The story, written by Mrs. Eleanor Gilbreth, White Temple's Minister of Education, centers around an old woodcarver who makes toys to fill Santa's orders. With his help a young school teacher is able to recruit the talent of the community for a children's Christmas benefit for a crippled children’s hospital. Two children's choirs, of Primary and Junior age respectively, will provide music, and the familiar carols will be enjoyed by all. This is a family program, and nursery care will be provided for small children during the evening service as well as throughout the morning. Atomic Force Christian Science Lesson-Sermon Is blind atomic action the force that founded the earth and the universe? Or is there not a great intelligent force that evolves all things? Searching questions such as these are discussed in the Sunday Lesson-Sermon entitled "Is the Universe, Including Man, Evolved by Atomic Force?" in all Christian Science churches. "The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens," says the Golden Text from Proverbs (3:19). The governor said without equivocation that he is "going to strike as I always have to keep California's budget in balance and operate government as nearly as possible on a pay-as-you-go basis. He declared he has made something of a record along this line and is confident the state will be able to continue on this basis. There are as yet no total but at the outset, the governor called attention to the directive from the people of the state to increase the school allotments from $120 to $180 per pupil per year average daily attendance. After declaring the figure used was a total of $70,000,000 merit for the schools, the governor said "increases in school attendance will actually boost this total nearly ninety million." He pointed out this adds 15 percent to the fixed appropriation payable from the general fund and that of the total dollar in the fund, only 38 cents is subject to adjustment by his administration. That the total budget will be larger than last year is a fore-gone conclusion, the governor pointed out. Bible Words to Live By MATTHEW 5:13-14: "You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its salinity be restored? ... You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid." Christian character is the essential saving quality in our world. It is always dependable as a consistent and positive power in determining the moral quality of society. It demonstrates an unmistakable and a courageous faith in the moral and spiritual order of the world ruled by a God of justice, righteousness, love and mercy. Jesus made Christian character central and basic. His followers "are salt" and "are light." It would have been entirely different if he had said "You have salt" and "You have light." There is a vast difference in having an external something in our possession and in being something ourselves. The language of Jesus is clear. It requires us to be "salt" and to be "light." Christian character is constant and unchanging. It faithfully expresses and reveals its Christlike qualities in every situation and under all circumstances. It can never conform to the worldly ways established the heavens," says the Golden Text from Proverbs (3:19). Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Jesus walked on the waves, fed the multitude, healed the sick, and raised the dead in direct opposition to material laws. His acts were the demonstration of Science, overcoming the false claims of material sense or law" (p. 273). Governor Warren May be Trying to Prepare State for Big Budget RAMENTO (CNS) — The recent radio interview given Governor Earl Warren apparent attempt to soften the up on the size of the 1953 budget. Gifts Present Hel Services Thomas Sunday at Bethel church, Broadway and Sts. Anaheim, will feature services, presented by the junior choirs. Morning service, the junior will sing "The Birthday King." Joe Heidlinger and In this outline of the financial situation, observers concluded, it can reasonably be expected that an increase in the state's gasoline tax will be effected at the forthcoming legislature. Also, that if or 90 million dollar increase in the cost of any one type of activity without it becoming apparent in the total budget." Going into other fields, the governor said he would have to tell the legislature that additional facilities are needed to prevent overcrowding of the state's prisons; as well as more and better housing for juvenile offenders. The same situation, he stated, applies to mental hospitals. The state system has a capacity of 36,000 patients and actually is housing 49,416 patients, with a waiting list of more than 3000 seeking entrance to the hospital for treatment of mental aliments. Public school enrollment will increase from 1,963,000 to 2,113,000 during the coming year. An eight per cent increase is expected in state colleges and a slight increase at the University of California. Commenting on the highway problem, the governor pointed to the fact that it will take upwards of three billion dollars to put the highway system in shape. He said three points are apparent in the highway problem, first, that the need for building highways faster than we are now building them is apparent to all; second, that some three billion dollars are necessary to put the system in shape, and third, that additional financing is necessary. "Neither objective can be accomplished with present revenues," he stated. "California can get an adequate highway system only by increasing the amount of money available for construction purposes." Natural GAS is cheap in Southern California Residents of Southern California live better, spend less. This is because natural gas is cheap here. Its cost is under the national average for residential service. Gas is so economical that nearly everyone uses this clean, modern fuel for cooking, water heating and house heating. Thousands also use it for refrigeration and clothes drying. The price of gas for a typical customer is still about the same as in 1938. W costs as little today as it did 14 years. Certainly not food, clothing or home ings. In fact, your over-all cost of liv just about doubled. So no matter how you figure or c you'll always get the same answer: YOUR HOUSEHOLD BARGAIN I Live better, spend less with GAS Equalization Board Appointee Asks Strict Tax, Liquor Control Policy SACRAMENTO (CNS)—Equitable administration of property taxes, reduction in the number of liquor licenses issued, elimination of abuses in transferring of liquor licenses, flushing out the "hoodlums" and ridding the state of "saloon racketeers" constitute some of the policies Paul R. Leake, newly appointed member of the state board of equalization, will follow. Leake made this plain as he was sworn into office by Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan here. He said there was no need to be a seasoned analyst to recognize the necessity for a uniform assessment and tax procedure; an issue, the board has side-stepped for some years. The traffic in alcoholic beverages, he stated, presents simpler problems than tax assessments, which he said was the major item of importance in the board's responsibilities. “If the present control set is inadequate,” he stated, “it should be geared to cope with the situation.” Leake said no one could accuse him of being a "prohl" or a "blue-nose," but he pointed out that an unreasonable surplus of saloons could well prompt the electorate to decide it's time for a change which would result in slipping back to the bootlegging days of the "noble experiment."
