Mexico allowed only 20 in its first five Skyline ference football games this Anaheim’s ‘City at Night’ Is AUHS Night Adult School By JOAN S. WHITE Santa’s workshop (Anahiem branch), the scene of intense activity for many weeks, closed down on Friday night to allow his helpers to rest on their laurels until January 5th. The workshop, better known as evening high school or the adult education program, has been going strong on the high school campus night and day with an enrollment of six hundred students under the direction of William Poulson, principal. “We have never had a more enthusiastic or ambitious group of students”, Mr. Polson told us as we toured the plant on Friday night to take a look at the final preparations being made for Christmas. Courses Offered Many students enroll in special classes to further academic education as is the case in the typewriting and bookkeeping classes taught by Ralph Wines, the class in citizenship which enables newcomers to pass citizenship exams, and the English class so well attended by displaced persons in the vicinity. But many more enroll for recreation and the pure joy of creating. That is how Santa’s workshop got its start. When fifteen adults express interest in a specific subject or handisraft, a class is formed. These currently include textile painting, lampshade making, cake decorating, needlecraft. Lorraine Wilson had just been given a surprise party by appreciative students. Mrs. Ralph Cox and Mrs. Martin Talset were weaving handsome octagonal place mats for the table. Mrs. Paul David was putting the finishing touches on the white stole she was knitting. Mrs. Paul Demaree was fashioning a lovely baby set from hatpin lace. Other members of the large class were finishing some exquisite gifts for Christmas as crocheted metallic jewelry, knitted toys, hand smocked aprons, Swedish weaving, woven rugs and hand knit sweaters. These lady Santas has even remembered a pet Mexican hairless dog with a neat little sweater! Arts and Crafts Well attended too, was the arts and crafts class directed by Ted Wade. One group of students were working on Christmas cards made with a silk screening process while another was boning up on the finer points of photography. Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Scott were experimenting with “pointalism” painting which is the application of warm and cool colors dotted on canvas adjacent to each other for truly beautiful outdoor scenes. Mr. Scott took up painting as a hobby when aptitude tests showed decided talent in that direction. That is how Santa's workshop got its start. When fifteen adults express interest in a specific subject or handisraft, a class is formed. These currently include textile painting, lampshade making, cake decorating, needlecraft, sewing, rug making, and woodshop. Off-campus classes include an English course for Mexican nationals at the nearby camp, and a unique parent education-child observation class for mothers and their children between the ages of two and four. This class is held once a week from 10 a.m. till 2 p.m. at the Investment for Youth Building at La Palma Park. Needlework Our first stop was the needlecraft class where teacher Mrs. Mr. and Mrs. T. Mr. Scott took up painting as a hobby when aptitude tests showed decided talent in that direction. Woodshop This, the final night before Christmas at the woodshop, found electric saws, planers, sanders and paint spray guns going full blast. Teacher Dick Ryan reported that at least one-third of the students are women and all have completed one or more projects this year. Gilbert Hund was assisting Santa with the completion of a big circular coffee table made of mahogany with glass top. A revolving television table is to be one of E. H. Bray's gifts to his wife and children.
