The tall, 64-year-old Dulles has long been a vigorous critic of Russian policies and has been subjected to bitter attacks in the Soviet press. Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Y. Vishinsky has labeled him a "war-monger." The Soviet newspaper Pravda has called him a "trader in death" and an "atomite." Dulles announced his support of Eisenhower last July 11 and campaigned hard for him. In his campaign speeches he rapped repeatedly at what he termed the Truman administration's policy of Communist containment. Instead, he said, "we can usefully erect strong local barriers" in Western Europe. And he added: "Also we probably have weapons by which we could hit the Russian Bear's heart if he broke out in aggression. But the Bear has grown too strong to be kept away merely by such bars as we or our friends can afford to build around the world." Born in Washington Feb. 25, 1888, Dulles was the son of a Presbyterian minister. His grandfather John Watson Foster served as secretary of state under President Benjamin Harrison. Dulles was only 29 when President Wilson assigned him his first diplomatic mission in 1917.
