Books Still Big Factor in Librarian Discovers Television Can’t Shove Books out of Picture By JOAN S. WHITE “Reading is fun and good books still play all important part in a child’s development—in spite of televisions best efforts,” says Miss Elva Haskett, librarian in the junior department of the Anaheim Public Library. Her remarks were prompted by the enthusiasm with which several Local Reservists To Get ‘Copter, Atomic Briefing A two-man team of specialists from Sixth army headquarters at the Presidio of San Francisco will arrive in Santa Ana on Dec. 2 to brief members of local organized reserve corps units on the latest helicopter developments and on certain aspects of the atomic age, it was announced today by Maj. F. D. Taft. Capt. John I. Ferris, infantry, will lecture on the capabilities, limitations, employmnt and trend of developments of helicopters, which have proved of such importance to army operations in Korea for observation, evacuation, liaison and other purposes. Lt. Ralph E. Houck, infantry, will discuss atomic energy as applied to the military, industrial and medical fields. He will also lecture on the latest defensive measures against radiological warfare. The team is one of four touring the Sixth army area periodically, providing instruction on the newest equipment and techniques of the service. hundred book worms, junior grade, greeted the display of new books held last week in connection with National Book Week. About five hundred of the season’s best books for children were displayed in groupings according to interests and age levels. Since the new books are traditionally published in the autumn and have special appeal for the Christmas trade, this showing is held each year sometime between Armistice day and Thanksgiving. The books are carefully chosen to serve as a guide for parents who would like to select good books for their youngster’s leisure hours. Books for Half Pints This brand new collection now being put on the lending shelves at the library includes interest groups and age level reading range from beautiful colored picture books and simple stories of the west to handicraft sports, music and science fiction. Most popular among the picture books for half pints at last week’s showing were “Babar’s Visit to Bird Island” by French author Brunhoff, Lynd Ward’s “The Biggest Bear” with full page illustrations, and Zolatow’s “The Storm Book” describing storms in different places. Parents picked the tiny book, “First Prayers” charmingly illustrated by Tasha Tuda and Walter Chandoha’s marvelous photos of “All Kinds of Cats.” San Franciscans large and small were entranced by “Maybell.” a whimsical piece based on the recent fight to hold the cable car in the Bay City. Home Accidents Menace Children NEW YORK (F)—About two million American children will lose their lives or be injured next year as the result of home accidents, according to a statistical study by the American Mutual Liability Insurance Co. Falling out of windows is the commonest accident for youngsters under 5 with burns and poisons almost tied for second place. In the 5 to 14 age group, broken glass leads the hazards. The company's institute of safer living has compiled a list of suggestions for parents. Here are some: Screen windows and keep chairs away from them; keep matches, broken glass, household bleaches and other poisons out of the way; turn handles of hot utensils so that children cannot grasp them; secure rugs against slipping; and don't allow children to operate power equipment such as washing machines, wringers or dishwashers. BACKS CAMPBELL KAULBARS Mortuary Phone 3209 251 N. Lemon Parents picked the tiny book, "First Prayer" charmingly illustrated by Tasha Tuda and Walter Chandoha's marvelous photos of "All Kinds of Cats." San Franciscians large and small were entranced by "Maybell," a whimsical piece based on the recent fight to hold the cable car in the Bay City. Palry stories are finding as much favor now as when mother was a girl but their settings are modern day. Would be readers discovered no straight laced tales a la Elsie Dinsmore but found many a moral that could be applied to every day living. The Democracy table presented history most entertainingly in Genevieve Foster's "Birthday of Freedom." "Jimmy's Own Basketball" caught the eye of many a young boy in the in-between age group. There was a short form of "Black Beauty" treated lovingly by the famous horse artist, Paul Brown. Keeping pace with the times was Louis Slobodkin's "The Space Ship under the Apple Tree." Interesting Subjects What is a good book? According to Miss Haskett, the A-1 rating is based on treatment of subject material, good characterization, the balance achieved by the story to hold interest, and the fact that it offers the reader some definite gain. Sarah Barett's, "A Leaf of Gold," is a career story for teenagers that was included in the collection for the way in which it challenges the imagination. "Horsemanship for Beginners" by Jean Slaughter and "How to Draw People" by Arthur Zaldenberg are excellent because they explain "how to do" with easy to follow directions. Although the collection caters to the tastes of children from preschool through high school, there are a great many books for tiny tots who, with their parents, are using the library in steadily increasing numbers. For reading is fun and good books do play an important part in a child's development. There is some about a mustache on the life the man she loves that brings the maternal lioness in a gaze. Her creed is simple: "Love man—adore his mustache." As you refer ever so slightly the fuzz patch under his nose she leaps to its defense almost quickly as if you had trampled of her children. She countertacks with fury; with fists, words. Naturally, I was honest enough to admit myself that person jealousy had influenced my thinking: The only time I ever tried grow a mustache it drooped like limp hay. Well, most of my friends were quite tolerant about the whole thing, twirling their small fur forests as they sneered tauntingly: "Snobs we? Don't you wish you could a snob, too, Junior?" But the women got angry. They said a mustache is downright able. Before I could brood my woe out of inferiority complex the note gave me, another one came from an Akron, Ohio, lass: "Believe me, being kissed by a man with a mustache isn't at like being hit in the face with dry toothbrush. And you wife would probably like you better if you grew a mustache too on top of your head. Well, okay, so I was wrong. Mustache can be more than a mouse cover. Behind every manly mustache lurks a tender woman's bristly pride. A balding man needs every real mantic crutch he can lean upon. So its a pair of sweeping mustachios for me right away. The kind I grow myself make women weep with laughter instead of sigh with love. So I'm buying my self today the grandest set of rags old walrus mustaches on the market. I just hope my new falsies don't break too many girlish hearts.
