Anaheim Gazette FRIDAY MORNING, Jan. 2, 1953 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Richmond Bridge Gives Governor 'Worst' Headache SACRAMENTO (CNS)—Probably one of the most acrimonious battles in California, and the one which has caused Gov. Earl Warren more political grief than almost any other in the row over the construction of the Richmond-San Rafael bay crossing. So far, the California toll bridge authority, which will handle the construction of the bridge, is several jumps ahead. Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER The thing that numbs the heart is this: That men cannot devise Some scheme of life to banish fear That lurks in most men's eyes. —James M. Hall. THE GOOD WORD—The joyfulness of a man prolongeth his days.—Ecc. 30:22. RESOLUTIONS—Betcha there are some Anaheimers who wished they hadn't welcomed the New Year so enthusiastically last night. Are you one of them? Why is it that a fellow who feels so high the night before the morning after feels so low? There are a couple of opponents of the structures, who are not adverse to a bay crossing between Marin and Contra Costa counties, but who want an earth filled barrier to create a fresh water lake and combine transportation with water conservation. The authority has progressed to the point where it has sold $62 million in bonds to finance the sub-structure and super-structures of the bridge, and will proceed in the regular manner by awarding contracts for such construction unless it is halted by court action. Such court action was sought by the North Bay Barrier association, but they were overruled in Sonoma county superior court! Their attorney, however, Robert Fraser, of Berkeley, said an appeal would be filed to further the case. Fraser is the same attorney who forestalled the sale of $50 million in bonds to finance approaches to the San Franciscо-Oakland bay bridge on each side of San Francisco bay. Fraser still contends the toll bridge authority is acting in a quasi-legislative capacity on the Richmond-San Rafael job, the primary contention on which he won his case involving the San Francisco-Oakland bridge approaches. In addition to these complications, Assemblyman Richard E. Dolwig of San Mateo county, head of a committee studying the entire bay area problem, has further complicated the issue by bringing up the so-called Tomasini charter, granted by Alameda county, to construct a barrier across the bay. Gov. Warren contends the charter is out-dated, it's over 20 years old, and said that the Tomasini plan doesn't have a chance because the proponents of this plan would have to get a francise to carry out its provisions. At the toll bridge authority meeting where the bonds were authorized, the verbal exchange between the governor and Dolwig waxed hot. Dolwig said that he LUNCHEON MEETING LEADERS — President Eisenhower and Senator with other GOP Senate bers of the Eisenhower s meeting at Eisenhower's headquarters. Left to right Saltonstall of Massachusetts chairman of the Armed Services Board. IN THE DAY LONG AGO By MRS. P. 25 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ey co-brated their fiftieth wedding ninety-second Sunday. They were married in San Francisco in 1877, came immediately to Anaheh where Mr. Ey had been in business for some years, coming Anaheh in 1873. Mr. Ey was first coroner and public administrator of the newly formed county of Orange. The family moved to Santa Ana about 25 years ago. He served on the city council. THE GOOD WORD—The joyfulness of a man prolongeth his days.—Ecct. 30:22 RESOLUTIONS—Betcha there are some Anaheimers who wished they hadn't welcomed the New Year so enthusiastically last night. Art yuo one of them? Why is it that a fellow who feels so high the night before the morning after feels so low? There are a couple of fellows—men you'd recognize instantly if we used their names—who always make a New Year's resolution not to celebrate the following New Year, but you know they break their resolution just 365 days after they make it. Oh well! New Year comes but once a year. That's too often. LINES-O-STUFF — Once upon a time Erie Lenz used to take in those Pasadena crowd crushers. He had to. He was a member of the highway patrol. That reminds us that Oscar Heying once upon a time used to like to make conventions as a delegate. He was a good one. Charlie Moore claims Herb Buriner is the only TV comedian worth viewing. Seems like a lot of other folks think so, too. Harmon Summers was behind a chain store counter for 14 years. Now he's got a better job right in his own back yard. Who says things never work out for the best? Ruth Heinmiller is one Anaheim woman who can do a man's work. She runs a typesetting machine. BRIEFLY—Adolf Schope says: "The future