January White Sales
Take On Rainbow Hues
By VIVIAN BROWN
(AP Newsfeatures Writer)
Homemakers might be surprised to find that the "white sales" which help replenish the linen closet are rampant with color. So says Ruth Leigh, director of the Cannon Homemaking institute.
Miss Leigh offers special advice to women who have never shopped for colored linens, and her advice is that good quality, textiles are the best economy in the long run. Here are her suggestions.
1. Plan your overall color coordination before you shop. Experiment with color combinations to make sure your new linens will blend with colors already in your bedroom and bathroom. A good idea is to select colors that coordinate from one room to the next, so that if linens must be switched around, they will be compatible. A basic towel color in the bathroom might serve as an accent color in the bedroom, in lampshades, scatter pillows, etc.
2. When shopping for colored linens it is a good idea to select simple towels in solid colors to avoid a clattered look. But if bathroom walls are white, the room can be brightened by an assortment of colored towels. One good trick is to designate a color for each member of the family, an ideal way for them to remember their own towel.
When the cake was cut every day watched to see who had the pie with the buried bean. That person was promptly named the Lof Mischance or Misrule. He was supposed to lead his subjects merry chase for the rest of evening. If you wonder what happened if a lady found the bean her piece of cake, you may some she was queen for the night but chose a partner who served as king.

ROLL-UP PLACE MAT
If a sewing machine came your way at Christmas, you might lie to try it out on a simple sewing project. The roll-up place mat...
complete ensembles of bath towels, hand towels, and wash cloths.
If you buy only towels the store may be out of your pattern and color when you return at a later date for the wash cloths.
Look for a firm, tight weave that will give hard wear. The best place to see this on a towel is at the edge where no terry loops cover the underweave.
Feel the weight and body of towels and consider the purpose for which you need them. Hold the towel to the light to inspect the evenness of the weave—a good, firm weave will show tiny, regular pinpoints of light, with no weak open spots.
Check selvedge on towels and sheets to see that it is strong and unbroken, and make sure the hems are well turned and sewn with small even stitches.
Examine the new fitted sheets. These have firmly mitred corners that slip easily onto your mattress, fit smoothly and need no ironing. Fitted sheets are sold in both top and bottom styles in a lovely range of pastel colors. If mattress deviates from standard size either in width or thickness, you’d be better off with regular flat sheets.
3 Colored linens deserve good care. But they do not require extra-special care; any more than white linens. Like all deep-toned fabrics rich colors in towels such as dark green or bright red contain a certain amount of excess dye that runs off during laundering. This run-off won’t alter the color in the least, but it may discolor the laundry water.
All your linens will last longer if you give them considerate care. Rotate linens as you use them putting fresh laundered them...

All your linens will last longer if you give them considerate care. Rotate linens as you use them, putting fresh laundered items at the bottom of the pile in the linen closet. This method distributes wear evenly and gives linens a good rest between laundering and rouse. Be sure that linen closets, beds, and towel bars are free from ragged and sharp edges that could snag towels and sheets. Mend worn spots before they have a chance to grow.

January means snowy, cold and
wet weather to most of the
day but to Anaheimers Janusias a month of soft winds,
skies, growing grass and blossing flowers.
Jan. 6, just 12 days after

The pocket may be machinestitched in place or appliqued in

is ideally placed in the lower left

be about five inches deep.

HANDY HINTS
One of the basic lessons to teach
a child is the pride of useful possessions. The new tricycle, bicycle, scooter or toy truck will mean more to him and certainly last longer if you show him how to take care of it. Go over a mechanical plaything with him to show him how it is made, and the whys and wherefores of safety devices. Let him help tighten the nuts and bolts and lubricate when necessary. Talk over the evils of leaving it in the driveway or out in the rain.
Is your address book up to date?
This handy little record book is only as handy as you make it. Folks moved around a lot these days and play havoc with your address book. How about setting the record straight and then writing letters to far off friends with whom you have been meaning to chat by mail?
House plants can be as tempermental as we humans. If you have a plant that doesn't seem to be doing so well, shift it to another location. Do this till you find just the spot it likes.
Melt one fourth cup margarine,
stir in flour until smooth. Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly. Cook until thick. Steam or cook cabbage in boiling water for 5 minutes. Add cheese and green pepper to white sauce. Add diced ham. Place a layer of partially cooked cabbage in greased baking dash, then a layer of ham and cheese sauce mixture. Repeat. Melt remaining margarine and mix with crumbs. Sprinkle crumbs over the mixture in baking dish and call it scalloped ham and cabbage. Bake at 350 degrees for about a half hour. Serves six generously.

UP PLACE MAT
sewing machine came your Christmas, you might like it out on a simple sewing mat. The roll-up place mat is for a beginner to make, and of them is a worthwhile item for the advanced seam. The idea of the mat is to be spoon, knife and fork in its divided pocket inside, around the silverware, tie in impact roll and you are set outdoor or indoor picnics, for suppers, for school parties or buffet supplies.
The rolls may be made of fig-material in pleasing colors; material may be used for cuts and figured material for stitched-on pocket. Of course, testing colors in the plain macan be used each mat cut a rectangle of metal which will measure 13 inches. This allows one or hems or for fringe. Nat- the inch allowance is divid- half for each end or side. Mat may be bound with another color. In that out the rectangle into what the finished size, 12 inch- 17 inches. Attach a tape about 15 inches in length.

Alcohol is the best substance for removing soiled spots from the composition tops of metal furni- ture. Dampen a rag with alcohol and rub the spots. Go over the table top with a dry cloth. A wax polish applied once a month will give the table a nice glossy finish. To get a high gloss on chrome, the cheapest solution is a mixture of alcohol and whiting.
