Anaheim Gazette TUESDAY MORNING, Dec. 30, 1952 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Gazette SPORTS Tennessee, Texas Evenly Matched for Cotton Bowl Anaheim Cagers To Meet Bellflower Anaheim high school cagers will go up against Bellflower's quintet today in the high school's gymnasium. The varsity game will follow a contest between the two schools' B teams which will begin at 2 p.m. Bellflower fell to Anaheim once this season when the Colonists won 53-45 at Bellflower. It was the second game for the Anaheim cagers who ran into trouble with Bellflower's diversified defense system before finally starting to score with long shots. Rain Halts Sugar Bowl Tennis Play NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 29, UPI—Rain halted the Sugar bowl tennis singles championship match today with Gardnar Mulloy leading Tom Brown, Jr., 4-6, 8-6, 8-6. Both title matches were reset for tomorrow. The score of the first three sets will be carried over to tomorrow. Playing in the doubles will be the team of Mulloy and Brown, San Francisco, against Halo Burrows, Charlottesville, Va., and Fred Kovalevski, Washington, D.C. DALLAS, Dec. 29, UPI—Indications are that Texas and Tennessee will enter the Cotton bowl game Thursday with the shortest odds of any of the major New Year's day football clashes. They certainly are the shortest in the 17-year history of the Dallas post-season game — a point and a half favoring Texas. Even that is too much, according to Coach Ed Price of Texas. Acting Head Coach Harvey Robinson of Tennessee thinks, it's not enough but he wouldn't broaden them by more than five and a half. The odds opened at a point and a half two weeks ago. There has been no change and won't be. Price says he doesn't know the reason his team is favored, even if it's by such a small margin. In 1950 Texas was a touchdown favorite to beat Tennessee. And the game also was advertised as a struggle between offense and defense. Tennessee wasn't supposed to have much scoring power except through using the opposition's mistakes. But lo and behold! Tennessee made 340 yards rushing and passing and scored three touchdowns while Texas, which was supposed to be a big ball of fire offensively, got only 243 yards and two touchdowns. That has made the prognosticators cautious about what's going NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 29, U.P.—Rain halted the Sugar bowl tennis singles championship match today with Gardnar Mulloy leading Tom Brown, Jr., 4-6, 8-6, 8-6. The Australians who needed only the doubles win to clinch the prized trophy after opening day singles victories over Seixas and Trabert, played superbly. The final two singles matched to be played tomorrow night, U.S. time, will be anti-climactic. On that day, Sedgman is slated to meet Trabert and McGregor to play Seixas, switching the opponents each faced Monday. Sedgman, playing at the peak of his great game, defeated Seixas of the U.S. playing captain from Philadelphia, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 in the opening set. McGregor dumped Trabert, a Cincinnatiian on leave from the U.S. navy, 11-9, 6-4, 6-1. Trabert put up a game battle until he tired in the later stages. The first set was a real thriller which was decided only when McGregor finally broke the sailor's service in the 20th game. By contrast the exhausted American youngster lost his delivery four straight times at the end of the second set. At the end he was just hanging on but still was trying for every point. USC’s Sears Wins Pop Warner Award PALO ALTO, Dec. 29, (P)—The University of Southern California's all-American backfield ace, Jim Sears, today won the Glenn Pop Warner award as the most valuable senior football player on the west coast. Sears, who won AP all-America honors for his stellar defensive played edged out linebacker Don Moowmaw, of UCLA, quarterback Don Heinrich of Washington and fullback Johnny Olszewski of California. Warner originated the single wing formation which USC employed this year in winning the Pacific coast conference championship. "It pleases me no end to see a boy who can play on both offense and defense selected for this award in my honor," Warner said. Sears was chosen by 400 Pacific coast sports writers, broadcasters and coaches. The Warner award has been presented annually since 1949. Hank Marino of Milwaukee, who was elected "Bowler" of the Last Half Century, has coiled 11 perfect 300 games in league play. Extrast the exhausted Amungster lost his delivery eight times at the end of the set. End he was just hanging still was trying for every motor like Sedgman before PASADENA, Dec. 29—Hundreds of Big Ten football