business outlook for the coming year is very promising." If the new government gives industry half a break tax-wage the wheels will really start humming. Anaheim's Senator Tommy Echel is getting ready to set up shop in Washington. Roby Masterson has become an outstanding leather worker in less than a year of sparetime. She turns out fancy hand-tooled leather-work. Chuck Westwood is from Wisconsin and naturally he wasn't rooting for SC to win the rose bowl game. Ralph McRadden played for Stanford in 1942 when Johnny Wagner drove a rose-covered horse and buggy in the big event. QUIZZICALLY—How long has Anaheim been getting Metropolitian water? Since 1941. Aqueduct water was given to member cities free for the first two months. A charge of $15 per acre foot was made for water used after Aug. 1, 1941. Is the Ghost Town railroad the first home owned railroad in Orange county? Uh-uh! The Newport railroad built by James and Robert McFadden between Newport and Santa Ana was the first. The first train arrived here. Retail Executive Predicts Upward Business Trends during New Year The American retailer will have to be an individualist with a realistic and logical approach to his business if he expects to rack up record sales in 1953, Max Hess Jr., nationally known retailer predicted today. Hess, president of Hess Brothers in Allentown, Pa., and author of the book, "Every American department store, declared that all indications point to a banner sales year in 1953." But the retailer will have to go out and bring in the business," he said. Pointing out that proper merchandising will play a vital role in the retailer's success, Hess asserted that the retailer who promotes his merchandise 12 months of the year instead of sporadically or seasonably, has the best chance of setting new sales records. He warned retailers to be individualists in 1953 and to make all of their business decisions on the basis of their own deeds. "In the past, too many retailers have made the serious mistake of trying to follow in the footsteps of the more successful ones." Pointing out that night shopping has already produced a serious labor problem, Hess asserted that the problem will further complicate the issue by bringing up the so-called Tomasini charter, granted by Alameda county, to construct a barrier across the bay. Gov Warren contends the charter is out-dated, its over 20 years old, and said that the Tomasini plan doesn't have a chance because the proponents of this plan would have to get a francise to carry out its provisions. At the toll bridge authority meeting where the bonds were authorized, the verbal exchange between the governor and Dolwig waxed hot. Dolwig said that he hoped he would be "frank and honest" about his presentation. "The toll bridge authority has been honest and frank," the governor snapped back. "Let's not question our honesty unless you want to be specific." "Well," said Dolwig, "that might have been an unfortunate choice of words." "I think it was," the governor replied. When Fraser rose to speak, he was first asked to sit down by the governor. On his second try, he allowed to talk, and started bringing up the San Francisco-Oakland bridge case, decided in his favor by the state supreme court. "We're not talking about that case," the governor said, shutting off the implied threat from Fraser that a higher court might again hold in his favor. "Let's keep the discussion to the case in point." It was the general consensus after the authority's action, that much more will be heard about the Richmond-San Rafael bridge, for the opponents indicated they are a long way from giving up their hope of a salt water barrier. None Injured as Airliner Crashes BIIRMINGHAM, Eng., Jan. 4—Not one of the 22 passengers was injured when a two engine airliner crashed into the top of a sturdy oak tree here today and left is tall section perched in the branches. The passengers and the three members of the crew were in front section which broke off and belly-landed in a plowed field. The pilot and co-pilot, the only casualties, were hospitalized for cuts and shock. The first train over the line was run on Jan. 12, 1892. They operated the railroad and wharf until 1899. Owing to the religious convictions of the owners, no trains ran on Sunday while they controlled the road. When did Glenn Martin establish his over-water flight record? In 1922 Martin flew his home-made hydroplane from Newport to Catalina in 37 minutes. His return flight from Avalon via San Pedro took 51 minutes. Steward Condon likes to peddle his bicycle in the rain. There's nothing else for a kid with a paper route to do. Al Marcoux, Kwikset's able safety engineer, says: Money can never compensate for the loss of a limb, nor can it replace a life". Ray