Kansas State Whipped by Michigan State, 80-63 EAST LANSING, Mich., Dec. 20 (UP)—Previously unbeaten Kansas State, which had been rated the second best team in the nation, was ingloriously dumped 80-63 by upstart Michigan State here tonight to provide a stunning upset for the finale of the Spartan basketball classic. Notre Dame won 68-60 from UCLA in the first game of the twin bill tonight, using a stall in the final minutes. Michigan State, which didn't even rate a mention in the Associated Press basketball standings, was beaten 60-55 by UCLA last night, while Kansas State coasted past Notre Dame, seventh ranked, 80-64. Kansas State had previously whipped Drake, Indiana and San Francisco to rate the second spot in the AP poll. The Irish showed some clever ball handling during the stall and also picked up four points through free throws. Notre Dame had a comfortable lead all through the first half, but UCLA tied things up and then went ahead in the third period. The lead kept changing hands with no more than a 3-point difference between the two right down to the last few minutes when the Irish picked up another point and started stalling. Notre Dame led 18-14 after the first quarter and 38-31 at the half. UCLA became fired up after the intermission and tied things up at 40-all midway in the third period. Notre Dame's flash forwards, Dick Rosenthal and Joe Bertrand, poured in 20 and 18 points, respectively, to lead the Irish scoring. Forward Ron Bane, with 19 points, was the top UCLA scorer. Center John Moore made 11 points for the Californians. Ex-USC Grid Stats Quits as Denver Football Coach DENVER, Dec. 20 (UP)—John Baker, once a stellar guard at University of Southern California resigned today as head football coach at Denver university. Baker's team won only three of its 10 games this season, losing all of its contests in the Skly conference. Chancellor Albert C. Jacobs, Baker, who has been on the university staff five years, would assigned to other university wrestlers at the professors rank he holds. Baker said in a statement: reached the conclusion that might be happier with duties owed than those of a football coach. He came here in 1947 as a coach and was moved to the position the following year. Baker's former coaching assignment were at Iowa State Teachers College and Fourth Air Force March Field. (AP)—Elated over their 5-0 shutout of Italy in the interzone final, the United States Davis cup players will go to Adelaide tomorrow and immediately begin practice for the challenge round, starting a week from Monday. The Americans completed their sweep against Italy today when Tony Trabert and Ham Richardson chalked up almost identical four-set victories in the closing singles matches. Richardson, the Baton Rouge, La., youngster who substituted for team captain, Vic Seixas, defeated the Italian veteran Rolando del Bello, 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, then Trabert finished with an impressive 6-3, 5-1, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Fausto Gardini. It was the lanky young Gardini who carried Seixas to five sets Thursday. As a result of Trabert's performance, Seixas was sublimely confident that the Americans will Frank Sedgman to win two single matches if Australia is to re-recruit the coup, and Sedgman had later be at his peak when he faced Tony. It was the lanky young Gardini who carried Seixas to five sets Thursday. As a result of Trabert's performance, Seixas was sublimely confident that the Americans will take the cup home from Australia and Australian experts conceded that he might be right. The Americans are scheduled to travel to Adelaide by plane tomorrow morning and to start getting acquainted with the grass courts there in the afternoon. Seixas explained that Talbert who is on leave from the U.S. navy, needs every minute of practice he can get. Tony's long absence from competition didn't show as he whipped Gardini in a much more convincing way than Seixas had done. The American captain and local observers agreed that Trabert is a more dangerous player now than he was a year ago when he was used only in doubles in the challenge round against Australia after playing singles in the interzone final against Sweden. Trabert has been made the favorite over Australia's No. 2 singles player, whether Ken McGregor or Mervyn Rose gets the call. That apparently puts it up to... DETROIT Lions Favorite National Conference Title Clash To be Televised Across Nation DETROIT, Dec. 20 (UP)—Deacon Dan Towler, a battering 231-pound back studying for the ministry, hopes to lead the Los Angeles Rams to their fourth straight divisional title in pro football tomorrow. But the Detroit Lions—who haven't touched a title of any kind in 17 years—stand as 3 point favorites locally to spoil the Rams' bid. Television fans across the nation will watch the two highest-scoring teams in pro football smash at each other. And 50,000 will jam into Briggs Stadium, which will be 10 degrees colder than your refrigerator. Rarely have two teams lopped so bad early in the season and gone on to collide in a post-season playoff to determine the National Conference champion. The Rams lost three of their first four games and the Lions dropped two of the first three. But they each finished with 9-3 marks. The screaming, partisan fans want the Lions to win, of course, and move on to Cleveland for the National Football League championship game. The NFL title contest will be played a week from tomorrow in Cleveland's Lakefront Stadium. The Cleveland Browns will represent the American Conference—something they've done all of the three years they've been in the NFL. The Rams' history in the last four years of playoffs is one of near frustration. This is the second time they're had to play an extra game to determine the divisional champion they beat the Chicago Bears in 1950. In the first two of three years they graduated to the NFL playoff. They lost. Last year the Rams finally won the league crown, edging the Cleveland Browns, 24-17. This year they're carrying an eight-game winning streak and that worries Coach Hampton Pool. He fears overconfidence. He's also worried about the loss of ace defensive halfback Dick Night Train Lane, who set a season pass interception record 14 last Sunday but suffered a wrenched knee. Lane ran a bit in Friday's workout here but Pool says it will be a miracle if he plays. Offensively Pool will lean on Towler, who led the league in rushing and who accounted for nearly half the Rams' sizeable ground yardage. Towler will play with 37 circuits.
