs. Max Nebelung is entertaining
the Ladies Euchre club this afternoon at the Elks club. Lunchcon was served at 1 o'clock after which the usual game of progressive euchre was enjoyed by the ladies.
Miss Jane Case, daughter of
Mr and Mrs. A. Curtis Case, 129 North Clementine street, accompainted by her grandmother, Mrs.
A. L. Bennett, left Sunday on a trip to New York City, via the Panama Canal route. En route they will stop at Salvador, Nicaragua and Havana. They will spend a month in New York before returning home.
Mr and Mrs. L. N. Evans formerly of Anaheim were honored at a reception given by Mrs. McBurney at her home in Los Angeles recently. The occasion was the fifteenth anniversary of their wedding in Anaheim, Oct 4, 1877.
More than seventy guests, all of whom had lived in Los Angeles from forty to fifty years were present to congratulate them. Mrs. Evans, formerly Miss Mary Austellier, was an athlete at Anahi in his day.
Hugh Warden The day
and a million dollar personality and pretty Priscilla Orman. But as you write about the brilliant future that lies ahead of these lovely ladies, you can't help but pause in silent tribute to Arlene Anderson who died as the result of a traffic mishap on her way home from Santa Ana college in June, 1951. Drive carefully.
PASSING—Joe Anton. The personable Northgate merchant who always has a ready smile. Was quite an athlete at Anahi in his day. Hugh Warden. The Orange county roofer and Fullerton Mayor recalls those nostalgic days of his youth when he grew up in Anaheim "Y know," he said, "we kids had a lot of fun, kids today don't have even if they have so much more than we did. Guess it's because we appreciated what little we got more." Georgene Conteras. Was one of the pioneer gal softballers. Really outstanding with the bat. Joe Cano. The enterprising Anaheimer who through his diligence and hard work makes his business enterprises pay dividends. He's a fellow to be admired.
QUIZZICALLY—You mentioned the Newport-Santa Ana railroad recently. Is it true that its business was entirely humber hauling? No. The McFaddens built a branch line to Smeltzer. By doing so they gained 2000 cars annually as the celery crop was usually shipped east. Is it true that railroad revenues in Orange county have dropped? Yes. In 1949-50 a banner orange crop was shipped. Fullerton originated the bulk of this freight business—estimated as close to $5,000,000. The Anaheim Gazette is the oldest newspaper in the county. When was another newspaper established? The Santa Ana Blade was started in 1880 by Henry Peabody. How many wineries were there in and around Anaheim at the height of the vineyards? About 50 in 1885 when there were some 500,000 vines producing 1,500,000 gallons of choice wines.
AFTERTHOT — Funeral expenses, like everything else, have increased so much that a fellow just can't afford to die.
Mr and Mrs L. N. Evans formerly of Anaheim were honored at a reception given by Mrs. McBurney at her home in Los Angeles recently. The occasion was the fifteenth anniversary of their wedding in Anaheim, Oct. 4, 1877. More than seventy guests, all of whom had lived in Los Angeles from forty to fifty years were present to congratulate them. Mrs Evans, formerly Miss Mary Austin, came to Anaheim in 1873, she taught school in Anaheim and Fairview. She was also a member of the choir of the Presbyterian church and an officer of the Missionary society when it was first organized. Mr. Evans arrived also in 1873 from Michigan. He engaged in ranching, later going into the grocery business. Among the long time residents of Los Angeles present were Mr. and Mrs. D. K. Edwards, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Wilson, Mrs. A. B. Stafford, Mrs. Caddie Ross, Mrs. Chas. A. Miller, Mrs. E. D. Sturdevant and Mr. J. Erwin Royce.
