"King hasn't lost a fight in two years and has lost only three since 1948," said Gainford.

North-South Sqads Set For Big Game
MIAMI, Fla., Dec. 23 (AP)—Both North and South squads completed heavy work today for the Shrine's college all-star game Christmas night in the Orange Bowl and the coaches named their starting line-ups.
"We're ready to go," said South Coach Andy Gustafson, Miami, after a two-hour practice session today. "And here's a tip; The South will win."
"I'm not making any predictions," said North Coach Stu Holcomb, Purdue. "but we'll give them a real battle. We have one of the finest collections of players I ever saw."
The odds, which had favored the North by six points, shifted today to 6-5 and take your pick. A record crowd of 45,000 is expected to see the fifth game in the series, in which the South holds a 3-1 lead.
Holcomb said he would start his own Purdue quarterback, Dale Samuels, in the signal-calling role.
An interested spectator at today's workout was Dick Plasman, assistant coach of the Green Bay Packers. He said he was interested mostly in Samuels, Ernie Stockret, UCLA end; Bernard Flowers, Purdue end, and Donn Moomaw, UCLA All-America center.
Both Moomaw and Stockert drew starting assignments.

Underdog Stories Irk Lions’ Coach
DETROIT, Dec. 23 (UP)—Coach Buddy Parker of theDetroit Lions slapped at CoachPaul Brown today for “tryingto make the Cleveland Browns underdogs” in Sunday's championshipgame.
“Any time a team gets tothe championship game seven yearsin a row you can't consider theman underdog,” said Parker.
“Brown is harping about injuries. He's harping about having an old team and he's harpingabout being idle for twoweeks and getting rusty,” Parkersaid.
“We've got a few injuries too. And any coach in pro footballcould use a few of those “old”players he's talking about. They don't come much better ormore experienced.”
Yesterday Parker had soundedan optimistic note and saidhis Lions were good enough towin the National FootballLeague title in the nationallytelevised game at Cleveland'sMunicipal Stadium.
Did today's raps at Brownindicate Parker was more pressimistic about his Lions' chances?
“No, not that,” said Parker.
“We've got a good team and I still think we've got agood chance to win. But as for beingthe favorites, it doesn't go thatfar. As far as I'm concerned thegame is an even choice.
“And you won't see me tryingto establish the Lions as underdogs,” he said, taking a final digat Brown.

s Star Halfback Ineligible
Psaltis Out of Rose Bowl
Game Due to PCC Ruling
PASADENA, Dec. 23 (UP)—Southern California's Rose Bowl hopes received a severe jolt today when one of its star halfbacks, Jim Psaltis, was declared ineligible for the big game against Wisconsin New Year's Day.
Prof. Hugh C. Willett, faculty athletic representative at USC—and also president of the NCAA—announced that a poll of the Pacific Coast Conference schools had, in effect, ruled Psalatis ineligible.
The decision was based on the fact that the Oakland youth competed in two games as a freshman on the junior varsity of little Santa Rosa Junior College in 1949.
This fact, Willett's statement said, did not come to the attention of USC authorities until after the final 1952 game with Notre Dame. It was not verified until Dec. 15, and then the school petitioned the conference to act on Psaltis' eligibility.
The vote was adverse.
Willett said Santa Rosa JC did not list Psalitis' 1949 record because officials there thought the two games on the junior varsity would not be counted under California State Junior College Association rules.
Psalitis, 6-foot-1, 186 pounds, is 25. He was one of the most effective defensive halfbacks in the Trojan secondary. He intercepted nine passes and returned them 113 yards and scored two touchdowns.
He stepped in at safety when All-America Jim Sears was not at the position.
USC has lost another prime defensive halfback, Dick Nunis, because of injuries.
Psalitis' defection will mean that Harry Welch probably will see fulltime duty in the defensive set.
Pirates' Night Game Schedule To be Protested
PITTSBURGH, Dec. 23 (UP)—Ralph Kiner, player representative of the National League, said today a protest may be harried to Commissioner Ford Frick because of the Pittsburgh Pirates' spring exhibition schedule which calls for 26 night games.
Kiner, a Pirate outfielder and major league home run king, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a telephone conversation from his home at Palm Springs, Calif.: "Our agreement is that the clubs will not play night games unless it proves better financially for the owners."
The Pirates' exhibition schedule calls for 34 games—26 of them at night. Major league players have been protesting the number of exhibition night games for several years, Kiner told the Post-Gazette: "Of course there is nothing we can do at this time, but it will certainly be taken up with the other clubs during the spring, and presented to Commissioner Ford Frick at our annual meeting during the all-star game."

Psaltis' defection will mean that Harry Welch probably will see fulltime duty in the defensive setup.
Meanwhile, the injury bugaboo cropped up on both squads.
Deepest concern centered in the Wisconsin camp when left halfback Harland Carl sustained a twisted right knee in practice.
Generally regarded as the finest break-away back on the team, Carl was held out of practice entirely today when Coach Ivy Williamson reversed a previous plan to let the 176-pounder test the knee in the morning workout.
Williamson decided to let the player rest the knee instead, and said he won't suit up until Friday. The Badgers will not practice Christmas Day.
Carl was the second-leading ground gainer for the Badgers this season despite missing several games due to injuries. He rushed 414 yards, with an average gain of 7.4 per carry. Pull-back Alan Ameche gained 946 yards, averaging 4.6.
Carl's immediate substitute, Bill Hotchinson, is still favoring a knee injury, too received in practice before the team left Madison.
Asked if the Carl injury didn't pose a problem, in view of Hutchinson's condition, Williamson replied ruefully, "We're used to it."
Southern Cal, meanwhile, missed the services of its two starting guards, defensive man Bob Peviani and offensive man Bob Cox. Cox has a hip injury and Peviani a bad cold.
Coach Jess Hill expressed no deep concern. Apparently he feels both will be ready for the game.
Meanwhile, both squads worked diligently today. USC scrimmaged again while Wisconsin went through vigorous dummy drills.
Wayne U Wins Cage Tournament
DETROIT, Dec. 23 UP—Forward John Kline sparked undefeated Wayne University to the Motor City Basketball Classic title tonight by scoring 20 points in the 71-59 victory that ended unbeaten Duquesne's five-game win streak. Kline calls for 34 games—26 of them at night. Major league players have been protesting the number of exhibition night games for several years, Kiner told the Post-Gazette:

Fuentes TKO's Moran at Olympic
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 23 UP—Jesus Fuentes, 158, scored a five-round technical knockout over Nick Moran, 156, Mexico City, in a scheduled 10-round main event at Olympic auditorium tonight.
Fuentes was a 2-1 favorite as he entered the ring but he won like a 10-1 shot. Moran was just an empty shell of the good fighter he once was.
The first four rounds all went to Fuentes by decided margins. He forced the bout, landed the harder punches and several times had Moran in difficulties.
Half way through the fifth round, with Fuentes still maintaining the upper hand, Referee Frankie Van Stopped the contest and awarded the verdict to Fuentes on a TKO, although there had been no knockdowns. Moran was rubber-legged several times, obviously had no chance, and Fuentes was much the stronger of the two.
It was Fuentes' fifth prb fight and his second main event.