rooters streamed into town today, the sun shone in its nicest fashion and the two Rose Bowl teams, Wisconsin and Southern California, launched into final drills for their New Year's Day date. By special train, plane and automobile, Badger supporters arrived, headed by Wisconsin Gov. Walter J. Kohler and Wisconsin's 155-piece band which has sworn to score another Big Ten triumph over the Coast Conference music makers in the bowl Thursday. The muscle men, meanwhile, resumed practices at their respective fields and approximately 100,000 eyewitnesses, plus millions of television watchers, got ready for the annual fray. Expert opinion was still divided with the local horn tooters for the most part predicting a Trojan victory for the coast and an end to the long domination by Big Ten teams stretching back six games. Much of the coast hope is based on what would appear to be superior reserve strength of Southern Cal in both offensive and defense platoons. A large part of the Badger attack concerns left halfback Harland Carl, who missed three games entirely this fall but whose running average of 7.4 yards per carry gave him the best mark on the team. Carl, however, is rated in the China doll class, easily broken, and even today is on the casualty list and a doubtful starter. He has a badly bruised right knee. Wisconsin sources say Carl's replacement, Bill Hutchinson, at least can stand up under aggressive play. In contrast, Coach Jess Hill of USC could lose any of his No. 1 backfield combination, including the key left halfback position, and there wouldn't be too much difference between the original and the replacement. Santa Clara to Quit Football SANTA CLARA, Dec. 29. GP—Closing out two financially unsuccessful years of play, the University of Santa Clara tonight announced it was quitting intercollegiate football. The announcement was made by the Jesuit school's president, the Rev. Herman J. Hauck, S. J., who said the decision was "regrettfully" reached after a survey showed the university couldn't carry out an expansion program and other projects with continued losses at the football box office. Although school officials said the final totals had not been reached, they indicated this year's football program cost the university about $80,000. Last year, Santa Clara lost about $72,000. Except for its Gator Bowl triumph over Clemson last New Year's Day, the University of Miami football team has lost all of its road games in two years. Jockey DeSpiriti Pushing Hard To Break Record MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 29. Apprentice jockey Tony DeVito, driving to break the world riding record of 388, brought four winners in seven races to Tropical Park today and pulled his total for the year to 385 two days to go. The whopping crowd of 197 gave the nervy littlerence, Mass., boy thunderous plause when he came while home to win the first, second fifth and seventh races. He not have mounts in the third fourth, finished out of the m in the sixth and eighth, and third in the ninth. "I think I'll break the re now," DeSpiriti said, "if I just get the mounts." His agent, Norman Suddha said he had six mounts for Tropical Park day "and I'm taking all horses I can get." Sudduth pointed out many owners have their jockeys or prefer other rides and it is difficult to get hot for DeSpiritio in every race. "I'm not riding as well know I can," DeSpiritio said he lay stretched on a cot in jockey room between races." tense up there and can't seem loosen up like I should. "Usually I don't go to whip much but now I find myself using it more. I'm not a vous—just kind of tight." BOTTOMS UP—Billy Vessels of Oklahoma, West back, is knocked off his feet and lands on his head in this second period play against the East at San Francisco. It was a two-yard gain to the East's nine. Looking things over (left) is the East win in dying mills. The Sears Wins Warner Award ALTO, Dec. 29. Lions Beat Browns 17-7 To Capture National Title CLEVELAND (AP)—Detroit's Lions won their first National Football League crown in 17 years in a game that gave the lie to fans who say pro football these days is all forward passing. In slamming the door on the Cleveland Browns seventh straight championship try yesterday, 17-7, Detroit netted only 59 of its 258-yard total gain on aerials. It was a curious struggle on frozen ground for the 50,934 fans who shivered in Lakefront Stadium and millions who watched television warm in their homes. First, the key run was a 67-yard touchdown sprint by halfback Doak Walker, who hadn't hit pay dirt all year. He missed half the Lions' games to rest a pulled leg muscle and didn't play when Cleveland lost, 