Gonnell learned the hard way that inactivity makes a man restless. He had an appendectomy and then had to wait for the doctor to release him. PARTING THOUGHT — Some folks don't wait for opportunity to knock—they wait for it to knock the door down. Pointing out that proper merchandising will play a vital role in the retailer's success, Hess asserted that the retailer who promotes his merchandise 12 months of the year instead of sporadically or seasonally, has the best chance of setting new sales records. He warned retailers to be individuals in 1953 and to make all their business decisions on the basis of their own deeds. In the past, too many retailers have made the serious mistake of trying to follow in the footsteps of other retailers and the results have been far from satisfactory. The most successful retailers in our history governed themselves by their own store, their own street corner and their own clientele rather than what someone else was doing in another city," he said. Barring an all-out war or an epidemic of nation wide strikes there will be little or no civilian shortages, he said. "The inflationary spiral is starting to lose some of its momentum and consequently, price will be more important than ever in 1953 buying," he observed. The Allentown executive said that the retailer who is ready to meet competition on all levels can look for a five to 10 per cent increase in his sales. However, he explained, that the consumer will have the purchasing power to push sales up but unlike previous years he is going to be an unusually cautious shopper looking for the best buys. In order to bring in the extra volume, Hess declared that the retailer will probably spend a larger percentage of his dollar for promotion and advertising than he has done in recent years. He said that the retailer who attempts to cut his advertising budget to keep his expenses down will be making a drastic mistake next year. Hess predicted that the forthcoming year will see many retailers ending such uneconomical practices as staying open more than staying open an extra night or two is not bringing any extra business but actually is diverting regular daytime traffic. There is no question that if the retailer took the extra money that he spending to keep his store open these extra nights and used it for advertising, promotion and merchandising, he would get a better return for his investment," he said. Pointing out that night shopping has already produced a serious labor problem, Hess asserted that the problem will probably get more acute if retailers insist on staying open extra nights." With large industries offering much more lucrative salaries, the retailing field is already having a difficult time holding on to its personnel. And extra night work is making the retailing industry less desirable as a career." Hess said that the biggest gains in 1953 are expected to be in women's ready-to-wear, New feminine fashions, coupled with new colors, fabrics and textures designed to make milady more flattering are expected to send sales figures at least 10 per cent beyond the 1952 mark. The department store-head declared that sports wear, including sweaters, skirts and separates, will be very popular in 1953. He added that Italian fashions, which established a firm beachhead in the American market last year, is expected to skyrocket to new popularity heights the forthcoming year. He predicted that Italian sportswear will lead the fashion field with California, southern and Mexican sportswear running a close second. Price wise, the consumer can expect to get the best value for her money in the women's ready-to-wear field since World War II," he said. He pointed out that along with the anticipated increase in ready-to-wear sales, the retailer can also expect a corresponding increase in other categories such as accessories and sales. HENRY KUCHEL Years Ago and Mrs. Frank Ey celebrated their fifteenth wedding anniversary Sunday. They were married on San Francisco in 1877, and immediately to Anaheim on Mr. Ey had been in busier for some years, coming to him in 1873. Mr. Ey was the coroner and public administrator of the newly formed county Orange. The family moved Santa Ana about 25 years ago, served on the city council of which is Spanish for Wednesday. The first meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Julius Schneider on Wednesday afternoon next. City Electrician Lewis and Jas Hatfield are stringing wires across the streets for the colored lights to be displayed in honor of the annual turnfest which is to be held on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, and will be participated in by Turners of Southern California. Californians Avoid Farm Work SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 