Gas Company in Anaheim can ex- Anaheim Gas Consumers to Pay Recently-Allowed Rate Increase Customers of Southern Counties Gas Company in Anaheim can expect an average increase in their monthly bills of about 11 cents as a result of the general "off-set" rate boost authorized by the Public Utilities Commission on Dec. 2. It was learned today from Justin M. Kennedy, gas company division manager. The new rate becomes effective on Jan. 1, 1953. Under the Commission's order, the company will be allowed to add 1.6 cents per thousand cubic feet to the rate schedules of all classes of customer, including domestic, commercial and industrial users; Kennedy said. The increase, which is designed to yield an additional $1,120,000 annually in gross revenues, will cover the higher price the company must pay for out-of-state gas after the first of the year. Due to competition for natural gas from mid-continent fields to supply other metropolitan centers over the nation, the El Paso Natural Gas Company, which wholesales gas to California gas companies has had to pay higher prices for additional gas needed to meet the ever growing demands of California users, Kennedy explained. This situation has made it necessary for the El Paso company to boost the price it charges California distributors, the new rate becoming effective Jan. 1, 1953. The California distributing companies, being unable to absorb the additional cost, are in turn forced to increase their rates. However, the new price charged by the El Paso company is subject to review by the Federal Power Commission. If the federal regulatory body should deny all or part of the increase, the El Paso company would be required to refund the difference to the California companies, which would pass the refund on to their customers. Kennedy stated that Southern Counties Gas Company has a request before the Public Utilities Commission for an additional $4,852,000 in annual gross revenues to cover the general increase in wages, taxes, and other costs. The present "offset" increase will not affect this other application, on which the commission will hold hearings in January.