17-6, in Detroit eight weeks ago. Second, the Browns controlled the ball nearly two-thirds of the time, but the Lions held a comfortable point lead for all but a few minutes. Walker's run, midway in the third period, put Detroit ahead 14-9. The Browns smashed back for their only touchdown four minutes later, with fullback Harry Jagade plunging 7 to cap a 67-yard drive. Just 12 more minutes and the Browns' hopes died on a 36-yard field goal by Lion fullback Pat Harder. Halfback Ken Carpenter fumbled a Detroit punt to set up this three-pointer. The Lions played it cautiously in the last half, while the Browns piled up a big edge in statistics, which don't pay off. Jagade, whose 104 yards rushing was tops for the day, took the second-half kickoff back 18 then broke away for 19 and 29-yard jaunts in a drive to the Lions' 25. Jim David spiked this threat by intercepting a pass that bounded off Carpenter's fingers on Detroit's 12. In the final period big Marion NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 29 (AP)—Mississippi respects perfect football records and great teams—but isn't afraid of them. The underdog Rebels, facing Georgia Tech's unbeaten and untied Engineers in the Sugar Bowl here New Year's Day, developed their own system for winning during the regular season. The system, backed by solid reserve strength, is based on a well-balanced running and passing offense and a tough defense. It brought Mississippi eight victories and two early-season ties in an unbeaten year that gave the Rebels seventh place in the national rankings. Rebel Coach Johnny Vaught said he isn't planning anything new to throw at Georgia Tech, which won second ranking nationally. But Vaught said Ole Miss has some tricks they didn't unveil in The Lions played it cautiously in the last half, while the Browns piled up a big edge in statistics, which don't pay off. In the final period big Marion Motley made the Browns biggest ground gain by breaking away for 42 yards on a pitchout from Otto Graham. He went out of bounds on the 5 but lost 5 trying end the next play. Thurman McGraw smeared quarterback Graham for an 11-yard loss, while Otto hunted a receiver, then Dick Flanagan batted down a toss to give the Lions the ball on their 21. Detroit Coach Buddy Parker said after the game: "Our defense won it for us." Alabama Favored By 13 to Win Orange Bowl Game MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 29. UP—If Syracuse upsets Alabama in the Orange bowl football game, it won't be because the Crimson Tide is overconfident, says Alabama Athletic Director Pete Cawthorn. It was pointed out to Cawthon that bowl games are old stuff to Alabama, which has played in 10 of them before, and the Tide players might be taking it lightly. Syracuse, on the other hand, will be playing its first major post-season game is determined to make a good showing. "Abbama hasn't played in a bowl game since the Sugar bowl in 1948," Cawthon replied. "None of the players on our squad ever appeared in a bowl. As a result, they have great enthusiasm. They want this one." Bobby Marlowe, chief Alabama ground gainer, chimed in with: "I think we will win, but I know we'll have our hands full." "It's an even game," added Coach Red Drew. The odds on the New Year's day classic shortened today by half a point. Alabama, previously favored by 13½, now is a 13-point choice. Drew said he was pleased with the workouts Friday and Saturday. Rebel Coach Johnny Vaught said he isn't planning anything new to throw at Georgia Tech, which won second ranking nationally. But Vaught said Ole Miss has some tricks they didn't unveil in the regular season and, "Maybe we'll have a little something to surprise them." Vaught didn't give a hint about what the tricks would be. But he has been known to show up at a crucial game with surprise weapons like spread formations, double wings and other unexpected formations and plays. Vaught, obviously impressed with Tech's team, praised it highly. "We're not as big as Tech physically," he said. "Defensively, Tech's record is enough to scare you. They allowed only 173.2 yards per game. Nobody completed a long pass over their defending backs." And don't be fooled about Georgia Tech's offense. I think their 28-7 victory over Duke is the finest example of what its offense can do. Duke was unbeaten before that game. Tech showed tremendous power on the ground. Tech gained 322 yards against Duke. Leon Hardeman is good, but I like this Billy Teas. He had a great day against Duke." I’m not riding as well as I now can,” DeSpirito said as lay stretched on a cot in the key room between races. “I’m up there and can’t seem to even up like I should.