1 UP—The year 1952 ended with more Californians working off the farm than at any time in the history of the State, the director of the State Department of Industrial Relations announced today. He estimated that December non-farm employment reached a record level of more than 3,830,000 wage and salary workers. This figure is five per cent higher than the December, 1951, figure, and almost 12 per cent higher than for December, 1950. Largest increases over the year took place in manufacturing, reflecting expansion of California defense industries. The report said that while seasonal factors will result in reductions in employment during the early months of 1953, the level is expected to continue to rise. Shot Mr. O Malley SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 1 UP—The story told by Mrs. Carolyn O'Malley, 34, who shot her husband New Year's Eve, was supported today by the father of the slain man, police said. Sobbing out the details of events leading up to the shooting, Mrs. O'Malley told police that her husband flew into a rage when he noticed she had allowed two of the animals to tear at each other's fur. "He said, 'I'm going to kill you for this,' and I know he meant it." Mrs. O'Malley said. "He had threatened to kill me twice before," said Mrs. O'Malley, "once, six months ago, and then two weeks ago." Mrs. O'Malley said he had beaten her, but she had always loved her husband and their 12-year marriage had been happy except when he was mad. "All his friends thought he was wonderful, but they didn't know of his wild and violent temper. That was the whole trouble. (CP)—A handsome young Korean war veteran and boxer hung his head bashfully today as he asked a reporter to help him find a girl he met and lost on a Greyhound bus trip. "Just a chance to tell her how much I love her—that's all I want," said 24-year-old Herbert Winfield, now a bolt assembler at Republic Steel corporation. "I can't go on without her." Winfield, a Negro, said he first saw the girl, also a Negro, last July 11 in a crowded Portland, Ore., bus depot. He was still in the army and was going to San Luis Obispo to visit a soldier friend. "I looked at her and she smiled at me, and right then I knew she was the only one for me." Winfield said. "I think she felt the same way." They took the bus south for San Francisco, and at a lunch stop exchanged shy "helios." "I was just back from Korea and couldn't find the words to say how I felt." Winfield said. "But her eyes told me what my heart already knew." "Then it was too late. She got off the bus at San Francisco and I lost her in the crowd." Winfield searched the depot and questioned employees there without success. He went back to Portland depot later in another vain effort to find her. His quest came to light after he wrote to the Oregon Journal in an effort to locate the girl. Counterfeit Money Proposed as 'Secret Weapon' NEW YORK, Jan. 1. (CP)—Novelist John Steinbeck says President Roosevelt once considered using counterfeit German money as a "secret weapon" against the Nazl in World war II. Steinbeck said in an article in Collier's magazine that he and Dr. M. H. Knibely, a scientist, had suggested that huge quantities of counterfeit German money be dropped by air into Germany, thereby trying to dislocate the civilian economy and undermine civilian morale. Steinbeck said Roosevelt commented—it was "illegal" but thought it could be done. "Why, for the cost of one destroyer we could send Italy spinning," the president was quoted as saying. "For the cost of a cruiser, we could have Hitler on a hot stove lid." However, according to Steinbeck, the plan was rejected by Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau and Lord Hall-fax, then British ambassador as "illegal and immoral." Other citrus people scoffed—said it couldn't be done. But M.O.D. kept on! - SOMETHING HAD TO BE DONE to lower packing and shipping costs. As a result of M.O.D.'s initial experiments, the half-box carton now has proved its worth and has contributed to the development of a new, economical plan of packing citrus fruits. We have no hesitation in saying this carton packing system is one of the most important changes ever made in citrus packing methods. - THE CARTON ITSELF saves 10 to 15 cents per packed box equivalent. With complete mechanization of the packing operation, there is a total potential saving up to 30 cents per standard box equivalent on oranges and 40 cents on lemons—an annual saving of millions of dollars to California-Arizona growers. - THIS TREMENDOUS IMPROVEMENT is just another example of what M.O.D. has done and is doing. Once again it illustrates the far-reaching advantages of strong competition to the industry. MUTUAL ORANGE DISTRIBUTORS REDLANDS, CALIFORNIA
