By WALDO HUNTER
Good Morning!
Well, the Gazette has hurdled most of the obstacles attending an abrupt transition from evening to morning publication with no casualties excepting isolated borderline cases of neurasthenia among members of the staff.
But once we have become accustomed to the strange new routine, even these skitterish staffers will fall into the rhythm of the thing and will become used to eating breakfast at high noon, "lunch" at 5:30 p.m. and "dinner" at 10:30 p.m.
If you would like to get an idea of how this new schedule has affected us down here at the Gazette, picture a housewife vacuuming the front room carpet at 2:30 a.m., or getting the kids off to school at 3:30 a.m.
Night work has its compensations... and its shortcomings. There is satisfaction in the knowledge that you are free from the jangling of the alarm clock at 6 a.m. But on the other hand one must summon up no small amount of fortitude to tear himself away from the fireside on these chill and sometimes rainy winter evenings to creep down to work.
The night worker has sleep problems, too. He wants to sleep most just at that time of morning when the household is at its noisiest. The acuteness of one's hearing, even though he is bundled under pillies of blankets and barricaded behind a closed bedroom door, seems to be multiplied a hundred-fold when he is in quest of sleep after working all night.
The normally soothing tick-tock of the old mantel clock in the living room penetrates even unto the boudoir and sounds like a 1928 Whippet in need of new connecting rods. The confusion of getting the kid ready for the school bus sounds something like a pla.
of thoroughly entrenched yeomen, and when the lady in the kitchen accidentally drops a tablespoon to the floor you would swear they were laying the keel for a mine-sweeper.
But, anyway, we find it fun to provide for you a morning newspaper of real value, and hope that you enjoy it to the full.
As for us miserable, carping ink-stained wretches who are wont to complain about working nights, there is one small shred of satisfaction.
We COULD be putting out a morning paper up in Greenland, where they tell me the nights are six months long.
