OBLONG VIEWS
(From an Egg-Shaped Head)
By WALDO HUNTER
In Korea there is war and death, misery and privation, cold, agony and loneliness ... stark realities which make the claims of the "police action" group dissolve into nothingness. War is hell, and it spawns everything that is evil in this world, and our young men still are being tried in its fiery crucible.
One such young man is Stanley Jones, former sports editor of the Gazette, who writes this department:
"Sorry I can't buy a mahogany chest for you or a coat for Jim, for you see I am now in Korea and there really isn't much in that line here now.
"I am north of the 38th, located near Inje which is located in the east coastal range of mountains.
"I left San Francisco Oct. 25 and spent 14 nights and 13 days on the MSTS Walker.
"We landed at Yokohama and took a three hour train ride to Camp Drake. Two nights and a day later we were in Pusan, Korea.
"We went by train through Taegu, Taejon and Seoul till we reached the reception center at Chunchon, a city supposed to represent the center of Korea.
"I then received orders to report to division Forward of the 40th Infantry. I'm at division headquarters.
"I am what is known as an army correspondent. I work out of the UIO (Public Information Office).
“There are eight of us. We have a Korean houseboy who does our laundry, tends the store and cleans the place up. We each pay him $3 a month.
“Several U.N. correspondents sleep and work here with us. We keep one man in each of the three regiments up on the line. They stay five or six days at a time, then come back here for one or two days. We all take turns.
Ed. note: Jones is attached to a corps of correspondents).
"The food is excellent here and even up front, although they have C rations for their noon meal.
“The weather is quite cool, no snow, but lots of wind."
We carry our weapons, helmets and ammo every time we step out.
"Really haven't seen too much of the country, but what I have seen has really been interesting.
"The old wise men of the villages wear white clothes with a tall black hat which has holes in it. That is to let their intelligent thought waves flow across the city.
"It is not uncommon for a man to be going to the bathroom outside, and at the same time talking to a lady passer-by.
The women, most of them, want our money, and most of them are ready for... They will try to get their hands in our pockets for money, then they make a grab for matches, rings, and pins. Most will do anything!"
There is an account of a young American uprooted and tossed into a conflict far from his native shores and alien to his thinking. From his letter, he is quick, observant, and perceptive. It is the hope of this writer that young Jones returns to his blessed homeland unmarried by the horrors of a very real war where, by the squeeze of a trigger finger soul is separated from body and in the twinkling of an eye exploding shrapnel can change a human being into a mess of stuff fit only for the burial party.
Hearing Date
Hearing has been set for Jan. 9 by the county planning commission on the proposal to create a dairy zone around Cypress, within which dairies could be established without requiring a variance permit.
The commission issued notice that the zone would be amended
"Several U.N. correspondents sleep and work here with us. We keep one man in each of the three regiments up on the line. They stay five or six days at a time, then come back here for one or two days. We all take turns.
Ed. note: Jones is attached to a corps of correspondents).
"The food is excellent here and even up front, although they have C rations for their noon meal.
"The weather is quite cool, no snow, but lots of wind.
"We are high in the mountains and are only warm from ten in the morning to three in the afternoon.
"One can hear the artillery very farming."
LINK TO THE PAST — Coast Guardsman Nicolas Orlandi holds one of the giant iguanas, last evidences of a prehistoric era, that roam on Mona Island off Puerto Rico's west coast."
