Taxes, Highways, Top Agenda of 1953 SACRAMENTO (CNS)—In the short space of a week, the California Legislature for 1953 will convene in Sacramento with a gargoyle of issues facing the 120 members of the senate and assembly who have been elected by the people of the state to shape the future course of government. Not a great deal of change in how the state's government is conducted is expected, despite the fact that the 1953 session is expected to be one of major importance in the handling of current issues on taxes, education, highways and water. These four subjects, legislative leaders say, are bound at the session of the two houses to face outweigh any other measures they may be tossed into the hopper. On taxes, there is the burning question of whether or not an increase will be voted to supply the mounting needs of government and the support of the school system of California. Some officials contend that the increase is necessary to meet the requirements of the new constitutional amendment for increased allocations to the schools, while others declare the amazing surplus funds being garnered in by the tax collectors. The surplus monies, however seem to disappear in a welter of legislative bills even before they are accumulated. In any event, it has been pointed out that the growing state of California, and its growth has not only minished during the expansion post-war period, must have additional funds to meet the needs of the people. This is particularly true highways, which are some three LIEUTENANT '53 JETS INTO JAPAN — "I'm here to defend Japan," says young "Lieutenant 1953" who stands on one wing of an Air Force 794 at an air defense base in Southern Japan. Walter Knott Tells Rotarians The History of Knott's Berry Farm Walter Knott yesterday told the Anaheim Rotary club the colorful story of the beginnings and growth of Knott's Berry Farm. Mr. Knott, who described himself as a "tair farmer," said the berry place was 32 years old yesterday. He recalled that 32 years ago he and his wife drove a model 1 Ford loaded with "kids and possessions" to a little farm near Buena Park and "rented the place." Around the corner was an old house completely devoid of modern facilities, it didn't even have water, which the family rented for $8 a month. He said he owned nothing at the time, but his kids got a good schooling at the public schools, "as good an education as well-to-do folks." Because of that he never balked at paying taxes; until, he added as an afterthought, "income taxes got so high." During the depression, he related, the market fell out from under berries. "Necessity drove us toward the restaurant business," he said. "Little things," he pointed out, "change the whole trend of people's lives." To make ends meet, the Knotts began to serve lunches in the berry season consisting of rolls, jams, pies and other light food. Mrs. Knott declared at that time, "we are not going into the restaurant business." But, said Mr. Knott, the depression got deeper, so Mrs. Knott decided to sell chicken dinners from their roadside teareoom. The first day she sold eight dinners at 65 cents each. The word, however, got around; New Year's Eve Service Slated At Zion Lutheran On New Year's eve, Dec. 31, at the chicken dinner business began to thrive — so the Knotts made it a year-round business. They then began the expansion which has resulted in the present huge enterprise. Leroy Ater, who introduced the speaker, described the farm as "the largest dinner place in the world" operated by a man who "buys the finest" of everything for his meals. By 1937 Knott's business had grown to the point where he could expand the farm and begin to get "money for things he always wanted to do." In 1940, he started the ghost town. His inspiration for the unusual venture was his grandmother who had lived with Mr. Knott's family for several years while he was a youth. Mr. Knott said his grandmother was a "typical example of the pioneer woman" who trekked from Virginia to California in her life-time. After living for years in Texas she came to California by covered wagon in 1860. In later years, she related to her grandchildren stories of the pioneer days. Walter Knott retained a vivid memory of the stories and formed an "impotent opinion" of the greatness of the pioneer folk; and, he said, he received a "good understanding" of covered wagon days. Sometimes before coming to Buena Park, the Walter Knots lived in the Mojave desert under conditions similar to pioneer times. In 1940, at his berry place, Mr. Knott undertook to create a "picture" of covered wagon days, because, he thought, the era should be preserved. After days of thinking about it, he decided the setting should be a "town typical of covered wagon days." So, ghost town was born. (AP)—For nature lovers who wanted to see the fall foliage in comfort, one bus company arranged two 00-mile tours of the state. The two tours, covering different parts of the state, each took almost five hours. The United Transit Co. claimed you couldn't drive your own car safely and still see the countryside. In addition to motorists, the tours were patronized by business men in town for the week end and residents who had never seen the beauties of the state. Sometime before coming to Buena Park, the Walter Knotts lived in the Mojave desert under conditions similar to pioneer times. In 1940, at his berry place, Mr. Knott undertook to create a 'picture' of covered wagon days, because, he thought, the era should be preserved. After days of thinking about it, he decided the setting should be a "town typical of covered wagon days." So, ghost town was born. "If I had known in 1940 how much time and money would go into a ghost town, I probably wouldn't have dared to start it," he stated. Many of the buildings have been collected from old, deserted towns. Some of the structures were in only a partial state of preservation. These, he said, were rebuilt exactly as they had been in the old days. Other buildings are almost complete originals. Others heard from during the course of the meeting included Walt Taylor, Dr. M Gaylord Brown, Mel Gauer, Tex Middleton, Bernard Jordan, John Dwyer, Richard Gay, Max Besier, and Carryl White. Arch Baker presided. Mrs. Agnes Davis Dies in Rest Home Agnes E. Davis, 84, a native of Morris Run, Pa., who came to California 48 years ago and who had resided in Anaheim for 34 years, died Sunday afternoon at the Cherry Rest Home after a brief illness. Her home at present was at 314½ E. Wilhelmina st. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews in the East and a very close friend, Miss Eva E. White, with whom she lived for 46 years. She was a member of the Methodist church. Funeral services will be conducted from the Hilgenfeld chapel today at 2 o'clock. Rev Wm. McKinley Walker, pastor of Wesley Methodist church, will officiate and burial will follow in Fairhaven cemetery near Orange.
