When You Buy in Anaheim Drew Pearson ON The Washington Merry-Go-Round WASHINGTON — Eisenhower's top advisers have hatched smart strategy for dealing with Democrats in the Senate. Through it, they expect to control a majority of Southern Democrats in the Senate for at least two years, possibly longer. Their strategy is to play ball with the Southern Democrats and not attempt to build up the Republican party in the deep south. Ike-advisers figure that if they butter-up men like George and Russell of Georgia, Eastland and Stennis of Mississippi, they will cooperate on Eisenhower's legislative program. However, they will employ a completely different strategy in the border states—Kentucky, Tennessee, Maryland, and Oklahoma—Eisenhower either rolled up sizable margins or won. In these states, therefore, Republican strategy will be to organize locally as diligently as possible with the hope of making them definitely Republican in the next election. But in Virginia, where Eisenhower will seek to keep the favor of Senator Byrd's friends, and in the deep south, GOP strategists figure that Democratic senators think and vote pretty much as Republicans anyway, so the best strategy is to court their favor. Mac and Dwight It's just leaked out that the only man who can talk turkey to General MacArthur and get away with it — General Kenny — made an eleventh-hour plea to the proud MacArthur to let bygones be bygones and endorse his former military aide, Dwight Eisenhower, for president. But MacArthur shook his head, sat sullen and silent in his Waldorf Tower until the last election returns were in leagues—Charles E. Wilson. It's the huge monopoly suit against the Duponts, also involving General Motors and U. S. Rubber... Organized labor now sings the praises of new Defense Secretary Wilson. His escalator, cost-of-living contract with the United Auto workers not only made history but increased the prestige of U.S. labor-management relations around the world... Senator Cabot Lodge, Ike's original campaign manager, wasn't unhappy about not being secretary of defense. He and Eisenhower both felt that he lacked executive experience, was better suited to be roving ambassador or a Harry Hopkins... John Foster Dulles will change few officials in the State Department. Despite McCarthy's charges, most State Department officials have long been Republican or career men. October is Worst Month for Auto Fatalities SACRAMENTO — With 372 deaths recorded and reports still coming in, October now stands as 1952's worst month for traffic fatalities, the California highway patrol said today. Last month's toll was more than the previous high set in September when 326 persons met death on the streets and highways. A breakdown of the October figures shows that 76 of the victims were pedestrians and that rural deaths outnumbered urban deaths be more than 2 to 1. Of the 372 persons killed 257 died in accidents occurring in unincorporated Rotarians Hear Rev. Selfridge On Thanksgiving The Rev. Philip R. Selfridge, minister of the Evangelical United Brethren Church of Anaheim, yesterday noon delivered the Thanksgiving address to the Anaheim Rotary club. He said "giving thanks is the highest achievement of man." Our "seventh sense" of appreciation, he said, has caused mankind to bring forth from the earth, skies, and the seas, many things no one even dreamed of 50 years ago. It has resulted in a better way of living and a better way of doing things. "The achievements of our great civilization" are in "direct ratio to our sense of appreciation." Before his talk, the Rev. Selfridge introduced Miss Delores Giardino and Fernando Ramas who sang "Thanks Be To God." Miss Giardino then sang "The Lord's Prayer." Miss Myrna Lewellyn was the piano accompanist. Arch Baker presided at the meeting. The club celebrated "Ladies' Night" last Wednesday when 100 Rotarians, Rotary Anns, and guests, enjoyed dinner and a musical program at the Balboa Bay club. CAMBRIDGE, England (AP) — Sir William Henry Clark, former British high commissioner to Canada and South Africa, died on Saturday, it was announced today. He was 77. NEW YORK (AP) — The Roxy Theater will close for the first time in 25 years next Sunday for a three-week period of alterations, including enlargement of its ice stage, at a cost of $200,000. LEGAL NOTICES Mac and Dwight It's just leaked out that the only man who can talk turkey to General MacArthur and get away with it — General Kenny — made an eleventh-hour plea to the proud MacArthur to let bygones be bygones and endorse his former military aide, Dwight Eisenhower, for president. But MacArthur shook his head, sat sullen and silent in his Waldorf Tower until the last election returns were in. Only a few insiders know about General Kenny's last-minute appeal, which he made three days before the election. He was put up to it by New York's Governor Tom Dewey, who had already tried to win MacArthur over to the Eisenhower bandwagon through such GOP stalwagon as ex-President Herbert Hoover and House Leader Joe Martin. Both had failed to heal the old rift between MacArthur and his one-time aide. However, the man who has always been able to tell off MacArthur and still make him like it, is the runt-sized, weather-beaten Kenny, MacArthur's air commander in the South Pacific. So Dewey dispatched the retired Air Force general to MacArthur's Waldorf Tower apartment to make a final appeal. "Boss," urged Kenny, "why won't you come out for Eisenhower?" MacArthur spoke grandiliquently of his obligation to his loyal followers who were still supporting him for president. "Those California radicals?" snorted Kenny. "If you string along with that gang, you couldn't be elected dog-catcher." The blunt-talking Air Force general argued, pleaded, and cajoled. "Look," he said, it's only a five-minute walk from here to Eisenhower's suite at the Commodore." "And it's only a five-minute walk from the Commodore here," replied MacArthur. That ended the conversation. Probably the breach between the two men never will be healed. Cabinet Notes New Attorney General Herbert Brownell, writing as guest columnist for the Washington Merry-Go-Round Aug. 23, said: "The inside story from Republican leaders is that the Republican party will win control of Congress in 1946. Put that down as one of this column's 'predictions of things coming in.' October now stands as 1952's worst month for traffic fatalities, the California highway patrol said today. Last month's toll was more than the previous high set in September when 326 persons met death on the streets and highways. A breakdown of the October figures shows that 76 of the victims were pedestrians and that rural deaths outnumbered urban deaths be more than 2 to 1. Of the 372 persons killed 257 died in accidents occurring in unincorporated areas and the remaining 115 lost their lives within city limits. October's toll pushed this year's traffic deaths to 2885, about 3 per cent more than last year at this time. In actual figures, 89 more persons have died this year and 26 of them—almost one third—met death in October. City figures on traffic injuries are incomplete, but a check of rural reports shows that more than 4000 injuries last month hiked 1952's record to 39,892, almost a 10 per cent increase over the first ten months of 1951. For the past 10 years, October, November and December have been the year's worst months, with traffic deaths in December dipping below 300 on only one occasion. Mrs. Mae Moody Dies at Home Mrs. Mae Moody, 77, died last night at her home, 619 S. Philadelphia. Born in Marshalltown, Iowa, she had been a resident of Anaheim for 39 years. She leaves her husband, William B.; one son, Max B. Moody; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Wright; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of Anaheim. The Rev. Howard S. Congdon will conduct the funeral services in the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary, Friday. Nov. 28, at 2 p.m. Entombment will be in Melrose Abbey mausoleum. Warren to Name Nixon Successor In Late December SACRAMENTO (AP)—Gov. Warren said today he will appoint Vice President-elect Richard M. New Attorney General Herbert Brownell, writing as guest columnist for the Washington Merry-Go-Round Aug. 23, said: "The inside story from Republican leaders is that the Republican party will win control of Congress in 1946. Put that down as one of this column's 'predictions of things to come.'" Brownell, then chairman of the Republican National committee, proceeded to make his prediction come true. Brownell began politics as Tom Dewey's successful campaign manager in the race for governor of New York in 1942, has been close to him ever since, watched Dewey's racket clean-up in New York, should do an equally good job in cleaning up federal corruption. Brownell is one of the closest men to Eisenhower, was given the job of handling patronage, will fly with Ike to Korea. At the Chicago convention, novice Eisenhower leaned on Brownell heavily, used to say: "What do we do next, Herb?" George Humphrey, new Secretary of the Treasury, is the nearest thing to an Andrew Mellon since Mellon himself ran the treasury. Humphrey is chairman of the Mellon-dominated Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., one of the biggest in the world; also heads the Mark Hanna Company, a Great Lakes ore concern; the Iron Ore Co. of Canada and the Industrial Rayon Corp., though a tough trader, Humphrey once helped give John L. Lewis a record 45-cent-an-hour wage increase, plus welfare fund for the United Mine Workers shortly before the 1948 campaign year. Some critics said he was trying to swing the miners over to the GOP. One of the first things new Attorney General Brownell will have to do is handle an antitrust suit involving one of his cabinet colleagues. SACRAMENTO (P)—Gov. Warren said today he will appoint Vice President-elect Richard M. Nixon's successor in the Senate some time between Dec. 10 and Christmas. Asked by a reporter whether he was any closer to a decision on the Senate post, Warren said the situation was still status quo. He has said only he would name a Southern California Republican and that some 30 candidates are seeking the job. The governor said the West question, said that when President-elect Dwight D. Eisenhower telephoned him Friday, they didn't discuss the secretaryship of labor. A reporter inquired whether Warren wasn't endorsed for the Cabinet post by the American Federation of Labor. Warren replied he hasn't heard his name mentioned for the secretaryship "in any way, shape or form." He said he hasn't discussed the question with anyone, that "Frankly, I haven't the slightest idea of who is being considered for it." Warren again declined to say what he and Eisenhower talked about. The governor said the West gained "very important representation" with Eisenhower's selection of Western men as secretaries of interior and agriculture. "I can't think of two cabinet positions in which we have more specific interest," he observed. Warren said he has no doubt but what the largest of the Western states will be represented in the government in a substantial way but he has no idea of where it might be or who the Californians might be. However, he added, "I tell you fellows that I have no knowledge on the subject—it's just pure speculation." PARCEL I.
